- That's the problem when they announce the release date.. When they slip, they all work extra hard.. so instead of working extra hard all the sudden, they might as well not to disclose it and work the way steadily and push things out to public as it is ready
-
#3.1 Posted by incubusdaemon on 31 May 2004 - 15:29
- unless you mean that they don't do as well when they work hard, that sounds like an advantage not a disadvantage.
-
#3.2 Posted by ThunderRiver on 31 May 2004 - 22:49
- no one do things well when they rush. what's your point?

- Cant wait either - I didnt realise how much i right click > properties on an image!

-Raz -
#4.4 Posted by Razor_D on 31 May 2004 - 16:38
- Theres a bug in the latest build for us testers, which means in internet explorer, you cant right click and choose properties on an image, it causes IE to crash - which is bloody annoying...
-
#4.5 Posted by Jugalator on 31 May 2004 - 18:51
- I wonder why there isn't a "Copy shortcut" menu item for images in IE?
If it weren't we wouldn't need to go into the properties anyway, since the thing you usually want in there is the URL. -

- Firefox can't read PHP site correctly. It places everything to the left of every column!
-
#4.8 Posted by weenur on 01 Jun 2004 - 02:09
- That wouldn't be correct. PHP is server based, so the coder of the site didn't write his HTML out correctly. Neowin is PHP, no?

QUOTE (#4.6) Then use Firefox.
why use firefox when this is just a temporary bug that will be fixed?

- This bug is confirmed by me to be fixed in build 2135.

QUOTE (#4.7) Firefox can't read PHP site correctly. It places everything to the left of every column!
No, that's not true. I'm currently using PHP myself, and Firefox renders it perfectly. Maybe it's because my site is W3C compliant. You see, that's the problem with IE. Firefox renders everything according to standards. But no, Microsoft has to make their own standards, they're too smart to follow W3C's recommendation. And that defeats the purpose of having a standard in the first place. That's why every decent website coder/webmaster keeps b*tching about IE, because it keeps rendering things differently. Until MS fixes their d*mn browser, I'll keep using Firefox, and so will millions of others.

#4.12 Posted by YaddaMe on 01 Jun 2004 - 13:23
QUOTE Firefox can't read PHP site correctly.
Ditto the other comments. Web browsers are client-side & everything-PHP is handled on the server side. Browsers never even see php, so they couldn't really mis-interpret php then could it.
QUOTE No, that's not true. I'm currently using PHP myself, and Firefox renders it perfectly.
Technically, your comment isn't true either, as browsers never even see PHP, so there's nothing to "render".
PHP & web-browsers have virtually nothing to do with each other.

- ultimately, wouldn't we rather have them take their time and get it right rather than rush it?
-

- I agree! All their hard work is definately going to pay off.

#8 Posted by MuD on 31 May 2004 - 15:24
- Yeah, I really can't wait much longer either. But like I said on a previous post, they better take their time and do it right, than rush it and make a million patches afterwards. Although I still think even Microsoft underestimated this project. In any case, is it possible we can expect a speed boost? I know that's not the focus on SP2, but still, it would be nice to have Windows be a bit lighter on system resources. I'm still running build 2096, but I don't see any improvement in speed.
-
#8.1 Posted by Betaz on 31 May 2004 - 15:30
- It's always possible, but it's highly doubtful. Considering they are adding the security center, which is another service running, strengthing the firewall which means it will actually do something now, etc. It's probably just going to be adding more things running. But yes, there is always the chance they will tweak something and make it a little faster.
-
#8.2 Posted by N1CK on 31 May 2004 - 16:29
- The compiler used for SP2 optimises more heavily than the compiler used for SP1, so it is possible.

