Apple Computer Inc. will delay global sales of its new iPod mini digital music player until July due to stronger-than-expected U.S. demand, Apple said on Thursday. Tight supplies of the hard drive, which is at the core of the player, forced Apple to delay increasing manufacturing until July. U.S. demand has surpassed supply through June, according to Apple, whose shares rose 3 percent.

Apple said the problem lies with its supplier. "We're actually consuming just about all the 4 gigabyte, 1- inch drives they make. As they make more, we'll get more," said Greg Joswiak, Apple vice president of hardware product marketing. Analysts said that Hitachi Ltd. , which has said it makes nearly all of the cutting-edge one-inch drives that are made, is Apple's supplier. Neither Hitachi nor Apple have confirmed Hitachi makes the iPod drives.

Apparently the mini hard-drives in these iPods are actually worth more then the iPod itself. Probably explains the high demand (well, not just THAT reason...).

Yup, just got this in an e-mail

Dear Customer

Thanks for registering with Apple to be kept up to date on iPod mini in Europe. Today we announced that Apple has moved iPod mini Worldwide availability to July. Please see our Press Release below.

CUPERTINO, California--March 25, 2004--AppleŽ today announced that it is
moving the worldwide availability of iPod(TM) mini to July due to the much
stronger than expected demand in the U.S. far exceeding the total
planned supply through the end of June. Apple expects to ramp up its
manufacturing of the iPod mini to meet worldwide demand in the July
quarter.

well i sincerely hope that the mini-ipod's battery is better than the normal one... which it probably isn't.

iPod's are a waste of money. they sure look good and are nice to use but i'd like to see someone getting this supposed 8 hours of use out of them. my one never lasts longer than 6 hours and it is more or less brand new. in 6 months time it'll probably last 2 hours. this is a disgrace for a product of this price and without a replaceable battery too.

my advice is DON'T BUY AN iPOD. there are better players out there in terms of battery performance and other features. all the iPod has is nice looks and ease of use.
Quote this comment #5.1 Posted by dp123 on 25 Mar 2004 - 19:45
I still get near 8 hours after two years of use.
Quote this comment #5.2 Posted by aboi on 25 Mar 2004 - 19:55
8 hours is enough. if you listen more then 8 hours straight. you must be a very lonely person.
Quote this comment #5.3 Posted by wideboy on 25 Mar 2004 - 19:58
well it's nice to hear someone who does. i personally know no one who gets anywhere near 8 hours and most people who i've spoke to - apart from the trendy ones who just like it for it's 'cool' appeal - would not have bought one if they knew how poor the battery is. and let's face it, the battery on a portable device is of utmost importance and there are much better players out there, and cheaper too.

apart from the battery though, the ipod is wonderful to use and look's great.

no, i think it's more of a case of having to charge to f*cking thing every other day. i listen to it to and from work 1.5 hours each way and so after the 2nd day i have to charge it again. my concern is that after a while batteries deteriorate and so i gather that in - say - 6 months time i'm gonna have to charge it every day.

if that is not the case then someone who has had an ipod for over 6 months can correct me....
Quote this comment #5.5 Posted by NinjaMonkey82 on 25 Mar 2004 - 20:15
When I bought my iPod in January I was worried about the problem. Before I purchased it I talked with several people I know who had the original iPod and some whoe bought the 3G when it first came out. None of them had any problems with the battery. Any battery is going to deteriorate over time but everyone with the 1G iPod that I talked to still got about 6 hrs out of it. After hearing that and that Apple will replace batteries for $99 I went ahead and bought it. I have no regrets so far. I love the fact that I can boot OS X off of it if for some reason my computer won't start and my address book is in there if I need a phone number for some reason and I can put RSS feeds and read them on my way to work, my iCal sycs with it as well.

I don't need a player that has millions of features I'll never use like video playback, WMA support, etc. The iPod is a pleasure to use its design looks great and it is functional with the touch wheel and it is easy to navigae unlike a lot of other players out there. I've also found a few websites that offer more powerful batteries so you can get longer playtime form it. They cost about $60 and I might just upgrade if my battery life starts to fade. Until then I am completly happy with my iPod.

If you are having battery problems, call Apple, you could have a bad battery.
Quote this comment #5.6 Posted by wideboy on 25 Mar 2004 - 20:51
i think i will give them a call but i imagine that they will say 6 hours is fine. i don't think it is though as my concern is what will it be like in 6 months? i just think for this price the consumer should expect better performance especially when other players last longer (alledgedly ), have an easily replaceable battery, and are cheaper. i think it is major flaw tbh.

thanks for your reply asnyway
Quote this comment #5.7 Posted by aaron901 on 25 Mar 2004 - 21:17
you shouldn't have bought an iPod if battery life is your utmost concern for an mp3 player. Apple says clearly that it'll last for 8 hours (mine still does after 6 months of use), it's not like they lie to you about it. blame yourself. and not everyone would sacrifice looks and ease of use for longer battery life, that's why we have a wide range of mp3 players out there. kick yourself for picking a product that doesn't suit you.
Quote this comment #5.8 Posted by wideboy on 25 Mar 2004 - 21:37
so you think the ipod's performance is acceptable for its price and compared to its competitors? my point is that it is not and this is something which apple are keeping very quiet about. an apple representative even refused to comment about the ipods battery when being questioned about it on tv.

