Microsoft has almost completed its Route 64 series of roadshows in Europe, intended to promote its Windows XP 64 bit edition - scheduled to be released in the fourth quarter of this year. The last gig in Europe happens in Moscow on May 18th next, and then the tour starts to happen all over America, winding up in Asia towards the end of June and the beginning of July. The one day seminars are aimed at developers who want to find out all about 64 bit versions of XP, Server, .net, Framework and SQL Server. The seminars cover the Windows 64-bit roadmap and we understand that AMD and Intel are at all the sessions to encourage the porting of software to iAMD64.

"iAMD64" that's a new term, I guess the "i" means Intel.

it's not a real term, this is the inquirer again. But i think they should get a standard term. let's just go back to x86-64. everyone agreed ?

"AMD64" for AMD and "IA-32E" for Intel.

The future is all 64 bit. Why MS are even bothering to spend so much time developing a 32 bit version of Windows (aka Longhorn) is a total mystery.

Longhorn also comes in a 64-bit flavour

Maybe it has a little something to do with the fact that NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO HAVE A 64-BIT PROCESSOR?

64-bit may be the future, but that doesn't mean everyone drops everything and upgrades to it. I can't believe you would make such an assumption.

Stupid comment, Microsoft isn't tied to 32bit during Longhorns development it can easily compile a NT kernal for 64bit CPUs just as easily you would any application/os. The only difficultly is having 64bit drivers too.

Cough Cough! Linux has had 64-bit processor support for their kernels for well over a year now, so MS is really behind on this one!

Everyone already knows this, but that was not the point of the article, now was it?

AMD64 will be roaring in 2006-2007 when Longhorn finally comes out.

It would make sense that they would focus on AMD64 alot more.

PS: Wonder how viable 32 bit will be in 2006 ?

I don't understand this, why would intel be encouraging "the porting of software to iAMD64"?

It's as if the writer accuses intel of coyping amd.
