Dell is releasing three new Axim personal digital assistants, adding the Bluetooth short-range wireless networking technology to its PDAs for the first time. The new Axim X30 models are also Dell's first PDAs to use Intel's new XScale processors. Four PXA270 processors were released in April, featuring various clock speeds and improved security and multimedia features. Dell customers can choose between the 312-MHz processor or the fastest chip in the group, the 624MHz processor. PalmOne's new Zire 72 was launched in April with the 312-MHz chip.

Adding Bluetooth

Dell's customers can choose between nonwireless or wireless versions of the X30. The two wireless configurations come with support for 802.11b Wi-Fi networks as well as Bluetooth. Bluetooth is designed as a cable-replacement technology for peripheral devices such as keyboards or headsets, said Gervaise Nix, product marketing manager for Axim. Several customers in Europe also use Bluetooth PDAs to connect to Bluetooth cell phones to synchronize data and connect to the Internet over the cell phone's modem, she said.

Yeah, I have an Axim X5 with a WLAN CF Card, good enough for me.

Same here........I've had an X5 since they came out. I use it so much, I've worn the silver off of one side from it and my inkpen/stylus going in and out of my shirt pocket. Built like a TANK! I bought an aluminum "flip" cover for it about a month after I got it and I wouldn't trade my X5 for anything. I just hope Dell releases an upgrade to the latest Pocket PC....

Cool, to me it looks like 45 minutes of uptime... I'm sorry, I love my Tungsten T3, but even the Tungsten has a low uptime with only bluetooth turned on...

right... all good for you, but for someone in the market for a PDA for the first time, me, then it's awesome.

one question.. the Dell model costs $349... why does the same 624MHz model cost $568 also? whats different... maybe im just not seeing it...

the $568 one comes with
Pharos Pocket GPS Navigator for Axim ($199)
and Leather Carrying Case for Dell Axim ($20)

so yeah, they basicly add those to your cart for you, its not really a special offer...

I kinda wouldnt have minded my new X3i to have bluetooth, but of course it's now 32 days old since I got it, so I can't trade it in for the X30.

funny word: non-wire-less
wire = with wires
wireless = without wires
nonwireless = in boolean login (not (not wire)) = wire

i hear on forums that dell stuff are horrible... are they so?
i wanted to buy an X3i, but now i should wait for X30 to arrive (europe) and read some reviews about it...

I don't know about everyone elses experience with Dell PDA's but mine has been excellent! Bought my X5 (400mhz) january of last year. Yes, it might be a bit
big, but I like it! The rubber grips on the side are really nice. It's bright, GREAT
battery life, and is built like a sherman tank! I have an aluminum flip cover for
it to protect the screen. I use it a dozen times or more during the day. So much
so that I've worn the silver coating off the side of it from pulling my inkpen/stylus
and PDA in and out of my pocket. I've only had to replace the backup battery
one time. I've keep up with every upgrade that dell has offered, and installed
PPC2003 without any troubles. I've only had to soft reset it a couple of times, usually when I've been screwing around (playing) with overclocking it or something
goofy like that.
It's a great PDA, I don't know about the X3i or the X30, but from the benchmarks
I've seen for the X30, the new Intel processor runs CPU a bit slower mhz for mhz
than the X5, but the graphics speed on the X30 blows the X5 away, which should
be interesting since the X5 isn't that shabby, plus if you increase your video cache
in the X5 you can really speed up the graphics a LOT.

Too bad they only offer half the resolution of some Palm devices.
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by icecaveman on 19 May 2004 - 14:31
Why compare to the Palm devices? You can get P/PC with 480x640 or some larger with even 600x800 plus you don't get lot of space wasted for a pad like is on Palm's

I'm trying to figure out why the 624 MHz version is priced at $349... It seems almost too low. A cousin to this one, the HP 4155 costs $449 - the one I was looking to buy until today. Can anyone explain how the better-spec'd Dell is a full $100 less?...
