Tom's Hardware seems to have gotten the first benchmarks of Alienware's latest gamming system. This new system by Alienware has dual-GeForce 6800. I wouldn’t mind having one of these for a LAN party.

Alienware moves to clear up consumer confusion; releases 6800 benchmark results.

In response to a recent unauthorized leak, Alienware today released its first 3DMark03 benchmark performance numbers from a test system running its new "Video Array" dual-video card technology first introduced at this year's E3. The document released to press lists 3DMark03 benchmark results comparing an Alienware 3.4GHz Intel Xeon test system running two GeForce 6800 video cards against the same system with only a single GeForce 6800 video card. The released document, a presentation slide dated from June 8th, includes 3DMark results taken from two settings: 1600x1200 with 8xAA (anti-aliasing) and 8xAF (anisotropic filtering), and 1600x1200 with only 8xAF.

The Video Array enabled dual-GeForce 6800 system outperformed the single video card system by a significant amount, outperforming the single card solution by almost 77 percent, scoring 3,105 3DMarks compared to1,758 3DMarks at 1600x1200, 8xAA, 8xAF. In the 1600x1200, 8xAF test, the dual-video card solution showed a 42 percent improvement, scoring 8,538 against the single card system's 5,992.

i want dual X800XT...!

#1.1 Juguard on 21 Jun 2004 - 04:50
man, these lame fanboys will never stop?

Wait until Alienware has X800XT dual, and buy it. And I promise, not only will do you no good, but you will be broke.
#1.2 Zeni on 21 Jun 2004 - 08:55
How is he a Fanboy? He just expressed an interest in an ATi product instead of Nvidia, it's not like he came out saying "OMGZ 1 X800 is 100% better than 2 of those!?1/!"

Isn't your reply a little hypocritical?
#1.3 Juguard on 22 Jun 2004 - 02:20
user your imagination. Its always about one being better than the other.
#2 MetaLRasaM on 21 Jun 2004 - 04:51
i want one too:'(

Why are ppl impressed? Building overpriced PC's is nothing new heck ill build ya one, just let me get your CC nfo.
#5.1 Zatko55 on 21 Jun 2004 - 11:38
Because Alienware engineered their hardware to be faster than any other system and has a product that nobody else can touch. Key word is engineer.
#5.2 Juguard on 22 Jun 2004 - 02:22
I'll engeneer myself for half the price.

Edit: oops, that was another one. but it ahd the same title. you cant have TWO FIRST benchmarks?

whats the point, my single graphics card that i have now can run everything that i through at it perfectly.
#8.1 epple on 21 Jun 2004 - 07:07
No, it can't.
#8.2 bluboy on 21 Jun 2004 - 08:09
do you mean throw d00d?
#8.3 ceminess on 21 Jun 2004 - 17:51
yeah lol,

and yes it can, i don't give a **** about benchmarks either, i am talking about movies and games, and so far i haven't had any problems with either. Currently there is absolutly NO need for someone to have dual graphics cards, unless you are doing some HEAVY garphics design.
#8.4 Juguard on 22 Jun 2004 - 02:25
If you do Graphics, you do not need a 6800 or a X800. You need a Quadro, or an FireXL. Which prooves your point even better, you do not need a dual video card setup, unless you feel you need to go insane setups, so you can win. It will not make you a better player.

Yea I know my Voodoo 3 3000 still plays all games like UT 2004 farcry at full settings. No point to upgrade if you have a Voodoo 2 or 3 **** ATI an Nvidia. 3DFX forever go voodoo power to the max baby.
#9.1 Juguard on 22 Jun 2004 - 02:28
heh, get at least a Geforce 4600 Ultra, then say what you said again. ...
(1 reply) #10 Boz on 21 Jun 2004 - 08:47
What are these games they tested the "video array" on..I mean come on...gimme a full test under UT2k4, FarCry and all and then tell me it's 70%. These benchmarks say nothing. And btw, did they clarify the PSU you will need for this? I read somewhere that it requires at least 680W PSU or even 800-something W PSU. Do you know how much that PSU will cost alone? What are you smoking Juguard? Both ATI cards running at lower power requirements will cost a lot cheaper than 2 6800s.
#10.1 epple on 21 Jun 2004 - 08:57
People buying these systems don't care about the price, and even less about how much power it needs. They just want their FPS, if you know what I mean...
And I would like to have seen test(s) in games, like Far Cry and UT2K4, as well, but I gues they'll come along as this system gets out.

NICE!

Now if only I could afford one

dual PCU, dual heat, dual noise, more than dual cost... you have to ask yourself, since you don't get anything near dual performance, is it really worth it?

QUOTE
outperforming the single card solution by almost 77 percent

I would say 77 percent is 3/4 of 100%, so actually, you do get something close to dual the performance. Not that I care and am supporting this thing, I think its crazy, but stats are stats, so you are only 23% away from being dual the performance, and i would say that is fairly close...

but then there is the 42% number, so that is less than half... so average the 2 off and yeah, you are right. 59% performance increase, nowhere double the performance.
#12.2 Juguard on 22 Jun 2004 - 02:27
When nvidia came out with new Drivers, they said that the new drivers performed about 40% better than the latest drivers. What does that mean? I dont know, but its definetly not speed, as I did not ever feel that much increase in a new driver.
#13 Destian on 21 Jun 2004 - 15:47
If they would release this technology on it's own I'd think about buying it... but I don't want to buy an alienware system. Oh well, I'm sure it will find it's way out eventually.
(1 reply) #14 Magallanes on 21 Jun 2004 - 15:58
pffff, to buy a expensiveness card only for play?... why they don't buy a ps2 instead?

And for graphics programs, nor geforce nor radeon are the correct choice, a wildcat is fairly better that any "cheapest and only for game" graphics card.
#14.1 mufdvr3669 on 21 Jun 2004 - 16:35
Cause some games don't come out for a PS2 and some games people enjoy more on the computer with a keyboard and mouse instead of a joystick.
#15 MegaManXcalibur on 21 Jun 2004 - 21:54
I would like to state my opinion on these fancy duel card computers... SWEET! Ok personally I can't justify the cost of a system like this since my computer works plenty good for gaming but honestly if I was a really really hardcore gamer that had an unlimited amount of money I'd probably have on of these things. But alas I don't have unlimited amounts of cash and I really don't deem myself hardcore enough of a gamer for this rig so I'll just stick with what I got since it works fine for me.

P.S. if anybody gets one of these rigs please made a review in the review section of the forum, I'm kind of interested to see how these computers turn out.

I'm interested on how well it will work on other OSs since from what I have gathered it needs software to talk to the special hardware. No *nix support pfffffft.
#16.1 edweb on 22 Jun 2004 - 08:21
Yeah, who cares about FarCry and UT2004 and those graphicy games. What about pure unadulterated FreeBSD command prompt mode benchmarks?

C'Mon, how does this increase my bottom line bogomips?

I've been looking to replace my current scroll-faster-than-you-can-see 8MB built-in Ati card stuffed into this Compaq p3-733 beast.

It's time to write decent software on a decent OS (FreeBSD), only then will the hardware be of use. No more chariots pulled by a mule.
#17 Grappa on 22 Jun 2004 - 17:16
So in this system, the graphics cards require 4 -- count them, FOUR molex connections! That leaves... what, 2 available for your hard drives, your CDroms, etc?
