Today Sony announced that it will no longer develop and sell Clie handheld models to the United States market, at least for the foreseeable future. However, it also stated that it remains strongly committed to wireless mobile devices, including cellphones and communicators manufactured under both the Sony and Sony Ericsson brands and its PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming device.

While Sony claims that it is simply reassessing the conventional PDA market and will continue to manufacture Clie models for the Japanese market, several industry insiders had recently predicted attrition among the ranks of the handheld manufacturers, primarily due to flat overall sales in handhelds for the past two years. According to Dave Limp, Senior VP of Corporate and Businesss Development at PalmSource, Sony's decision came as no surprise. "While we are disappointed to see Sony exit the space," Mr. Limp said. "We respect its decision and hope to continue to work together in the future."

Mr. Limp told Brighthand that this simply continues the trend toward consolidation of marketshare in the traditional PDA business to two major players, HP in the Pocket PC arena and palmOne in the Palm OS arena. "The market is in transition from a standalone PDA market to a wireless communicator market," said Mr. Limp. When asked whether Sony would be releasing a Palm OS-based communicator in the future, Mr. Limp said "there are no guarantees in this world."

That sucks. They have a really nice style. I have the UX-50 and the new TH-55 and I love them both.

Not too bad at all.. we don't miss ya Sony. My friend's Clie is soo easy to break, and I don't think it is a good device at all.

I think they are doing right. The PDA market is going nowhere, and cellphones are advancing on this market. Who want's a PDA when your cellphone do the same type of things?

I do want

I love my Palm Tungsten T3 and I am not going to get a two-in-one Cell Phone + PDA anytime in the future.

I would be lost if I only had my mobile phone to organise my life! My H4150 runs my life that if I ever lost it I probably wouldn't be able to do my job!

Also I prefer having 2 devices. I like my mobile to call people and I like my PDA to organise everything. I wouldn't want an all in one device, at least not at the moment. However I will admit the XDA2 looks like it might be what I want but it needs built in WiFi.

As for Sony leaving the market I guessed this would happen sooner or later. It is a shame but probably for the best. I wondered what HP and PalmOne will do now?

Yeah, I still remember my first CLIE, it was so slick.

This s a sad day for the handheld market. So long CLIE you will be missed.

Sony was certainly an innovator in the PDA market. They brought us HiRes (320 x 320), HiRes+ (320 x 480), MP3 and other multimedia capabilities and more.
