XP_2003 has posted some screenshots of a beta version of MSN Messenger 4 for the Apple Mac. Although there haven't been any major changes from previous versions, XP_2003 has noted that there have been a lot of icon changes. If MSN Messenger 4 is released with features like it has in beta then Mac users will find themselves still behind the PC version which has more advanced features and simple customisation options like personal display pictures and custom emoticons. Microsoft's failure to update its Mac Messenger client will surely disappoint Mac users.

Yes, because Userpictures are what defines a client

I'd still rather take Adium...
#3.1 Rudy on 22 Mar 2004 - 17:09
no but i dont understand why it doesnt have half the feature the pc version has
#3.2 jagedEdge on 22 Mar 2004 - 22:28
Their Mac division has started to taper off. Hell, they don't even have good Exchange support in Entourage. It's still IMAP.

Adium is better than this. It'll probably support MSN user pictures soon (whenever libgaim supports it).

I still don't understand why MS produces applications that are so much visually nicer for macs (office, messenger and the old IE).
I know they are different programming teams but would it hurt to share some skills?

This is your opinion , bub.
Bright blue gel MSN icons make me want to puke from bad taste
I don't like OS X also in general but this is especially bad

I have a beta version, and let me tell you, it SUCKS. No audio and video support, the only thing "new" is that it has the same emoticons msn6 comes with.

Go with amsn or dmsn, 2 clients with all the features msn6 has (except audio and video) plus some more
#8.1 Rudy on 22 Mar 2004 - 17:43
amsn is the best thing next to the client for windows
#9 Carlson-online on 22 Mar 2004 - 18:27

ALOT can change between now and then, and dont 4get it doesnt come out until June.....

I've never found any use for MSN messenger. Nobody I know is on it, everyone is on AIM, so I just use iChat. A few of my friends are on Jabber, so I use Nitro.

My friends use Gaim for Windows and also have MSN accounts, so I've tried out the Mac client once or twice. It isn't horrible, it just dosn't do anything useful. I mean, it signs on to MSN, but aside from that, why the hell would I want to use it?
#11.1 IGx89 on 22 Mar 2004 - 19:10
For me, I've noticed almost the opposite: my friends who used to use ICQ or AIM have almost all transitioned to MSN. About a year ago I didn't need to use AIM any more, so I got rid of Trillian and solely use MSN Messenger 6 (which, to me, looks nicer than any other IM client)
#11.2 tapo on 22 Mar 2004 - 21:07
Well, it depends on what OS you use. A lot of my friends are on Macs, so they use iChat (The awesome AIM client.). Since MSN is bundled with Windows, it's probably easier to just use MSN.

I transitioned from ICQ, which is probably the first instant messenger I've ever used.

I use AIM as a secondary im service, since I know that when the dust settles, Jabber will win. It's an open protocol, anyone can run a server, and you can message from one server to another. It just makes sense. Like how the web was open and beat out the old closed services, like Compuserve, Prodigy, and AOL. And even before the web and something that applies better; email was open and beat services like MCI mail and other closed email systems.
#11.3 Smash on 23 Mar 2004 - 02:14
Opposite here! I don't know a single person who uses AIM, they ALL use MSN... And all my friends gave up on ICQ 3-4 years ago.
#12 BTallack on 22 Mar 2004 - 18:42
I'll stick to Proteus. I like the interface better.
#13 StuRReaL on 22 Mar 2004 - 19:37
Why isn't windows software that nice
#14 bravetiger25 on 22 Mar 2004 - 20:44

#15 shafi on 22 Mar 2004 - 20:53

i hate chat progs, period. mIRC is necessary for me, as is Messenger.. but ICQ, AIM, etc, are (thankfully) not. given that, i'd still say messenger for windows has improved tremendously in user appeal due to audio/video features, and improved gui, this last year..

it's nearly palatable. mac users SHOULD have similar functions. i don't like the cost/value ratio of apple, but the fact macs do well with vid/audio makes them a fine platform for multi-functional chats. Why not? geddoffayatails, M$, er somebody else will do what you dont..

FYI.. IRC = Internet Relay CHAT.

Way to look stupid
#16.2 gawdflesh on 23 Mar 2004 - 02:40
Funny...didn't seem like he was talking about protocols, he was referring to specific chat programs, of which mIRC is one of about 3 dozen programs for accessing IRC.

Way to try to make someone else look stupid and have it backfire on you.

I just don't understand why the Mac community knocks Microsoft so bad yet uses thier products on thier machines. IE, Office, Messenger.......I don't get it
#18 burnsflipper on 23 Mar 2004 - 22:19
that is a beautiful icon, hope someone can convert it