btw you are right about i should kick myself. i should've researched this more thoroughly but how many people honestly do? i am one of many people who believed the hype and just went out and bought it. i read lots of reviews and not one mentioned the battery as the reviewers probably only used the thing for about 2 hours before writing about it. and so couldn't tell.

i'm just trying to point out the other side of the ipod that many people don't know because - to the best of my knowledge - battery life is a pretty important feature of any portable device, regardles of how cool or nice it looks. let people make their own judgement.
Quote this comment #5.9 Posted by NinjaMonkey82 on 25 Mar 2004 - 21:43
Wideboy, will your iPod still be under it's one year warrenty? If it is I think Apple says if battery life is less than half of what is expected they will replace the battery. So check your battery life before your warranty ends to see if its longer than four hours if its not call Apple or go to an Apple store and have them replace it. That's my advice if you are concerned.
Quote this comment #5.10 Posted by wideboy on 25 Mar 2004 - 22:02
yes it is under warranty as i only recently bought it. thanks for that piece of info. i didn't know that and that gives me some piece of mind.

QUOTE (#5.
so you think the ipod's performance is acceptable for its price and compared to its competitors?

yes i do. as i said before, i wouldn't sacrifice looks for battery life, and 8 hours is good enough to me.
Quote this comment #5.12 Posted by NinjaMonkey82 on 26 Mar 2004 - 18:19
Apple considers any battery performing at half of their 8hr estimate of battery life as defective. So if its still under warrenty and not holding a charge tell Apple I'm sure they'll replace it.

Eight hours is good enough for me too but you have to remember for some people it isn't. I primarily use it on my train ride to work or in the car. While in the car I have a charger and during the day it doesn't matter becuase my ride isn't that long. But for people traveling on long flights or walking around with it all day they might not be able to charge it as often.

I am a huge Apple fan but I have to say they do need to work on battery life. If it was 10 hours I'd be very happy.

Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by dp123 on 25 Mar 2004 - 22:21
I assume you're angry at yourself. Why would you get rid of one thing before you get another? Why didn't you read one fo the hundreds of iPod Mini stories saying: "iPod Mini in short supply; sold out in most venues"?

Anyway, that's me... I guess you can be angry at whoever you want to be.
Quote this comment #15.2 Posted by aaron901 on 25 Mar 2004 - 22:51
because that way it can be sold at a higher price, isn't that common sense? i sold my old 1st gen 5GB iPod for the price of the 3rd gen 10GB iPod a week before it was announced, i know what i'm doing. i just sold my 3rd gen 15GB for nearly the price of a new 20GB iPod.

and yes i didn't read any of the iPod mini stories, i believed what's shown on Apple website, "available in april". so i'm angry.

Apple still has to learn to anticipate sales of killer products...
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by roadwarrior on 25 Mar 2004 - 22:49
I you read the article, you'd know that it's not so much Apple's fault as it is the fault of the company that supplies the hard drives for it. Apple is basically buying every drive they can produce.
Quote this comment #17.2 Posted by superfula on 25 Mar 2004 - 23:33
Way to copy that off someone's website.

If you go back to the time these were announced, you'd seem almost everyone knocking them because they weren't cheap enough. If you were to base it on that, there's no way Apple could anticipate that it would sell good. Aside from that fact, the hd manufacturer isn't making the hds fast enough. So I fail to see how you, or the person who you are quoting, could possibly blame this on Apple.
Quote this comment #17.3 Posted by Phillip on 26 Mar 2004 - 04:59

and does this also mean that 4th gen ipods are going to be delayed as well?

Woah.

Does anyone know if iPod mini's will be available at my local CompUSA (In the El Paso, Texas area) by April 6th?

I really want to get one for my birthday
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by dp123 on 26 Mar 2004 - 00:27
Why must it be your local COMPUSA?

If you order it from Apple's site, you may receive a message about a wait of X days or weeks (probably 2-3 weeks at the max.)

If you go to an Apple Store (which may not be an option for you), you can put yourself on a wait list... most stores have a wait list of 20 to 200+ people...

If you go to Amazon or any web retailer selling them, you'll have a similar wait to the Apple web site.

If you go to an authorized retailer, they may or may not have a wait list option.

The demand right now is too high to expect any retailer or web site to have any reliable quantity of them in stock.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #19 Posted by Himosan on 26 Mar 2004 - 06:57
Local appl store has a wait list of ~30, probably more if you dont want "silver", which personally looks like it was forged from scrap left over at the g5 case factory. My g/f is in standing in the long line for pink ones.

Still when I was in Japan couple weeks ago a lot of people were anticipating the roll out in April. No wait they all have MD's which last forever and are starting to support lossy formats.

Quote this comment Reply to this comment #20 Posted by atpcz on 26 Mar 2004 - 15:37
god bless ebay for having pink mini's in stock to surprise the girlfriend for her birthday at the beginning of april. phew.
