Yahoo to launch 100MB free e-mail

Yahoo on Tuesday will begin offering 100MB of extra storage for users of its free e-mail service as part of an overall redesign of its mail service. Along with the 100MB boost, Yahoo will upgrade Mail Plus paid users to 2GB of storage and lower its yearly subscription from $29.99 a year to $19.99. Other a la carte services, such as POP e-mail forwarding, will consolidate under this plan and no longer be sold on a standalone basis.

The storage boost comes as no surprise. Yahoo arch-rival Google in April announced plans to launch a free e-mail service called "Gmail" with 1GB of storage. The upcoming launch of Gmail has changed the landscape for free-e-mail users, but also raised privacy concerns because of Google's decision to serve advertisements based on scanning the content of e-mail text. Yahoo executives last month announced the company would offer its own storage upgrade as part of overall changes to the service.

This sort of thing is not uncommon among Internet and computer users. Microsoft vs Apple, Intel vs AMD. It seems us geeks just can’t help ourselves.

We must remember that both offer “free” services and unbelievable amounts of storage. So what’s at the centre of this storm and why would users of a email service turn to this action? I would hazard a guess “commercialisation”. GMail members are selling & trading invites to what is a free service.

This spawned a new craze, were everyone wants the best email address they can buy, usually their first name, popular companies and even pop stars names. True hysteria built on hype has caused email accounts to become valuable and any rival offering a better service and this is a threat to them.

So when your saving for your pension don’t forget to add a few choice GMail accounts to go along with those 1000’s of catchy domain names your sitting on too…

Update: well it seems that the GMail group won, You’ve Got Post accounts now have a 20mb limit, returning them to the hords of companies offering a similer service. GMail it seams, has kept its crown for now...

I like the "no interruption of your service" part...I haven't been able to access my email at all today...
(1 reply) #4 tiagosilva29 on 15 Jun 2004 - 09:57
wow, incredible...

It's, like, the first time in a year and so that I access my Yahoo account.

I wonder if Hotmail is going to get pumped up too...

Thank you, Google!

In a sense why bother??
The ISP's MS and AOl etc all bitch over the amount of spam that forces them to purchase more bandiwth and storage. it said that 90 % or so (pepending on who you listen to) of the mail is spam.
So using this scenerio why offer such huge ammounts of drive space for email anyhow?
As a pay serivice sure I could understand this fully, but how much mail does the average user get of legit non-spam non-business mail anyhow?
KInda sounds like telling the spammers hey look at all the space we have for you to fill up.
It just seems with less spam running around as a whole that we would all benifit as end users with the billions of spam mailings eating up bandwidth on the internet freeways
Though it seems that 100 MB does seem sensible as say a Gig of storage

My useless 2 cents worth

With the new Bayesian filters yahoo is incorporating, spam should drastically reduce.
#5.2 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:38
Yep, that's the plan

Heh...I just got my 100MB too.
But I dun like the new layout and design.
#6.1 Galley on 15 Jun 2004 - 14:23
Yeah, you need a magnifying glass to read the tiny text.
#6.2 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:25
I get free Pop3 access (.co.uk) so I don't have to deal with the new interface
(1 reply) #7 f0rbez on 15 Jun 2004 - 10:51
i want mine

oh by the way, are there upgrades to the other features like the briefcase and whatnot?
#7.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:26
Good point, I haven't checked those yet
(1 reply) #8 ramesees on 15 Jun 2004 - 10:54
I assume that all Yahoo! email users will get this 100Mb upgrade? If so when will they all have filtered through by?

I've got a 6Mb account at the moment, and its a .co.uk one....so fingers crossed

<edit> Got my upgrade now....100Mb of email Sweet</edit>

#10 anakinsolois on 15 Jun 2004 - 11:11
Hmm, today afternoon (Indian time) i was having a few probs accessing the account, but a couple of hours later it worked fine. I think the entire process may take as much as 24-48 hours.

