TiVo is developing new services to allow movies and music to be downloaded to its digital video recorders, but in the meantime the company is cutting prices for its current services to boost subscriptions to its standalone recorders. The San Jose, Calif.-based company is expected to announce on Wednesday at a New York event price cuts for services used with its Series2 standalone digital video recorders (DVRs). TiVo's networking software--a $99 option called Home Media Option--will become part of its standard service offering for both monthly and lifetime subscribers.

The company will also offer those with multiple TiVo boxes a price cut for additional recorders. The monthly subscription rate for the first recorder will remain $12.95, but additional recorders will cost $6.95. Lifetime subscriptions will remain $299. TiVo said no changes are planned for the price or features offered with DirecTV TiVo boxes.

Neowin would like to add that [we hope] this is in no way representative of other tory candidates.

hey at least you can still get Tivo's. Us in the UK have to find alternatives or get satellite (Sky+).

I wish I would have bought the lifetime. I have been paying monthly charges since the original was released. I figured I'd be upgrading to a new one within that time. But, they still haven't released any cable HDTV Tivos yet.

Where do you live? The cable companies are offering HDTV tivo-like devices and there are some on the market as well. I just cannot afford a stand-alone HDTV Tivo device at the price they are rolling them out.

That's why the "cool kids" have a DirecTV/TiVo combo unit. The monthly fee is only $4.99, and it covers every unit in your house!
(Of course, the Home Media option is currently not available to us)

The main reason why the price is only $4.95 is because DirecTV handles all the back end. TiVo needs to find more partners like that, and offer similar prices.

About time Tivo woke up and noticed everyone is kickin their as$es around. Be competitive or get out of business! ReplayTV is rockin their boat here in the midwest, and all the local cable providers are offering their own HDTV Tivo-like device (might be tivo but doesn't look like it). Wake up and smell the competition Tivo!
