Intel is confident that WiMAX eventually will gain acceptance among laptop and handset makers, similar to that enjoyed by Wi-Fi in recent years. WiMax has a longer reach than Wi-Fi, with a range of up to 25 miles, and offers data transmission at some 70 megabits per second.
Intel has hooked up with global networking-equipment provider Alcatel to push the wireless broadband technology known as "WiMax," with an eye on delivering high-speed Internet access to emerging markets. WiMax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) technology is based on the IEEE 802.16d specification and is designed to deliver wireless, stationary, broadband Internet access. It also features a mobile variant, enabling mobile workers to connect with the Internet or an intranet from sites inside and outside the company.
