what the hell? so im going to have to buy a new version of VS each year just so i can open up other peoples projects? i was quite happy with 2002, and then i found out it can't open 2003 vb projects! this is a total scam

It is not like that, Visual Studio 2005 will support .NET framework 2.0 and the new things which are coming with NT 6. Like before VS 2002 supports 1.0 and VS 2003 1.1 of the framework.

its not really like that.. if u want u stick with the older versions.. new vs.net runs on new .net framework.. and also got lots of features.. I got VS.NET 2002, 2003 and now cant wait for VS.NET Whidbey... and also next version after Whidbey is Orcas.. heh.. Orcas targets for the longhorn.
#1.3 neufuse on 24 Mar 2004 - 12:14
if you install the longhorn SDK on whidbey then you have the ability to program for longhorn.. XAML, Avalon, WinFX, WinFS projects are then added to it when you do that.

idbuythatforadollar - the only reason they wont open is because the version number in the resx files is diffrent, this is just to prevent a 1.1 .net app from being opened on a 1.0 .net vs.net... all you have to do is change the version number in the files and they work in different versions of VS.NET... it's just a compatability check, not a scam.

How much was the upgrade from 2002 to 2003? I've taken people to dinner for more.

Plus, there was a converter on codeproject.com that allowed you to convert 2003 project files into 2002 versions. I know, as I had to use it over and over again as they sent our upgrade for our one copy of enterprise edition very rapidly, meanwhile, they had a problem with the C# only copy that was on my machine, making the shipment delay by months. So we had 2003 running on one machine and my machine was 2002, so I had to constantly convert the project files back and forth. All the code ran perfectly fine on both machines.

2005, on the other hand, probably won't be quite so cheap of an upgrade. But its also going to have a hell of a lot of nice changes available. I'm most eager to start playing with Yukon extensions and am definately going to take a close look to see if they've cleaned up any of the disaster than winforms are (first step, have they made comboxes even remotely unbuggy)

I would bet they still give a break to people who have 2003... may not be as small of a pricetag as the 29 bux or whatever it was to go from 2002 to 2003, but i'd bet they still give a break on price.

can't wait to see it in action

I got VS.2002, VS.2003, and Whidbey. Whidbey is pretty nifty considering it is still Alpha. It would be great to get this version and see how much they have improved on it.

i have VS 2002 still. Never really got into programming on it much though. I still prefer a simple text editor

Maybe if I was a CS or a BCS instead of an Engineer.

LOL, I hear that!

Um, the header said "...to be released this week." What actualy happened to this week? I am quite eager to get my hands on an update for VS.

Anyone else know what is happening regarding this?
