Intel readies environmentally friendly microchips

Intel Corp said on Wednesday it would start shipping chips with 95 percent less lead than its current products later this year in response to global demand for more environmentally friendly electronics goods.

The world's largest chip maker plans to launch the new microprocessors and chipsets by the third quarter of 2004. "Lead-free is required for the future. This is the right time for this launch of the technology," Michael Garner, Intel's director of materials technology operation, said on the sidelines of a chip seminar showcasing Intel's latest technologies.
