The crew over at The Tech Report has discovered BTX may not work on AMDs Athlon 64 processors.

I've spoken with several sources here on the show floor from motherboard and enclosure makers who have all said the same thing: the BTX form factor is a non-starter on AMD systems. The problem seems to be the relative CPU and DIMM placement; the standard requires placement of DIMM sockets too far from the processor. With the Athlon 64's integrated memory controller, following the BTX spec becomes very difficult. Of course, BTX is Intel's spec, but it is also a proposed industry standard. Motherboard and enclosure makers are worrying out loud about the inventory control and design problems that may be caused by the extended coexistence of the ATX and BTX standards.

Hmm Intel is trying to take down AMD...... what a year for everyone....

Sounds like this either isn't going to become a standard, or intel will be accused of being a bunch of assholes for trying to kill AMD with their supposed new "standard". I guess they could always simply fix the problem and move the memory a bit closer.

I wonder what btx stands for...

    AT - Advanced Technology
    ATX - Advanced Technology eXtended
    BTX - Balanced Technology eXtended

Gee... I'm sure that slipped Intel's mind someplace. I really don't think they intended to put AMD out of business. (/sarcasm)

I knew the new standard was bad from the start. I think intel was sour from the whole 64bit thing, and being forced to adopt amds instruction set or loose windows, so they decided to make up there own new indrustry standard because there prescots run too hot. Intel isnt looking too with it this year, alderwood better be damn good. They coulnt decied weither they were going to make a 64 bit chip, prescots are slower and run hotter, and terminated there entire roadmap.

I use AMD exclusively, but I am not sure this is entirely Intel's fault. The BTX form factor did not just appear yestrday, they have been working on it for some time. Unless Intel kept the designs secret, AMD had chances to view them and work with their partners to ensure compatibility. I'm sure this will be worked out seeing as the designs are not yet finalized and I have yet to see a board for this form factor.

the AMD actually issued an official statement saying they see no reason for BTX to exist, and would never support it, why is this a surprise/news to anyone?

BTX is a waste of time and money for AMD, ATX still works fine for AMD.

    Why fix what isn't broke.

Intel's trying to fix their broken revenue stream by making BTX an Intel-only "standard".

They know AMD is ahead in the race (and their CPUs don't run as hot). This year we haven't seen anything revolutionary from Intel. They are megahertz whores, they do anything to raise clock frequency (even if that means sacrificing IPC). Of course, this is a marketing ploy for consumers who should know better!

Normally I would reply with a decent retort to such a dumb post but I am so tired I dont have the energy to lay it all out in english for you. Although it will be jacked up if you have to buy a whole new case and psu just to use and Intel. Or if you go AMD after that the same will apply.