- I hate to hear that they have pushed the release date back for RC2, but it's better they get it right the first time then have another load of patches for the service later on. At least, that's the way I look at it
-
#10 Posted by kiddingguy on 31 May 2004 - 15:33
- mid-July as estimate for the final. I would say end-July
. But it's a good thing MS does a lot of extra/additional testing of this major-SP for XP and even release a RC2.
Can't wait for the final!
-
#11 Posted by StOrM on 31 May 2004 - 15:49
- I cant wait for the final. but i will be happy with the rc2 for now
-
#12 Posted by altezza on 31 May 2004 - 16:14
- Gotta wait until final release...shouldn't be too far off from now

-
#13 Posted by KevinRGood on 31 May 2004 - 16:33
- You know as soon as they release WinXP SP2 for the internal testers there'll be yet another security problem or bug. This is endless. Eventhough they work overtime for this service pack, they probably won't release the final version until late August. But, that's OK. As long as they get it RIGHT this time.

QUOTE

sp2 is the collection of bug fixes from after sp1. so i hope there wont be a sp3 becuase they got it right and trustworthy computing will finally mean something. -
#14.2 Posted by Sawyer12 on 31 May 2004 - 19:49
- Im guessing there will be an SP3 . . . theres still a lot of unpatched bugs to find and fix
-
#14.3 Posted by gawdflesh on 31 May 2004 - 20:32
- Man, I wish Linus Torvalds and all those kernel developers would just get it right and quit releasing all those massive kernel releases. Why can't they just do something right the first time?
-
#14.4 Posted by STV on 31 May 2004 - 20:39
- remember sp2 isnt just a "package of bugfixes". it much more and that is probably why microsoft is gonna make it avaliable for free on as many channels as possible.
STV -
#14.6 Posted by STV on 01 Jun 2004 - 05:52
- well werejag, why is that funny? you always seem to be putting microsoft and windows down for some reason or other. but i bet that you probably do use windows, but i am not sure about that.
but i think that gawdflesh said it right. also remember Mac OS before OS X. they had to use a BSD variant for the new OS. Apple didnt do it right the first time either.
do you ever have any useful opinions or comments to contribute werejag?

IMHO, all you can do is report it and boot up the system without the pre-release service pack.

Then don't go near ANY thread on Neowin. Better yet, find another website to post your crap.

-
#21 Posted by ben_b on 31 May 2004 - 22:06

- I really hope they've delayed SP2 till September at the earliest. MS might finally be listening to many of thier channels and their partners. I mentioned previously on the boards that October/November would be a great time to release SP2 once they've been able to spend considerable time testing the service pack. From what I'm hearing now, essentially the delay allows retail marketing channels to be better geared up for installing SP2 on all new systems. Additionally they've been able to re-architect their testing protocols to allow for more configurations.
More over, 3rd party antivirus vendors and firewall products are getting significant rework and additionally prompting(and strong arming) from Microsoft to get thier lousy non compliment apps to work for SP2. I really think that the 2005 versions of these 3rd party apps will bring SP2 complence. Microsoft can't make them do it, and the Antitrust lawyers won't let microsoft release their own virus scanners, so in the end it sucks for consumers.

I am so sick and tired of message boards being crammed with the "latest update on how late the update is".....
It's nothing more then security updates, and a retarded, bothersome firewall addition.
When it's out.....it's out. 77 comments on this old subject, I take it we have nothing else to do? -

- They have to have release dates or nothing would ever get done. A lot of people are slackers and you tell them one day we will release LongHorn people take their time and not really care. Plus customers should have some idea what they can expect down the road.
Instead of walking in Bestbuy and saying: Damn when was Lognhorn release. That was 6 months ago no one told you.

2138 (xpsp.040522-1636)
2139 (xpsp.040524-1730)
2140 (xpsp.040525-1946)
2141 (xpsp.040526-1840)
2142 (xpsp.040528-0019)
We're hoping to see RC2 get compiled this week with a release on or after the 7th June, if RC2 gets compiled early this week then beta testers may well see the long awaited update at the end of the week. Either way there's a lot of testing to be done to ensure that any problems with RC2 are reported and that all is well for the release to manufacturing (RTM) in mid-July.
