Apple Computer said Monday that it has sold 50 million songs through its iTunes Music Store, with about 2.5 million songs being downloaded each week.

Apple said the sales figure excludes the number of songs downloaded through a promotion with Pepsi, in which 100 million songs are being given away. It has been reported that the specially marked Pepsi bottles that contain iTunes codes have been slow to reach store shelves in some areas. Customers have also found a way to determine which bottles are winners, by tilting the bottles at a particular angle.

Hopefully the outcome of this is more iPods sold, which is where they make their money. Not on the iTMS.

I have to say though, there's been a lot of iPod love everywhere around the UK recently, I've seen tonnes of ads everywhere including TV which I've never seen before, iPods are being mentioned all over BBC Radio 1 with stuff like super rare N.E.R.D. iPod holders (300 in the world apparently) being offered as prizes, iPods as prizes, presenters blabbering on about iPods.

Apple now need to get off their ass and release the iPod Mini in the UK

Not really, these totals don't count any songs purchases with pepsi vouchers. Pepsi still had to pay for these so they could bundle these figures in afterwards for PR purposes.
