Microsoft has successfully patented the “to-do list”. This patent comes quickly after last weeks patent given to Microsoft for double clicks in handhelds. One has to wonder what plans Microsoft has for these new patents and what possible patents Microsoft will be granted.

Better not get too fancy with your grocery list, now that Microsoft has patented a glorified form of the to-do list.

U.S. Patent No. 6,748,582, granted and assigned Tuesday to Microsoft, covers use of a "task list" in a software development environment. The patented technology essentially integrates certain comments left in the source code of an application under development with an accompanying checklist. Leave a "TODO" comment in the source code, and an authoring application automatically creates an item in the task list. Check an item off on the task list, and the corresponding source code comment is changed. A Microsoft representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. While the new patent is specific enough to software development that vacationers penning "what to pack" lists don't have to worry, it fits with Microsoft's ongoing efforts to enlarge its patent portfolio.

Cool. Go MS GO!

All these patents are what you get for the frivolous lawsuits dying software companies and the EU keep filing. For years, MS hasn't really cared how people used their software but now they do... Ever since the antitrust case. Now every time someone wants to add functionality to their product (in theory this includes the double-click, FAT file system and now to-do lists) they could have to pay MS which will help them to settle the legalistic feeding frenzy that's been going on.

patent portfolio? LOL sounds more like an "abuse of power checklist" to me... wonder what the hell is next? right click? the start button? patent department needs to stop opening their asses up to Bill Gates. This is getting so stupid...

I'm saying this again: Microsoft is just trying to make sure a little, unknow and stupid company doesn't register a patent like this one and sue them for billions.

why the hell would anyone want to patent this **** in the first place!? this stuff shouldn't be able to be patented anyways.

And we're supposed to trust the benevolence of Microsoft because... ?

dandin1, you're right. I'm sure they'll be donating that patent to the public domain in no time

Heh youre wrong.
Look, what would you do if you where a big company and paid several millions for patents to other companys that just patented things like activex etc?
Well, get that patent before another does, and then simply dont do anything with it.
They just wanted it to protect themselve...

That is the stupidest thing I've seen anybody say in a long time. You know that's nowhere near true.

Anyway, if people would ****ing read they would know what the patent is about and therefore maybe they wouldn't be posting uniformed and stupid comments. Apple patents everything too so why can't Microsoft?

I had to read the article and the patient a few times to properly understand what was going on here.

My first reaction was "OH MY GOD! I CANT BELIEVE THIS!" but after I calmed down and read the actual article a few times, its clear that the author should never be allowewd to write another article again, for feeding us such garbage.

In no way does this mean a standard to-do list, you are not going to be sued the next time you check what you need to buy from the shops.

The patient covers a software program which can be used during the development of an application, it allows you to make comments, and tasks in the code, which this program will pick up on and display in a real time interactive list. When another user modifies that list it notifies everybody involved with the project.

I still think that they shouldn't have been allowed to do this, because anyone with half a brain could have thought up a similar invention, although I have got to hand it to MS, they see where computing is going and they have no problem with capitalising on the direction which things are heading. Stuff like this will become more common in the future, and now MS will be there ready to collect royalties.

Absolutely amazing. This feature has been in various Borland/Inprise development packages for years. Long before the 2000 filing date of the patent.

1. A computer-implemented method for managing development-related tasks, the method comprising:

during an interactive code development session, evaluating source code to determine whether a comment token is present;

---------------
how is that even closely related to a grocery list, unless thats a development environment ^_^. They are a little bit too specific to take over the world with this one guys ;P

I am throuwn out of my chair about how insane that patent (and the double-clic one) is!! I mean, I know it is not a grocery task list, but still!!! Once enforced, that can limit a whole lot of other developers!! Like that invented the concept!! Patents will soon have to be reconsidered or else it won't stop!!
Or maybe I've read too many Si-Fi books as a teen LOL
