Advertisement (Why?)
Thanks Dazog for his pointing out in Back Page News that NVIDIA have uploaded their latest offering -v56.64, to their public FTP. These are a tad newer than the 56.56 drivers shipped with Battlefield: Vietnam so they should fix the various lightmap issues GeForce users have already been experiencing with the older drivers on BFV.

Update: NVIDIA have already updated their website with the new driver revision :)

Noticable changes in this release is a new Desktop right click menu option that takes you straight to the NVIDIA display properties, bypassing the need to browse from Display Properties to Advanced and then to the NVIDIA tab, nice touch!

am i crazy or did i just see an entire other post just like this with way more comments and totally it disappeared?
anyway the reason i am looking for it is someone asked about 3d mark scores, and although i don't live by its scores at all, they were asking if these drivers boosted performance in anyway? from my running it the answer is "yes, just a very, very little."

These aren't WHQL'ed for my gforce2 card but they do install
#6.1 inVision on 15 Mar 2004 - 16:25
* While this driver is not WHQL certified on TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce2 GTS/Pro/Ti, and GeForce3 graphics boards, it will install and function correctly.

#6.2 IGx89 on 15 Mar 2004 - 18:54
It's not WHQL certified for my GF4 Ti 4400 either; weird .

(is it WHQL for MX420?)

o and any try the pop up blocker? Any good?
#9 fdlazarte on 15 Mar 2004 - 17:24
cool
#10 Ancormax on 15 Mar 2004 - 18:17
I noticed they seem to have snuck in a popup blocker for Internet Explorer. Considering XP SP2 will include this it seems too little too late. It also has absolutely nothing to do with the graphics card and drivers. Or did I miss that link?

BTW it's been Forceware for a while now. Detonator went out with version 4, so Yes you did miss something... that
#11 glazzz on 15 Mar 2004 - 18:49
hopefully this won't BSOD me like the other newer nvidia drivers do....
(3 replies) #12 jimbo11883 on 15 Mar 2004 - 18:55
I'm still using the 21.83's. Works best with my TNT2 M64... Yea I know I should upgrade, but what's the use when you're poor?
#12.1 xStainDx on 15 Mar 2004 - 22:23
You will get significant performance increase by using the latest drivers..

the 21.83's aren't even compiled the same as the new ones are. nVidia has made some drastic imporvements since 21.83. If you want all the nice new features and performance enhancments then you definately should update.
#12.2 bangbang023 on 16 Mar 2004 - 03:04
no, don't use the latest rivers with a card that old. Many people start getting corrupted icons in MSN when they do use them with a M64
#12.3 dougkinzinger on 16 Mar 2004 - 16:37
Uh huh. I stick with 45.23 on my TNT2-based users.

Old news. I downloaded these from eVga.com last week monday. Was supprised on how long this post took. They were on there main website not ftp.
#13.1 Spyder on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:06
how can it possibly be old news when these drivers were just placed on nvidia's ftp site TODAY?
#13.2 Wildcard on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:07
The 56.64 ones were on the eVGA site ? Are you sure bout that ?
#13.3 Mav Phoenix on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:36
I've had them installed for about a week now from eVGA.
#13.4 LastSamurai on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:55
are you blind or something? the one on EVGA's website is 56.56, this is 56.64
#13.5 Mav Phoenix on 15 Mar 2004 - 20:27
No, I just don't give a rat's ass to check version numbers. I've got more important things to do.
#13.6 LastSamurai on 15 Mar 2004 - 21:36

*cough cough BUG*
#15 Chicane-UK on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:19
Excuse me for being slow... but isn't Forceware the name of the drivers for NForce1/2/3 boards?

*edit*

Ah thats confusing.. all Nvidia software seems to be themed around the name 'Forceware' - grr.
(4 replies) #16 Kenny_Dee on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:27
what is the difference between these two:
56.64_winxp2k_english.exe 10997 KB
56.64_winxp2k_international_whql.exe 14907 KB
?
which shall i download?
#16.1 OPaul on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:39
The international version has all the language files, the English version just has the English language files. If you speak and read in English you want the smaller download, the "56.64_winxp2k_english.exe" one.
#16.2 Kenny_Dee on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:51
oh, so the languages relates to the install program only, right? i can dl it even if i'm from israel, right?
#16.3 LastSamurai on 15 Mar 2004 - 19:58
english version is not WHQL'ed.

does this apply to RIVA TNT 2 ?
(1 reply) #20 Bryan000 on 15 Mar 2004 - 21:17
Has anyone tested these drivers on a TNT2? Yeah, I know that it's an old card... but I'm stuck with it a bit longer

The reason I ask is because I have been getting very obvious and severe graphical glitches in programs when using the newer nVidia drivers with my TNT2 in Windows XP Pro SP1. I'm currently using 45.23 which give me no problems. I would like to use the newer drivers since they seem to perform just as good (if not better) but because of the glitches I keep switching back...

