Microsoft has released build 2142 (the latest build internally) to external beta testers at it's Windows Beta Web site. This build is not Release Candidate 2 but Microsoft have released this interim update alongside 2138 to testers which will proove not only confusing but troublesome for testers wanting to provide feedback on Windows XP SP2.

With a release of an interim merely days before the expected RC2 release this only spells bad news for a possible delay of RC2...again.

As we posted before the build string is 2142 (xpsp.040528-0019).

More news soon.

Thanks, Its ashame Microsoft don't email you to let you know they must be under quite a bit of stress as they keep having to postpone releases.
    #3.1 jameseuk on 02 Jun 2004 - 18:26
they do email Official Beta testers, just not always instantly
    #3.2 NeoTech on 02 Jun 2004 - 19:23
It's usually about 1-3 days late for me. I usually get it after 2 days. Never gotten it past 3.
    #3.3 McGazza on 03 Jun 2004 - 14:17

    #4 Sim31 on 02 Jun 2004 - 17:48
Yall have it, I sure do on my downloads, im guessing he means external testers as in all the beta testers of xp sp2.
    #5 scyphe on 02 Jun 2004 - 17:52
MS isn't postponing anything really, they keep working on it and released a build today. The only reason for it not being RC2 is that the testlabs didn't find it 110% complete, worthy of RC2. I'm just glad they keep working on it instead of rushing it out too keep some deadline, releasing megabugged stuff (like in the past).

ps. build 2138 was a separate release by the v4.windowsupdate-team to test the distribution of a service pack. It's not released to the official betatesters, thus, it poses no problem. For those that downloaded it today and installed it, they'll have to bite their foot and uninstall it and do it all over again..

Who cares? It's a freaking SP.

Want a download manager and popup blocking? Have this since 3 years now with Mozilla (and you get tabbed browsing for free). Firewall? Get a stand alone app. Bugfixes? They're available via Windowsupdate!

There is far more than this in the Service Pack, try reading this :

not all bug fixes are on windows update
    #6.3 mram on 02 Jun 2004 - 19:03
Service packs are a reworking of the original code base, complete with regression testing and application compatibility certification.

The only things one would see on Windows Update are critical hotfixes, or recommended updates that fall beyond a normal "bug" category. For example, an easily redistributable program might show up on Windows Update (directx, windows media) but you won't find patches to fix rare problems that do exist for some people.

If you're not having problems, then service packs really aren't necessary. However, even if you're having occasional issues with anything, the chances are extremely likely that a fix for it may exist in a service pack as opposed to seeing it on Windows Update.

So, in a nutshell: You're not just wrong, you're way wrong.

I'm waiting for my new computer to come in. It's ordered. Maybe by that time RC2 will be released.

I don't see the point in just getting it installed and downloaded right when I get my new one lol, be just my luck it'd come in that day.

A little birdie tells me that DIVX files won't play on this build. At all.

And if you open an explorer window to a directory that has DIVX files in it, it'll crash. Same goes for IE.

Makes you wonder what they're doing to DIVX. :|
    #16.1 EvErSoR on 02 Jun 2004 - 19:46
hm. i'll try this build anyway. im kinda bored and i didn't have the oppurtunity yet to test out nLite
    #16.2 SiXXGuNNZ on 02 Jun 2004 - 21:26
yeah, they didn't work on 2135 either, anybody confirm they do not work on 2142? I am using 2138 right now and they do not work here also

just tried an vxid also, it does not work on 2138 either

maybe they just do not want us using mpeg4 anymore
    (1 reply) #17 tom5 on 02 Jun 2004 - 19:45
They gave two versions to the testers? ROTFL
    #17.1 cheesegoduk on 02 Jun 2004 - 21:27
    Yeah I don't understand that either :s
    #18 johnston on 02 Jun 2004 - 21:31
Has anyone been able to slipstream this build 2142, i tried and failed. If anyone can i will try again tomorrow, but tried twice and failed.
    #19 tekwar2000 on 02 Jun 2004 - 21:48
    German Version of 2142 on warp2search.net , :-)
    #20 SiXXGuNNZ on 02 Jun 2004 - 22:12
the work around for the divx thing is simple, uninstall divx until they fix the decoder and just use the xvid decoder or ffdshow to play your mpeg4 streams for now

    #22.2 jameseuk on 03 Jun 2004 - 17:30
how did you get it to work?,I've tried many times and the installation starts fine then brings up WMP9 setup
    #22.3 harleydog on 03 Jun 2004 - 20:07
Works fine for me also. I installed the 2142 build, then installed WMP10.
    No issues at all.
    #23 Randall_Lind on 03 Jun 2004 - 02:40
I am confuse if RC1 is open to the public then all other beta's should be also. I never heard of rc1 then secert beta copies to other beta testers.
