The GUI Olympics is almost over. The upcoming week is the last week where the big 3 events get finished up.

The last judged event, best visual style (using WindowBlinds) is now up. Over 100 visual styles were created for this event and the finalists are now available to be looked at.

Check out this article that goes over the finalists and why they are finalists. The event will be judged early this upcoming week.

(moderator hat on regarding comments)
These are the visual styles that judges representing multiple websites in the skinning community along with thousands of users also like. If you personally don't like them, that's your choice.

But please show some respect to the skin authors who put in a lot of time into creating skins that you are able to freely use.

..right. I'm sure you took the time to download each of them and try them out in the 6 minutes between the news item coming up and you making your comment.

Yes and in 6 minutes he went through all of them, made a decision, came back here to announce that they're all "crap".

Because Neowin is a sponsor and one of the judges in the GUI Olympics.

I don't think it has anything to do with SD.

It's more a problem of pampered man-children who can't restrict their own infantile urges to crap on the hard work of other people. One too many wedgies and they feel they gotta take out their angst on the world.

It seems to me that the people who benefit the most from free skins are the users, not the companies who make the software. The skins are kind of useless without the software are they not?

Incidentally, the top visual styles in just THIS event get about $1,000 in cash, a Radeon XT, an ATI All in Wonder 9800 Pro, a bunch of software, etc. and of course they all get free copies of WindowBlinds, SkinStudio, etc.

Let me know if you ever see an msstyle contest that has prizes of this magnitude.

(just to name 3 that are on there).

So would you then be surprised that there are many requests for these to be turned into msstyles asap right?

"almost there"? WB skins vastly more than msstyles do. And msstyles can only skin apps that are explicitly theme aware. But that's for another topic.

Calling people's work "crap" isn't feedback. It's just disrespectful.

All of the screenshots show the display properties window -- fully skinned.

There already was a best minimalistic visual style event.

You can check out the full results here:
Best Minimalistic visual style event

Some people around here need to realize that many, if not most people out there who are into skinning want to change their Windows GUI in a pretty significant way. They're not looking for something that's like classic but tweaked to be a bit flashier. There were something like a dozen visual style events that covered all kinds of area.

WinCustomize, Skinz.org, deviantART, Customize.org, Skinbase.org, etc. WinCustomize.com gets over 2 million unique monthly visitors.

Also, look at the most popular Winamp skins, they're not minimalistic either. They tend to be very feature-heavy. My own tastes on skins change depending on what I am doing. Sometimes it's minimalistic, sometimes I want something that looks really cool and different.