Briefcase hasnt been upgraded, no hint about future upgrades
(1 reply) #11 f0rbez on 15 Jun 2004 - 11:11

Wow, no ads in Mail Plus, 2 GB of storage ...very cool indeed
#12.1 andi_kam on 15 Jun 2004 - 17:54
worth noting it says no graphical advertisements shows the are concidering text advertisements similar to google. Though these are far less invasive I believe.
#12.2 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:28
I find text ads better too. Less destracting... none of the flashing animation or stupid sounds (in flash based ones at least)
(1 reply) #13 DOGglee on 15 Jun 2004 - 11:41

#14.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:29
Yeah it was slow at first but once all the processing of everyone's accounts was out of the way then everything returned to normal
(1 reply) #15 Mr. PC Doctor on 15 Jun 2004 - 12:13
It does take a while for them to upgrade it for you
#15.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:30
Indeed, with the number of people around the WORLD that have yahoo mail means it's not gonna be an instant process for everyone

#17.3 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:32
It would be nice

(but I get pop3 access for free anyway so it is slightly redundant - apart from receiving a total of 100Mb in attachments across 10 emails - attachment size is limit is still just as small as before so split zips/rars will be required)
(1 reply) #18 Spike101M69 on 15 Jun 2004 - 15:19
damn! i just got all excited on Gmail and was about to switch over everything to my gmail account..and then i read this, got excited about the extra 1gb. tried to login, and apparently on my SBC Yahoo! account, only my dad gets the 2GB..... the subaccounts only get 100MB.
#18.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:32
100mb is still better than the old 6mb
(1 reply) #19 chacho on 15 Jun 2004 - 15:57
can google make the world any better??
#19.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:33
they're doing a pretty good job now
(1 reply) #20 leojei on 15 Jun 2004 - 16:06
thanks for the news. I just checked my old Yahoo! Mail account and REALLY GOOD, 100MB..... I used only 5% of it (I had 6MB of storage).

It seems Yahoo! Mail is slower than before...... it takes somtime to loads up pages... Hope they can get the speed up a little too...
#20.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:33
It should be nice and fast by now since all the upgrades across the world should be complete
(2 replies) #21 ramik on 15 Jun 2004 - 16:11
all my email since more than 5 years doesn't arrive (outlook express folder backups) 100 MB... i will never need more space...
#21.1 ec4912 on 15 Jun 2004 - 18:11
Over time you might. All my e-mails in the past 7 years is about 350 MB.
#21.2 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:34
I've never really kept a track of how much space my email across a period of years takes up. I usually delete stuff older than approx 2 months anyway, unless it's still important in the future of course
(1 reply) #22 l77Il7H on 15 Jun 2004 - 16:12
something is wrong my yahoo account. it's very slow, the scheme looks messed up and i can't access any of my mail.
#22.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:35
Should be fast now, all upgrades being complete and all
#23 Intelman on 15 Jun 2004 - 17:20
Yeah, I bet the servers are hammered cause everyone is like "OMG 100MB of mail!!!" Or the new system has a few bugs. Anywho, I've expirenced the same problem. But have also seen the 100MB of storage and the new theme... It looks neat, and the 1% used out of 100MB is neat to see too . Now to decide if I should use gmail or yahoo...descians descians!
(1 reply) #24 andi_kam on 15 Jun 2004 - 17:46
Before deleting my hotmail account im going to wait around and see what changes they make.

lol at the "hotmail will be releasing their 3mb upgrade" that was my first thought too.
#24.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:36
Lol yeah that was funny
(1 reply) #25 deftools on 15 Jun 2004 - 18:20

#25.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:36
250Mb by the end of the year
(1 reply) #26 tronmaster on 15 Jun 2004 - 18:31
I checked my paid Yahoo email and I got 2.0 Gigabytes!!

I'm a happy camper.
#26.1 [ timko ] on 28 Jun 2004 - 15:37
See how quickly you can fill it up
#27 Embermage on 15 Jun 2004 - 19:02
It also looks like if you pay for the Plus version, they don't show you any graphical ads (I'm not sure if this is new or not, but I don't remember it).

Looks like Hotmail needs to give users a reason to stay, and quick. With 100 MB calling out my name over at Yahoo, I see very little incentive.
