Microsoft has just released the first Release Candidate, build 2096, for Windows XP Service Pack 2 to beta testers on its WindowsBeta web site.

Currently only the English build is available however the German and Japanese versions should follow shortly, giving the users who were left out in the 2082 interim release a new build to play with.

Integrated images are also not available yet but as stated above should be posted within a day or two, if not sooner.

The executable weighs in at 273.32 MB.

For those not fortunate enough to be in the actual beta program Microsoft will be releasing RC1 to a larger audience very soon as part of the Technical Preview Program. We'll let you know when this option becomes available.

first time MS did that with a SP beta

It's the first time an SP has the potential to break so many existing apps too.
#1.2 bangbang023 on 18 Mar 2004 - 06:43
god forbid they advance the OS a little.
#1.3 Jugalator on 18 Mar 2004 - 07:05
Let's be honest here. Normally, advancing the OS a little through a SP doesn't break any apps.

However, this is a special case with MS taking quite extreme measures to get better security not only in their own OS, but also in applications written for it. I don't really have any problems with that as we should benefit from it in the long run.

Just thought I would mention it.

Just got done uninstalling 2082 and installing this build (RC1 = 2096 if you are interested). SP2 is indeed a bit of an overhaul and hopefully will help secure the average users computer much more than they currently are, as you are met immediately upon install with a Security Settings window.
#8 Mav Phoenix on 18 Mar 2004 - 08:06
Man SP2 is gonna be great.
#9 larsonyo on 18 Mar 2004 - 08:22
Yay! FINALLY got it all installed and running. (that install takes FOREVER, about an hour)

MS's new built-in firewall... It works great! Very easy to use, yet very powerful. I can see the lawsuits from all the current firewall companys coming...
#14.1 shen on 19 Mar 2004 - 00:43
for a moment, i thought the same thing, but now the way i see is that if all the current firewall companies were really doing their job well (ie, creating very powerful firewalls that get widespread use), then ms wouldn't need to incorporate one of their own to keep people out.

i'm not saying other firewalls don't work, but apparently not enough people know about them, or this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

my opinion: rock on, microsoft. rock on.

Upgraded to WU5 RC1 today (on SP1). I'm still a bit too 'scaredy' to go SP2.

funny that it is now smaller then it was before.
#17.1 Shagin099 on 18 Mar 2004 - 11:52
yeah, i thought so too... I extracted 2082 and it contained the full versions of media center and tablet PC, not just updates so thats why it was so large... I havnt had a chance to look at this one yet, but i assume MS found a way to make it slipstream correctly on those versions without having the whole package.

Is the Remote Desktop concurrent sessions enabled for this? Or is it another registry change?
#20 hobsgrg on 18 Mar 2004 - 14:20
hurrah rc1 already, wasn't that long since the last build, still not had my email informing me I can download it, but then it took a day or two with the 2082 build becoming available before Microsoft sent my email informing me it was available to download. Downloading it now

Can someone explain what exactly a Release Candidate is compared to the other releases of service pack 2?,does it mean its no longer beta

can you help me as I'm a little confused
#22.1 NeoSoft on 18 Mar 2004 - 21:15
No, Release Candidates are still beta, however, it does mean that most if not all bugs are worked out (at least, that's the definition that I've read on Microsoft's site)!
#22.2 clonk on 19 Mar 2004 - 08:49
A beta is a piece of software that still has the potential to have features added to it. A release candidate is feature frozen (no new features can be added, only work on existing bugs). So basically what you see in RC1 is what the final SP will be.

Does anybody know what the /execute addition after /fastdetect within boot.ini does as i haven't seent his before?
#23.1 EZRecovery on 20 Mar 2004 - 01:49
Windows NT, 2000 and XP use a configuration file called BOOT.INI to control how the operating system is booted and any startup options. By modifying the startup switches you can manage the boot process including booting Windows in Safe mode, creating a log file, or disabling the splash screen.

More info here:
