Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday unveiled iTunes 4.5, a new version of the company's music jukebox software that contains many new features. Included in the new version is iMix, Music Videos, Video Trailers, a new lossless audio codec, free weekly downloads and Radio Charts. According to information posted on Apple's Music Store early Wednesday morning, iTunes users now have access to a free downloable single, which will be made available every Tuesday.

New Features

  • iMix Post and email songs in your playlists for everyone to see. Rate iMixes from other music lovers to drive them up or down the charts, and discover new music at the same time.
  • Music Video Section With a total of 72 videos, users can watch the video of a song and below the video purchase the song while they watch. Movie trailers have made their way from Apple's QuickTime to iTunes in the new release, as well.
  • Radio Charts will track the most played songs in more than 1200 stations across hundreds of cities nationwide, according to Apple.
  • Lossless Encoder Use the new lossless encoder to import music from CDs and achieve sound quality indistinguishable from the original, at about half the original file size. Plays in iTunes and on iPod.
  • Automatically convert WMA to AAC. Convert the music you saved in Windows Media Player (unprotected WMA files) to AAC format.

Still a memory hog
#4.1 Test Zero on 28 Apr 2004 - 17:27
I've got half a gig of memory, so it suits me fine.
#4.2 NeoSoft on 28 Apr 2004 - 17:32
I have a full gig of memory in my PC and 2 gig in my MAC, so no problems here!
#4.3 BiGdUsTy on 28 Apr 2004 - 17:42
I have a gig aswell but any music program that takes up 30 to 50 megabytes of ram has issues. Wow and i thought winamp 5 was bloated. I guess i'm just a speed freak.

Unless your editing music with something like cool edit pro no music program should need that much memory.
#4.4 nic on 28 Apr 2004 - 18:25
BiGdUsTy: the player is such a memory hog because of the API they have going for it. And, I agree with you, no music player should sink that much ram.

Winamp 5 is bloated? right now mine is taking 5 megs (but I'm using a classic skin).

Memory Hogs usually = Processor Hogs as well. Which really isn't a problem unless you want to listen to music while you play some processor intense game.

So give me my Winamp. I'm a computer user who wants a really flexable media player. And winamp gives me complete control of what I want (not to mention, Milkdrop and controllability w/ my cordless gamepad ).

all of this is just a matter of opinion. And opinion's are like assholes, everyone's got one.
#4.5 einsteinbqat on 28 Apr 2004 - 19:59
I updated iTunes (and QT and iPod). I don't see any increase in memory use with iTunes. In fact, iTunes is currently using 3-5% of CPU and 8-14MB of memory.
#4.6 Surr3al on 28 Apr 2004 - 21:51
Go winamp!

iTunes is a burden on any computer, gig of memory or not. Takes too long to load, etc, etc... I want my music player to start in a less than 5 seconds. Oh, and I don't have a crappy computer, 512 ram, 2.2 gig
#4.7 Danrarbc641 on 28 Apr 2004 - 22:40
I think the idea behind iTunes is it's always running, instead of something you open and close constantly.
#4.8 mipra on 30 Apr 2004 - 04:45
lucky you!

iTunes-Sidekick doesn't appear to work w/ this new version of iTunes.

The version of Sidekick I use is 1.2.
#5.1 Avi on 28 Apr 2004 - 17:55
What's "Sidekick"? Addon? Hack? Any link? (too lazy to google it)
#5.2 digistil on 28 Apr 2004 - 18:39
It's an iTunes plug-in that minimizes iTunes to the system tray.
#5.3 Autumnmist on 28 Apr 2004 - 19:18
Don't use Sidekick... use localhost's Multi-Plugin... he's up to v0.5 now and it's got all the functions of Sidekick and more. (Plus as far as we can tell, Sidekick isn't being developed anymore). Google or search the Aqua-Soft forums for Multi-Plugin
#5.4 digistil on 28 Apr 2004 - 20:34
Thanks a ton Autumnmist!!!

Here's the link for everyone: Multi-Plugin v.52

Ummmm... That board is in Hebrew...

On another note: all you need to do is load that hebrew IPB, then copy the original link and it will download.

iTunes 4.5 also includes a new Party Mix feature, which acts more like a winamp-style playlist

I like the new features, but this version seems to be using twice as much memory on my computers
(33mb up from <16mb)

i noticed quicktime 6.5.1. anything different from the other 6.5?
#6.2 tapo on 29 Apr 2004 - 16:03
From Apple's Software Update app:

QuickTime 6.5.1 delivers many important updates, including:
- Apple Lossless Encoder, a new lossless audio codec that retains the full quality of uncompressed CD audio while requiring only about half the storage space.
- Significant improvements to AAC encoding, resulting in high-quality sound over a full range of audio frequencies.
- Enhanced support for iTunes and other QuickTime-based applications.
#6.3 mipra on 30 Apr 2004 - 04:46
thanks for posting the updates
#7 bingham. on 28 Apr 2004 - 17:44
im having problems downloading the ipod update, it only downloads like 400k of it
(2 replies) #8 pctuk on 28 Apr 2004 - 17:46
Wait, let me get this clear. Is there any support for WMA, or is it just conversion?

