After walking through the isles of E3 in search of something to make our jaws drop, we came across Alienware’s booth and their new ALX brand of uber gaming systems. Given Alienware’s reputation of producing gaming rigs based upon the fastest hardware available, we had high expectations for the new products. For the first time at E3, a company managed to beat our expectations and leave our jaws on the showroom floor.

All the technology seen at the show was a staple of a new product line for Alienware. The new ALX brand of gaming systems will cater to the cutting-edge enthusiast who needs the fastest hardware money can buy. Looking at the specifications for these new systems, it seems as though Alienware will be able to satisfy even the most discerning gamer.

I don't think so. They Voodoo 5 couldn't compete with the Geforce 2 GTS, the powerhouse at the time. The Voodoo 6 would've been great as a boat paddle, but that's about it.

Voodoo died because they simply couldn't keep up. Glide never made the jump to 32bit color, and Glide is the only thing Voodoo did well. It's D3D and OpenGL support were horrible (my Geforce256 did better at D3D than the Voodoo5).

Well said. They (3Df had too narrow of a focus. They saw the future in Glide, whereas Microsoft was pushing DirectX, and OpenGL had the best specs at the time. So, they died. That's how history works I suppose.

3dfx died because it made an unsuccessful attempt to become a vertically aligned company. Otherwise, they'd still be here.

Everyone made a good point, and all are correct to a certain degree. There were several factors that led to their demise. Personally, I knew they were toast the day they announced the purchase of STB.

I still have SLI in my secondary box, but I haven't played any games on it in years, it's primarily now just my ripping machine. My main box has a Voodoo5 PCI juicing my second monitor, and it comes in handy for those times I want to change primary video to PCI and play a Glide game.

why is the pc on but with no cpu or memory in it?!, or rather one cpu but no memory?
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by pappadj on 18 May 2004 - 02:59
I think the pics weren't high quality to tell the mem chips are there. If I'm not mistaken if you look at the bottom of the brackets you'll notice the 2nd and 4th... or is that 1st and 3rd... whatever have a small black line in the bracket and after looking at it for a few seconds I can depict a memory chip... I just think the image quality and the angle don't do enough justice to tell. Or they just hadn't put it in before demo'n the systems... don't think that's the case.

1st system has 2 procs water cooled... 2nd has 1 of 2 installed and air cooled.

Also to those comparing the voodoo2 to this make sure to read the details of the article, whereas the voodoo2 (I have one btw) uses a loopback cable and renders all the 3dwork demanded of it, this system is different as it uses a 3rd card to migrate the two and each work independently on 1/2 of the screen at a time. Much better system.... I can't wait for PCI-e now.. wholly shnikeys!

imagine slapping 2 Intel Prescotts and 2 X800 XTs in there!!
i would have to upgrade my box for years!!

    i bet w/ that setup, i would be able to run quake3 @ 500fps!!

Ok let me figure this out.... ATI x800 XT = $500x2= $1000 NO WAY I will never pay for that... sure graphics are going to be better but I can build a system for the cost of those 2 video cards.... Alien won't be getting my hard earned $$.....
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by Slugbait on 18 May 2004 - 16:44
Exactly. These machines aren't designed for people like you. They're designed for people who want the most cutting-edge machine, and have the money to burn. Even their single-card boxes are way beyond the cost of what you can build a system for.

Also note...this isn't a Dell or some homemade box. These guys build, configure and tweak these machines to within an inch of their lives. While we all sit and wonder why the box we just built won't post, gets too hot, has random lock-ups, has low numbers in 3DMark, etc, and troubleshoot for hours and post questions on forums, Alienware's boxes come out of the gate running in tip-top condition, with all of the current highest-quality components, ready to frag.
