How do you measure Bill Gates' success?

Forbes magazine puts a dollar figure on the Seattle, Washington-area native's net worth -- $46.6 billion in 2003 -- and crowned him the world's richest person for the seventh year in a row. His company, Microsoft, reports that it raked in $32.19 billion in revenues for the fiscal year ending in June 2003, ranking it among Fortune's top 50 largest U.S.-based corporations. And by donating $600 million a year and creating a charitable foundation with a $26 billion endowment, Gates is the world's largest private giver, according to The Washington Post.

His trademark glasses and restrained speech notwithstanding, most everything about Gates is big -- his business, wealth and philanthropy. He's a hero to some; a reviled monopolist to others. "I think we are a little bit like the Yankees in that we've got a good track record, and sometimes people get a kick out of saying if we don't win, 'Hey, that's fascinating, why didn't they win?'" Gates said in late March 2004 of Microsoft, according to the high-tech publication eWeek. The son of an attorney and a schoolteacher, Gates began computer programming in 1968, when he was 13. He entered Harvard in 1973, where he befriended future Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Gates developed a version of the BASIC computer language for the first microcomputer, the MITS Altair, during his stint at Harvard.

OK, so that is a lot of money but its about 0.001% by my calculations...

($600,000 / $46,600,000,000) * 100 = 0.0012875536480%

It's not $600,000 he is donating; it's $600,000,000 so you should shift that percentage a bit

($600,000,000 / $46,600,000,000 ) * 100 = 0.12875536480686695278969957081545%

so what, at least he give, that is what is important, better to give it straight to the people/charities than to the government through taxes and such.

You shifted the numerator by three decimal places, so your quotient is only shifted by two? Try 1.29%.

Just how difficult to understand is the above statement? Try 56% + 1.29%/year thereafter.

Is actually wrong - he did it in High School. He went to Harvard to become a lawyer =).

When was the last time you donated 6¢—or 6 minutes of your time, you mealy-mouthed little hippocrite? And since when did you become the final arbiter of what constitutes greatness?

You make me want to vomit, you little weasel.

Octol,

Cut back on the caffeine...

There is no excuse for your personal attack.
Plus, you have no information that any poster here does or does not donate time or money to charitable causes/organizations. A large percentage of people do donate, so odds are, you made a wrong assumption...

oh look, he gave $600 million to people, but still sits there with $46 billion (in worth at least). look, it's nice he gave $600m away, but why not make it a billion? because he stops getting tax breaks after $600m? what is the man ever going to need $46 billion for? when you die, you can't take it with you.

it may only be 600 million, but "at least he give, that is what is important, better to give it straight to the people/charities than to the government through taxes and such."

i read a while back, that he will give way more than half of his money away when he dies, so I guess the total will be much bigger than 46 billion by the time that he is done. look, this says something about this man, he is willing to work, at a job that he more than likely loves. that is his motivation, even though he has more money than anyone would ever need.

I am actually able to recieve some of these benefits through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, they have a program called the Washington Education Foundation that helps poor or needy families put their kids through college.

I would have to say I have a lot of respect for Bill Gates, he is a man who dreams and gets it done, he really does care about others, and no, he is not the greedy SOB you snobs put him out to be.

He worked his ass off for his money, he earned it, now shut up, work hard and you will get your reward someday...

As far as I know, there is a law in the states that REQUIRES companies as big as Microsoft to make a minimum donation to charity each year (approximately what he actually donates each year). He's not a nice guy, he's just obeying the law
Quote this comment #16.1 Posted by THX|PK| on 20 May 2004 - 03:04
He is donating from his personal wealth, not officially through microsoft.

Yes, and all these MS bashers are also forgetting the 27 billion endowment to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill is the worlds biggest philanthropist. He comes from a good and charitable family. He's a man of few excesses save for his home and he's not one to flaunt wealth in the way many others of means do. All this anti-Gates stuff is amazing to me. Don't you guys read. Go to the web site about the foundation and see what they are doing. Don't just scan a few lines of bold print. Dig in for 15 or 20 minutes and learn something.

I would like to quote an instance about Gates when he gave his keynote at Pan-IIT.
After his keynote, he was asked a question - "You already have earned a lot of money and now are the richest man on this planet. What is your dream now?"

(I do not remember the exact phrase of the question and his answer but in essence this is what he said).

And he replied: "I still dream of a pc that works very well". This shows his passion for his work.

lol i can see a Linus Torvalds interview going down like this:

Interviewer: What are your thoughts on Microsoft Windows?
LT: It's terrible, what MS is doing just isn't enough.

Interviewer: And what are you thoughts on sick children around the world who are in need for food, water, shelter, health and education?

LT: .........excuse me I would like to use the bathroom.

*goes to bathroom, jumps out the window, gets in car, go to airport and get on airplane*

Interviewer: hmm...I don't think he's coming back