Also, it's annoying how you can't share music with people who are using earlier versions.
#8.1 digistil on 28 Apr 2004 - 18:26
It only allows you to convert a WMA (unprotected only obvs) to an AAC.
#8.2 tomaras on 29 Apr 2004 - 03:59
Does anyone know if it will convert "lossless" WMA9 files to AAC? Is there a kbps limit on the WMA9 files it will convert?
#9 NinjaMonkey82 on 28 Apr 2004 - 18:01
There are some pretty cool new features I can't wait to get home and play with it.
(3 replies) #10 Mav Phoenix on 28 Apr 2004 - 18:17
Free weekly singles. Nice.
#10.1 Krankerz on 28 Apr 2004 - 20:04
Any idea how this will work out? Will they have a dedicated section on iT:MS where you can only download a defined selection of songs, or do you just get one free download from anything you want?
#10.2 Betaz on 28 Apr 2004 - 21:03
It's only one certain song. Look at iTMS right now, in the middle it will tell the free song
#10.3 Jstphish on 29 Apr 2004 - 21:43
it's Avril Lavigne right now
(4 replies) #11 Miran on 28 Apr 2004 - 18:58
Does it still skip whenever you do something else on your computer, like click the start button?
#11.1 Danrarbc641 on 28 Apr 2004 - 19:07
It never skipped for me, and I'm on a 733Mhz P3.
#11.2 JaggedFlame on 28 Apr 2004 - 20:35
Skips for me occasionally on an Athlon XP 1700+ with 640 MB of RAM. It skipped hardcore when it was converting my WMAs on the side.
#11.3 threetonesun on 28 Apr 2004 - 20:55
Sounds like there's something wrong there, just the other day I was converting some old stuff I had to mp3 in CDex, while playing in iTunes and working on a paper. Same specs, not even close to skipping ...
#11.4 JaggedFlame on 29 Apr 2004 - 00:49
There might be. I didn't have this problem with any other music players, though.

It's not anything serious, in any case. I'm still using iTunes as my primary player.
(2 replies) #12 Danrarbc641 on 28 Apr 2004 - 19:08
Lossless encoder huh? Is this a little hint of what the next iPod revision might support?
#12.1 Mav Phoenix on 28 Apr 2004 - 19:38
I think it does with the new iPod update.

Anyone has problem accessing iTMS? I get an error (-3259) telling me to check my network connection. I'm using high-speed...

Edit: Problem solved! Reason: iTMS is currently down.

#22 threetonesun on 28 Apr 2004 - 21:31
This is pretty nice, I watch the Quicktime trailers a lot, and the Party Shuffle playlist is really cool.
#23 Slaughter on 28 Apr 2004 - 21:48
Just downloaded the new verison of iTunes and Quicktime today. Seemed to run fine for me.
#24 hardgiant on 28 Apr 2004 - 22:04
Itunes is nice but Winamp 2.x still plays my MP3's fine and doesn't hog resources.
#25 Jimmerz28 on 29 Apr 2004 - 00:41

(1 reply) #26 mr_da3m0n on 29 Apr 2004 - 01:46
Is it exclusively for PCs?
I haven't used my iBook much lately, too busy doing Linux boxes ^_^;
#26.1 aristotle-dude on 29 Apr 2004 - 02:24
Nope. The only feature exclusive to windows is WMA import.
#27 wa22guy on 29 Apr 2004 - 03:00
Yeah my iPod update just HANGS and HANGS... anyone else having this prob?
#28 wa22guy on 29 Apr 2004 - 03:02
Also... my Serial Number and stuff for my iPod isnt listed in the update... is this normal?
#29 Albemuth on 29 Apr 2004 - 07:15
Just wanted to add that you can convert wma to mp3. It seems that itunes will just use whatever format you have chosen to rip cds in. So make sure to go into prefs and change it.

I was wondering when Apple was going to update iTunes just the other day and now that I have it I'm loving this update. The party mix is amazing ... finally I can enque music! This feature is even better than Winamp3's enque system. I can actually see when everything is coming up instead of searching for the songs that are in the que. It's not that I didn't like Winamp3's system, it was great until I used iTunes Party Shuffle which I like better.

The only thing they didn't do that I want them to was enable the ability to move the song name category (ie. Song #, Artist, Album, Song Title).

"oh dear. thanks for introducing us windows users to itunes. if it didn't use quicktime as backend i suppose i'd be way faster. oh and nevermind the fact that itunes 4..5 removed all my cdroms without asking me. thanks for that too. i'm back to ye good ole winamp 2.9x."
