Microsoft Press has been defaced this evening by a group named "Outlaw Group". Although the group doesn't seem to have caused much damage, this is clearly an embarassment for Microsoft.com webmasters.

A clear example of where patches need to be applied.

The Benefits
-As a Related Community, your site or service will receive contextually relevant placement (a link and description) on the No. 1 corporate site and fourth largest Web site on the planet (according to Jupiter Media Metrics, 2003).

-You will have the opportunity to engage with a Microsoft Community Lead. A community lead is your personal, direct contact with Microsoft who can help you find answers to difficult questions, learn about upcoming events, and gain more insight into the product life cycle.

-You have the opportunity to include the Microsoft® Related Community logo on your community site or service.

-Your community site has the potential to be promoted to a Featured Community, receiving elevated exposure across Microsoft Web sites with your community site logo, link, and description. This is a great way to bring new traffic to your community site or service.

Provides a visible reciprocal link back to the contextually relevant Microsoft community site home page

* If at any time your site does not meet all of these requirements, it may be pulled from the program. Microsoft will not include links to sites with inappropriate language, nudity/sexual content, violence, gambling/drugs/alcohol, etc.

Well it sucks for Microsoft and is cool for Outlaw group, but damn... its so immature to use the net for things such as that, Like MSBlaster worm.... COMON its so sad... go take down child porn sites or something if you are going to do that... somthing that contributes to the over all better internet

Chill out, be Groovy,

#1.4 cracell~ on 24 May 2004 - 22:50
most spammers do it for profit (exactly how that works, don't ask me)

and as of outlaw group, u think they could've had a bit more fun then that, like if I was gonna do something like that I'd put an apology by microsoft for it's lack of security, and some of it's sucky products, and state that Windows Me, was just an evil joke

as for the child porn sites, rather then just take them down whoever is responible for the site should be shot, i've never looked into the subject, but the name sounds like anyone involved in it needs to be taken off the earth

creamhackered, you forgot to mention it was Microsoft Press UK and not Microsoft Press main site, both sites are hosted on different servers.
#7.1 dougkinzinger on 24 May 2004 - 19:53
I thought about reporting that too, but his point is correct: Anything helmed under the "microsoft.com" banner needs to be patched.
#8 srstakey on 24 May 2004 - 19:54
This is stupid, but remember that this is not the live page (as far as I understand). If you go up just one directory, you are redirected to a website that has the redesigned MS theme. I think it's a big security problem, even though it may not be part of the main site.

Who gives a crap? If you can't deal with bold text on a website, maybe you need to grow up.

#19 CubanPete on 24 May 2004 - 20:37
i tthink this could be a good thing, they havent caused too much damage and they've probably identified a new area that needs patching before some harm could be done.

#22.2 CheeseCow on 24 May 2004 - 21:31
Except that it is their job to get this right. So you double and triple check to be sure things are right. I miss the good old days where someone would get the chop for something like this.
#23 x2cube on 24 May 2004 - 20:59
Outlaw group... what an original name!!

I bet there is only one of em called that
(1 reply) #24 neufuse on 24 May 2004 - 21:15
how ironic... the day everyones complaining that neowin is now with MS in the community thing that neowin wouldnt post bad stuff about ms, this happens and gets posted... maybe that will help silence some people a little
#24.1 CheeseCow on 24 May 2004 - 21:29
there really was only one person, werejag or something with a zillion posts that all said nearly the same. But it is good that neowin still can post things like these.

Microsoft must feel most ashamed. If they are to sell me security they must first show me that they know what they are talking about. If they cannot protect their sites, because they are so many then close them down and start from scratch. ...and do it right this time.

Or perhaps this just shows that it isn't all that easy keeping up with all the latest patches and all....
#25 Surr3al on 24 May 2004 - 21:36
Am I supposed to be impressed?

If they were to deface MS's site they could have at least done a better job,

com on.. next time redirect to some linux's page.. or somthing.. maybe tag it with some fancy pictures.. make it play a cool midi sound.. like the one on realultimatepower ...

#30 no-sweat on 24 May 2004 - 23:11
do some people seriously have enough time on their hands to be in some cool "outlaw group"??? some people need to get out more. think of how much time that nerd spent trying to hack the site, and then he finally gets it and he puts "owned by outlaw group"... what a waste of a lifeform.
#31 shed2069 on 24 May 2004 - 23:39
Web page defacers are simply modern age grafitti artists, I always hated those pricks.

So smart/creative (well not in this case) but yet they are so stupid they cannot put their talent to good use.....
#32 STV on 25 May 2004 - 00:03
arent many websites cracked each day?

this was only posted because microsoft is a big name, plain and simple.

#35 Ev1lg0at on 25 May 2004 - 03:26
this can only be a good thing. nerds ners, lifeless nerds, whatever u want to call em - they are the people who push Microsoft and other companies to have a second, third, forth check on their system and make sure platforms are being built in a more secure way.

pricks pricks but they didnt harm anything clearly either wanting to gain some kind of """"""respect""""" (ahem right...) or try and get microsoft more worried about their security.

Either way, personally i think it can only be a good thing. From now on, i can bet that hacking a microsoft-related website is going to be much harder than it was before.

Microsoft should thing more about security, I personally hope Longhorn has much tighter security.
#41 cracell~ on 25 May 2004 - 15:06
microsoft doesn't care about security it cares about money, lol

which to make money it does have to have a certain amount of security, but not as much as it should

longhorn will

B. Suck
C. Be like Xp suck on release be decent after 2 years of patches and 2 sp's
