Thanks to CountryKING™ for posting this in our BPN

Those wanting to check out the latest and greatest Windows Update are being given the opportunity to help test the site by Microsoft. Using this link users can sign up to the beta and use it on their Windows XP machines. We haven't confirmed whether this works on Windows 2000 machines at present.

If you're interested in signing up to the beta then check out the site on a machine other than Windows XP SP2 Beta.

I have tested this on Win2k about 2 weeks ago, it alters the automatic updates in the control panel to be the same as the XP one.

Well, first you have to install the new Windows Update component. Then, you have to download over 2MB for further components (without letting you choose which ones...even though I selected Custom):

To use this latest version of Windows Update, you will need to upgrade some of its components. This version provides you with the following enhancements to our service:

    Express and custom installation
Choose only the most recent critical updates or pick and choose from all available updates.

    Smarter downloads
If downloading is interrupted, the process will start up where it left off the next time you download that update.

    Smaller downloads
Only the files your computer needs are downloaded, saving download time and connection-speed costs.

    One version
Only the most recent updates are offered to you.

    Less clutter
You can now hide updates you don't want to see.

    Update news
A News from Microsoft section on the Windows Update home page displays tips and the latest information.

That site has been like that for a long time...
At least I accessed it from non XP-SP2 machines some time ago, when I got the mail from the beta team saying the site was up...

Forget that, it needs an MSN passport ID. I can't be assed with that crap.

I will just wait for the final SP.

If you have MSN messenger installed and can talk to people in your contact list then you have Microsoft Passport installed too. This will automatically sign you into passport sites. As the name implies it checks who you are and is/was intended to provide tracking data when you entered some MS approved web sites. Kind of a way of tracking your behavior and targeting services at you - much in the same way as a lot of companies accused of producing spyware do today. Of course since it was an MS product it was never called that - but oh well I'm not going to get into that. Suffice to say that it seems to have largely failed anyway, due to a spectacular lack of support from the general public.

Anyway when I clicked the link to sign up for the beta it asked for my MSN passport.

    That's all i know...

Oh I get it, you just have to fib and say you are a registered WU beta tester. Then it doesn't ask for any ID at all...

If you click and say you are not registered, only then does it ask for an MSN passport...

I"m tired of any software people that put out beta's to the PUBLIC........
heck, half of them can't even find the button that opens their "cup holder" LOL
I like stability, because I'm just too tired at the end of the day, having to put up
with customers who do stupid things, to play with beta......personally, I wait a
week or two after something comes out as a "final".....jussssstttttttttt to make
    sure it's somewhat stable....

Installed it on my XP machine and it keeps failing on these updates:
Microsoft Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS2) Client version 2.0 Beta (Error Code: 80070643)
March Security Patch BETA (7) (Error Code: 8008000

    Any ideas?
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by Andareed on 30 Mar 2004 - 13:45
LOL At least you get an error code. I just get a big fat Failed. Doesn't even try to download the updates, mind you.
    Quote this comment #18.2 Posted by Frost_311 on 30 Mar 2004 - 14:28
Make sure you haven't disabled BITS in your Services. If it is disabled the downloads won't work. Hope that helps... I had mine disabled and it failed so I knew thats what it was right away, enabled it, started the service and then it worked fine.

It came with SP2 looks more clean. If you are looking for regluar updates click custom update. Auto update is just for beta download crap that say should not be downloaded on primary machine.

I never got any errors. So no idea why you all are. Just install SP2 review and click windows update. It the same damn thing. It told me I need a password to get autoupdates so I had to add a password to my XP account only thing I hate.

Does this check for updates on all microsoft products, or is it just OS related?
    Quote this comment #20.1 Posted by Frost_311 on 30 Mar 2004 - 14:30
Just Windows updates for newer versions, XP, 2003, maybe 2000...
Quote this comment #20.2 Posted by chorpeac on 30 Mar 2004 - 14:39
are they going to incorporate updates for other things or will it only be OS updates?
    Quote this comment #20.3 Posted by Frost_311 on 30 Mar 2004 - 17:35
    Only OS... like always

Oh goody. It updated automatic updates without really telling me that it did so. (To the version that comes with sp2) Now it's going to nag me about updating with the 'march beta updates' non stop.

I'm just hoping that the final release will be installable over the beta release, without having to system restore or do any other finny things.

I was wrong the error was cause SP2 blocking activex plugin so I had to lower secuirty level to low to update.

I went to update office 2003 and it would not let me after I lower it no problem.
