Business buying puts Dell back atop PC pile

PC shipments grew somewhat faster than expected during the first quarter of 2004, helping to hoist Dell into the No. 1 market share position, according to preliminary figures from research firms IDC and Gartner. Shipments of PCs totaled 41.3 million units worldwide, a year-over-year increase of about 17 percent, beating out forecasts of just more than 15 percent, according to IDC. That growth was propelled largely by a surge in businesses purchasing PCs.

Europe was the fastest-growing regional market due to renewed corporate buying and the strength of the euro. Gartner said that units shipped equaled 45.3 million worldwide, up 13.4 percent year over year but down 6.8 percent from the previous quarter, a normal seasonal decline, said Gartner analyst Charles Smulders. IDC and Gartner use slightly different methods for measuring shipments, which causes the disparity between their numbers. While Dell and Hewlett-Packard, the world's two largest PC makers, have traded the top spot since HP completed its merger with Compaq Computer in May 2002, the past quarter changed that equation.

    I dread using a Dell everyday at work. There is no way in hell I would purchase one for myself.

    Their desktop machines aren't the greatest but you really can't beat some of their prices for starter machines.

    As for their laptops, my roommate just bought one in January (thus helping to put Dell at the top this quarter) and I haven't seen a laptop that is nicer expect for the brand new Dell Inspiron XPS Gamer and 9100. Everyother laptop can't even come close in resolution for the price. I love his laptop and I'd buy one if I had a cool 2.5K to blow.

    Dell is a reliable manufacturer and their PCs are getting cheaper.

    But what I've heard of Dell machines is that they use custom made motherboards and use specific RAM, still DDR but a specific brand which limits the ability to upgrade, the last choice is to call up Dell and ask them for an upgrade.

    I'm not sure if this is 100% true because I know somebody who upgraded his graphics card and there were no problems and also his memory and Harddrive and it still works. He's also reformatted his disk and created 3 partitions. 2 on the 180GB and 1 on the 60GB so maybe Dell PCs are not as limited as I thought.

    Yes it is true that you have to use their upgrades. Not only that, if you do have a problem they do their utmost to put the blame on you. Their next business day warranty is a bunch of h**sesh*t.
    It took me 3 weeks to finally get my motherboard and harddrive replaced and when the tech(if you can call him that) was finished he had put the jumpers in the wrong positions and left before even checking to see if it worked.
    The idiotic phone support said it was my problem because it was "software related".
    All I can say is BUYER BEWARE.
