Microsoft has taken the unusual step of patching release candidate testing software by issuing three critical patches for Windows XP Service Pack 2 RC1. Pre-release software is buggy by definition and users normally expect to have problems fixed either in future test versions or in the final code.

Testers visiting Windows Update found the updates last week, according to the BetaNews site. Two of the problems involved the Windows Firewall, a renamed and greatly updated version of Windows XP's former Internet Connection Firewall that will debut with the service pack. The other problem involved dropped virtual private networking connections with Linksys gateway devices.

Hehe.. WEll, good on Microsoft . I'm already trying RC1 on a lab of computers at school to wee dout any problems before final, so it's nice to see they're supporting a pre-release patch to some extent.

I just dont get this one... patches for release candidates? The software engineers in Microsoft must have thought the SP2 has already been released to the public. :p

Why ? all they are doing is testing some updates they have made for SP2.

Microsoft has a responsibility to its customers. Regardless of Services Pack 2 Release Candidate 1 (RC1). Nobody is perfect, you will see mistakes.

They intentionally releases it as patches because they want to test the functionality of Automatic Update and Windows Update V5. Is that concept so hard to grasp?

Glad someone else noticed this. Although in the past they wouldn't usually release patches I agree this time they're mainly releasing them for AU testing and SP2s new patching abilities.

would have been great if the patches didn't break worse an already broken ICS.

Ahh well.
