On Wednesday, the Web search company will unveil Google Local, which has been tested in the company's research and development lab for the last 8 months. Type a keyword along with an address or city name into the search box at Google.com or at its newly designated site, Local.google.com, to find maps, locally relevant Web sites and listings from businesses in the area. "A lot of times when people are looking for something, they want to do it on a local level...This is a core search promise," said Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer Web products, who helped build the service with a team of engineers from Google's New York office.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google is giving prominence to local search at a time when it's one of the most hyped areas of development in the industry. Financial analysts and industry executives say geographically targeted search listings are prime real estate for local advertising, an estimated $12 billion annual business in the United States. In 2004, less than $50 million of that market will go toward ads related to local Net searches, but over time, the dollars will find their way to the virtual world, analysts say.

It will be "worth a lot more online. That is, merchants will pay more," said Safa Rashtchy, Piper Jaffray's Internet analyst. "Integration of that with search will make it very convenient for searchers and extremely useful for local merchants."

I wonder how this'll deal with the fact that America copied almost all of their place names from England? I guess it must mean that any site mentioning city/town X must also mention which country it is in, something that a lot will have not done I'd guess.

Well they were English settlers. You know the ones that founded America..

Or present the user with a disambiguation list where he/she can pick the intended city.

Settlers or not, it's still pretty funny that they move to this 'new found land of freedom', but can't even think of something to call the towns!

It'll probably be delt with in the usual way - by ignoring anything outside of US borders.

Have you even been to America? There's no way "most" of the place names are copied, at least in the Midwest.

I looked at a map. Are places not named the same as on maps if you actually go there?

(That was sarcasm btw Mr American )

It's also pretty funny that a stronger Britsh Land/Navy force couldn't overthrow the Americans on our own, mostly undeveloped soil. And we had the "We surrender" French with us!

Study Napoleonic Warfare, the French Army was a VERY strong force, you lot may not realise it but England and France had been arch enemies for a VERY long time, their tactics were simply awesome, their leaders very experienced, their supply infrastructures reliable. They were second to one force, the RedCoats, but were a very respected Army + Navy.

Like most of Europe, they don't want war any more. Our Countries have lived with it for a long long time.

I was just defending my fellow Americans. I was slightly offended on that one comment.

Does this work everywhere? Can I find a noodle shop in Nagoya?

Google Local only searches for locations in the United States right now. However, we plan on expanding this service to other parts of the world once we work out the kinks in this beta product. In the meantime, we recommend Miyoshiya for noodles in Naka-ku, near downtown.

You took offence because the truth hurts. Deal with it.

8 months in testing and they still can't do that properly. They could at least provide us with http://www.local.google.co.uk/