Anyone else with a TNT2 can you confirm these problems? Or is it just me? One of the biggest problem programs is Mozilla Firefox. Install the drivers and then try running it. It gets lots of redraw problems (in the interface, not the webpages it renders) and just a lot of general weirdness...
#20.1 Bryan000 on 16 Mar 2004 - 03:18
Thanks for your reply Johnr (below). I also had those MSN list glitches with previous drivers. Well, so far so good... installed these drivers and no problems in Firefox (crosses fingers!!!)

Looks like a safe bet to upgrade to these
#21 Johnr on 15 Mar 2004 - 21:27
Just installed for my TNT2, yea since about the October drivers I have never been able to update my drivers since they would corrupt the MSN 'Status' list but these seem to be working fine

#26 xStainDx on 15 Mar 2004 - 22:25
These Drivers are Unified They will work on a VANTA From 6 years ago to a Geforce FX 5950!

That is nVidias Unified Compiler Architecture. Stop Asking if they work or not. nVidia's Unifited System will probably not change.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SANTA CLARA, CA—MARCH 15, 2004—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced the availability of the NVIDIA® ForceWare™ Release 55 graphics driver for add-in graphics cards based on NVIDIA GeForce™ graphics processing units (GPUs). This new release includes many new features, tools and enhancements, including customized application and game profile settings, and support for PCI Express. The Microsoft WHQL-certified NVIDIA ForceWare Release 55 driver is immediately available for download at www.nvidia.com/drivers.

QUOTE
“Forceware Release 55 delivers awesome new features which are only available on NVIDIA GPUs,” said Dan Vivoli, executive vice president of marketing at NVIDIA. “Along with these new features, every customer using an NVIDIA-based graphics card manufactured in the last six years—all the way back to the NVIDIA TNT™—will get another free performance upgrade simply by installing this software.”

“NVIDIA’s latest driver set certainly brings with it a number of nice improvements that all NVIDIA owners will enjoy,” said Brandon Bell, editor in chief of hardware for Firingsquad.com (www.firingsquad.com). “When you add all this up with the performance improvements we saw in Unreal Tournament 2003, we definitely like NVIDIA’s latest graphics driver.”

“There is no doubt NVIDIA has the most feature rich drivers on the market when it comes to video cards,” said Brent Justice, 3D graphics editor of HardOCP (www.hardocp.com). “We are simply in love with the game profiles features. This is a gaming feature we have been wanting for a very long time.”

New features in the new ForceWare Release 55 graphics driver include:
  • Application/game profiles—image quality and performance settings can be defined and saved for each application. Profiles launch automatically when the program is initiated. Adjustments can be made easily to any existing profile.
  • Introduction of PCI Express—support for the latest PC bus enabled through NVIDIA UDA
  • The latest NVIDIA nView® 3.5 software—a new nView multi-display wizard speeds the set up for multi-display modes. nView 3.5 also provides numerous enhancements for more efficiently using a single display including an enhanced display grid technology for organizing windows on your desktop and a pop-up blocker to stop unwanted windows.
  • Easy output of video files to television—when selecting a video file for output, a simple right-click on the mouse pops up a menu to speed start up and simplify the selection of video output options.
  • Mouse-over pop-up help for all graphics control panels—an integrated help function provides pop-up explanations of all graphics-related settings.
  • Drop-down menu for NVIDIA settings—a new menu item on the right-click drop-down menu takes users directly to a control panel for NVIDIA graphics settings. </ul>Thanks to the NVIDIA unified driver architecture (UDA), NVIDIA ForceWare Release 55 delivers a free performance upgrade for NVIDIA GPUs, both past and present. With the new driver, GeForce™ FX 5900XT GPU performance in F1 Challenge ’99-’02 can increase as much as 120[i] percent. In Gunmetal, GeForce FX 5200 GPU performance increases up to 22[ii] percent and GeForce FX 5950 Ultra GPU performance in Neverwinter Nights goes up as much as 48[iii] percent faster.

By utilizing the Company’s unique UDA, NVIDIA ForceWare Release 55 supports all NVIDIA graphics solutions for PCI, AGP, and PCI Express bus architectures with a single driver version. The NVIDIA ForceWare Release 55 driver, complete with Microsoft WHQL certification, is immediately available for download at www.nvidia.com/drivers.

I agree. The newest drivers always work great, even on my old comp with a TNT2 Pro. The previous offical release gave a nice WC3 boost.
