WARNING: dont use with corp versions of winXP, it will ask to re-activate ,how can you activate Corp? There is no activation in corp. I have had this before installing SP2 beta on an official corp PC wants it to activate after install, which is impossible, so that windows PC is screwed. Uninstall sp2 via recovery console.
Same here. I downloaded the previous release and many internet links to media stopped working. Instead of an AVI or other movie file opening up in my default media player which happens to be Windows Media Player it would open up a page with large amounts of random characters.

PS I can't wait for WMP 10! I hope they improved on the response time for large Media Libraries.

The problem with opening up a wmv url and getting text instead of playback is a known issue that can be easily fixed by going into your Internet Options, Security, Internet Zone, Custom, then scroll down till you see "open files on content, not file extension" and check it to enabled.

Now that the download link is there you can download directly. You do not need to be on sp1 to install. Ive just slipstreamed this download wit my xp copy(non sp-1) and am installing it on virtual pc. Will see how it gets on.

pretty interesting. why would microsoft offer not finished products for installing. it says it's even recommended

Keep in mind the site itself isn't even final yet, and Microsoft doesn't intend for the average user to use WUv5 just yet... They're probably testing it to make sure it shows up for SP1 and RTM users, but not for SP2 users, which is why no one with SP2 can see it...

    Use some logic people

Maybe they have it totally finished and thats it released, and were just playing with all us

Well i can't be sure but i would say that this is almost certaintly not rc2. As this build was created on the 22nd May, and there have been atleast 4 builds since, possibly 5. I would expect RC2 to be about 2143-2145, so if this is RC2 i would be surprised.

I slipstreamed this build with my xp disk, and installed it onto my pc, and it is running fine however i see no changes or improvements over build 2135. Also, the file sizes of 2135 and 2138 are very very similar indeed, coming down to several kb difference, meaning not much has changed. It will be interesting to see if this was intended or another ms blunder, but never the less i would doubt if this is RC2 as we arent expected to see it sometime between the 7th-9th June at the earliest, i would expect it to be released on Monday to be honest.

I've never tried beta SPs before (though I really wanna give this one a shot), so bear with me if my question sounds a bit "n00bish"

After installing this build of SP2 RC1, will it be possible to install subsequent builds over this version in the future ?
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #24 Posted by Ely on 02 Jun 2004 - 19:49
Yes , you will be able to install later builds in the future, however you will need to UNISTALL the older/current build first before being able to install your newer build.

dms350, weird I have installed this build and everything looks so stable no a single error at all. I also installed Windows Media Player 10 it 's awesome too.

Make sure you unistall any previous builds of SP2 before attempting to install this build and make sure you have a legitimate version of Windows.

When I installed it it wouldn't let me turn on automatic update and after about a minute it would tell me it was going to restart due to NT/AUTHORIZATION not starting up properly and kept doing that so I had to restore my system and now back to a stable system. I did uninstall the previous sp2. Just incase I try again is there a theme patch out?

I had SP1 before attempting to install this beta SP2, and yes my copy is legit. I just fresh installed it a couple months ago too. It started by totally screwing WindowBlinds, for one thing, which I had to uninstall. Then I discovered it had removed the "Connect to" choice from my Start menu. Attempts to open those connections through other means, i.e. right-clicking on My Network Places, Network Control Panel, View Network Connections, etc. do NOTHING, so I can't dial out or connect to anything from it. I try to open Phone and Modem control panel and I get "Phone and Modem options control panel can not be opened. You may have a problem starting telephony service." System restore says "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again." Rebooting of course does nothing. Uninstall gets as far as "Restoring Catalogs" then aborts with "The system cannot find the file specified, service pack 2 was not uninstalled."

The more stuff I try to use the more stuff I find that's broken.

Unable to uninstall SP2 - "The system cannot find the file specified (restoring catalogs)". My system is basically useless. I have internet, but can not access my adapters. Most of my services do not work. My OS is legit. All of my Office XP stuff opens with errors. Although I can see my mapped drives on my network, I can not transfer files between them. The Administrator logon does not work. It accepts the password, then reloads the login screen. Any ideas out there?

2138 is NOT a public beta. It was not intended to be released on WindowsUpdate and has since been removed.
