RealNetworks on Monday released an update to its digital audio and video software that promises support for every major content format and online music download service.

The latest version of the RealPlayer 10 music-playing software offers consumers the ability to use all the content delivery systems the company's competitors developed, including Microsoft's Windows Media format and Apple Computer's iTunes music service. The digital media software maker is hoping that the flexibility of its new software will distinguish it from rival music stores and software packages. RealNetworks first debuted a test version of the software at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. The company distributes RealPlayer 10 for free via its Web site to consumers in North America, Europe and Japan.

Since RealONE, it sucks! But RealPlayer 8 is pretty good. No ads to worry about in Linux.

Sorry, I tried to ................[buffering]...........answer this a few min........[buffering]...utes
ago but it kee........[buffering].......p buffering all the time. LOL
I don't use it anymore, I use the codec for WMP.

#4.1 semifamous on 07 Apr 2004 - 22:32
Of course, you realize that buffering is not the fault of the software codec they're using for the audio/video... right?

Buffering means that either the server you're connected to isn't putting the stuff out fast enough or your own pipe isn't fat enough. It's just a matter of choosing the correct bandwidth stream.
#4.2 Glasya-Labolas on 07 Apr 2004 - 23:26
Why is it then that (in years past) when I would play a locally saved .rm file, it would *BUFFER* just as often as if I were streaming?

Hmm.

Anyway, anything real can do, real alternative can do better.
#4.3 bits on 08 Apr 2004 - 08:33
umm real alternative is just the real media codecs.. its the exact same as install real player.. real alternative isnt a player or anything its just the codecs that would otherwise be installed by real player..

so no real alternative cant play wmp, aac, access itunes online store etc etc.. but neither can real player... it merely just embeds the other software titles inside itselfs.. meaning ur running the other companys product anyways and whats worse is that your running realplayer+quicktime when playing quicktime files aka two bloaty programs that run like ****...

Nobody cares.

DIE, REAL.

Gotta admint that I loved Real Waaayyyyyyyyy back in the day. But I came to hate their player when it started taking over my pc. Ever since I have only used WMP and QT.

Unfortunatley, a lot of sites use Real exclusively and for that I just pass them up.
#6 PR. on 07 Apr 2004 - 20:44
I only use Real to listen again on BBC radio and the new skip system that downloads music ahead of playing it allowing you to skip a track you don't like it a good idea
#7 Bryan000 on 07 Apr 2004 - 20:49
First of all RealPlayer 10 has been available from real.com for what, a month? It's been talked to death on doom9

Second, I think Real10 is the best version of realplayer EVER (is that not saying much?) Most of the annoyances are gone and single annoyance left is fixed with ease (just rename/delete the file named realsched.exe located in Crogram FilesCommon FilesRealUpdate_OB while realplayer is closed)

Real Alternative still lacks some functionality so to be able to access some things you need the real realplayer. I'm not ordinarily much of an advocate of Real, but if you have hated the last few versions of Realplayer I think you'll find that this version is much better

Personally, the media player I like the most is Quicktime. Excellent on the Mac, decent on Windows (Player bad, plugin good) and somehow, and don't ask me how, it works in Wine on Linux.

Using Realplayer on Windows and my Mac, I'm not all against it. The Mac version is nice, the Win version needs a little tweaking to get all the useless crap out of the way. If the update is good, I'm not all against trying it.

BTW, my opinion of Windows Media Player is that it's a bloated, crappy, unstable piece of useless spyware. It has NEVER worked for me. The player crashes, the plugin simply refuses to load. The Mac version is decent for playing WMV files, but horrible for streaming.
#11.1 Scorched on 08 Apr 2004 - 19:01
I agree with you in general about WMP. I use Media Player Classic now. It's pretty nice. And with the Real Alternative codecs, you don't have to install RealPlayer, unless you run into a compatibility issue.

#12 altermind on 08 Apr 2004 - 01:54
I used to run a company that did real media encoding for bussinesss..... DAMM that program sucks ass

like it's any better now

they should pick a new name and try to make a working program
#13 cork1958 on 08 Apr 2004 - 02:25
I've called it the Real Awful player since day one. About the only piece of software that is as bad as it is, is AOHELL!! Isn't it still included with AOHELL as the default player? Wouldn't put either of these programs on an enemies computer. Wait a minute. Yes, I would!!
#14 netstarman on 08 Apr 2004 - 03:52
Hooo-Raaayyyyy for buffering from realone.
#15 DJ Specs on 08 Apr 2004 - 05:41
Garbage!
#16 thenay on 08 Apr 2004 - 06:52
I don't even see why they make newer releases, it's ****buffering**** crap!
#17 MaceX on 08 Apr 2004 - 07:19
The whitehouse.gov uses realplayer as their default player when viewing video files, second is windows media player.

Do I see a conspiracy or am I just nuts?
#18 slowestborg on 08 Apr 2004 - 08:46
This piece of "software" should be left RE:alone
#19 JLP on 08 Apr 2004 - 09:21
It is still not as good as the old versions like 8 but it looks like opensource Helix base is already making it better. It is faster now and more stable. Still not 8 but still much better then Windows Media Player.
#20 www_dot_Tomd on 08 Apr 2004 - 11:07
the only reson i use Real player is for net midi!!!
#21 Mikeparkie on 08 Apr 2004 - 11:49
Must agree real player or the RealOne player is total trash. only user is for websites when its need for a plug in. ill use WMP9 which does everthing i need
#22 lukeh2004 on 08 Apr 2004 - 13:24
only good thing i've found is there's less buffering as you can allow it to temporarily cache the movie or wateva, a lot better for watchin some things... otherwise its crap and exactly the same as realone version 2 (or wateva they were on)
#23 Surr3al on 08 Apr 2004 - 17:22
download the real player alternative here:
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm

#24 StepASide on 08 Apr 2004 - 18:47
useless software..
#25 hardgiant on 08 Apr 2004 - 19:42
The sad thing is Real Player 10 could be a great video player if they would just remove all the junk that they insist on adding to it.
#26 insomniac9 on 09 Apr 2004 - 01:29
Use Jet Audio it's a lot easier to use and even has a tool for broadcasting your own radio station over the net.
#27 thexfile on 09 Apr 2004 - 04:11
