Thanks to Dane2003 who posted leaked screenshots of the yet to be released Norton Antivirus 2005 currently in Beta. First impressions show more updates to the same UI layout we know from Norton Antivirus 2003 and 2004. A new addition would be the 'Feature Deactivation Alert' yet another process in the background running, as if we need them!

Anyway if tracking the newest popular software is your thing feast your eyes on the screenshots of the product that will most likely be available (as with earlier versions) to public test soon.

looks exactly the same with colour blending..
#3 yert* on 24 Jun 2004 - 10:47
Wow, it looks so much different than the past interfaces...

dont think people should judge a app on the interface.
#4.1 chacho on 24 Jun 2004 - 16:21
agreed. UI freaks puke when they see the NAV corporate interface, yet the performance is better than regular NAV...
#4.2 em_te on 24 Jun 2004 - 19:11
I hate the ActiveX interface. Try setting the My Computer Security Zone to medium or high and the NAV interface refuses to load.

The core functionality of the procuts has not changed since the XP upgrade in the 2002 edition. Since then, all it's been is product activation, snazzy interfaces (which admitedly are good) and other gimmicks.

I'm seriously considering a switch to a lessser known rival. Panda perhaps?
#6 dmbandfan22 on 24 Jun 2004 - 11:13
Not enough for me to upgrade.....sticking with 2003.

Just finished blowing Norton 2003 Professional off this computer. Blew Norton 2002 off another system of mine yesterday. Installed Kaspersky 5.0 on both. Immediately after installing KAV on system yesterday, ran a scan and it found a trojan in a desktop theme I had, that I've never used. Don't do themes, but it was a Molly Hatchet (my favorite band) theme. Have had that file for over 2 years and never had anything detected. In fact, yesterday was the first time anything has ever been detected on anything I've saved. I already had KAV on my other 3 systems and it has detected stuff that I've downloaded and immediately gotten rid of that Norton missed. Been reading of incidences like this quite frequenly lately about Norton.

I had the same experience, installed Kaspersky 5 and it found a trojan I had downloaded (in a file I never used)... however, Kaspersky caused some problems with my system, I think it may have conflicted with some other software I was running, so I switched to NOD32. Very happy so far.
#7.2 naap51stang on 24 Jun 2004 - 13:13
I gave up on Norton, when Win XP was in beta.......couldn't get it to work (obviously)....was talking
to some others on another newsgroup, they suggested NOD32, so I tried it......still using it, well
worth the subscription each year. Low resources, and my favorite thing, it stays the H*** out of your
way, just popping up if it detects something. Nothing against Norton, McAfee et al, but I love NOD32

#7.3 DOGglee on 24 Jun 2004 - 13:58
NOD32 really that good?? i seen many positive comments about the AV... but i haven't tried it yet
#7.4 Yotce on 24 Jun 2004 - 14:20
NOD32 is a pretty good, I'm using it past two years, run very smoothly, the only one trouble that I have is common invalid alerts for the Etap virus
#7.5 Mav Phoenix on 24 Jun 2004 - 17:46
NOD32 is really one of the best if not the best from my research.
#8 deadmonkey on 24 Jun 2004 - 11:39
I left Norton behind almost a year ago and now I use AVG7Pro. Much better [for me] and much cheaper
#9 briangw on 24 Jun 2004 - 12:20
Just get a free one like Avast!

I recently switched all my machines to using Symantic Corp instead of NAV. The home version is so much slower and takes up so much more resources. Will 2005 take any more of a hint from its bigger brother?
#10.1 YeCKeL on 24 Jun 2004 - 18:44
Word i have been using SCAV for a while and it in client mode is far better then NAV
#11 donachello on 24 Jun 2004 - 13:01
I still prefer McAfee AV does not screw up your recourses...
#12 IGx89 on 24 Jun 2004 - 13:12
Two words: "avast!" "free"

I've uninstalled Norton off of almost every computer I work on, and replaced it with avast! Home Edition (which is free). It works just as good as Norton, and I believe it also uses less resources. It has a great auto-updating system, and looks good (using Stardock's DirectSkin technology) to boot

remember norton 2004's auto-run screen? that was hillarious!!!
#13.1 Krankerz on 24 Jun 2004 - 16:57
What's with him?
(2 replies) #14 Puma on 24 Jun 2004 - 14:05
Trendmicro is preferable for me.
#14.1 chacho on 24 Jun 2004 - 16:22
housecall is preferable for me. i dont run an AV program, because i know how to recognize potential viruses. all i have running in the background is zone alarm. i still scan using housecall every 30 days or so, just in case one slipped through...havent found one to date.
#14.2 cork1958 on 24 Jun 2004 - 16:33
Exactly how I run my AV. Only open program running on my system is Kaspersky Anti Hacker. Used to be just ZA until all the troubles with the newest version and the bungling (bundling) of AV with it. Companies can never get that bundle crap right!
#15 vetmalebolgia on 24 Jun 2004 - 14:16
Slick
#16 Magallanes on 24 Jun 2004 - 16:18
The oldiest norton antivirus corporate edition is still the better!.

Ever since I found one virus I had on my puter since 1998 (one that made irc do DoS attacks) using Panda, I'll never go back to norton, nor mcafee.

Kaspersky for me.

That rhymes.
#19.1 djtaylor on 25 Jun 2004 - 08:27
No, it doesn't.
#20 Surr3al on 24 Jun 2004 - 18:24
Looks as big and bloated as ever. Way to go NAV. :
#21 CloLoD on 24 Jun 2004 - 19:30
looks the same to me as well... I'll stick with 2004...
#22 Nimbo on 24 Jun 2004 - 19:35
Looks Like I stick with Trend Micro OfficeScan & Server Protect.
#23 stockwiz on 24 Jun 2004 - 20:23
Use symantec corporate antivirus 8 here. Just noticed that there is a version 9. Might give it a look-see.
#24 bush on 24 Jun 2004 - 23:06
what happens if the virus has managed to deactivate the "Deactivation Alert" feature?
#25 Athlon7 on 25 Jun 2004 - 01:30
Don't even think about using this crap : ) Use AVAST! So so much better, Norton has screwed many of my friend's and relatives computers through its shoddy uninstall. It's bloated as hell, hogs resources, and is slow to update. Again, get AVAST! : )
#26 Vidar on 25 Jun 2004 - 01:47
Blah blah blah. I find it funny how NDA's are like water.. anyway... NAV2005 is what I'd call an Alpha build. The only issue I had was the uninstall was horrible. Had to "uninstall" twice to actually remove it. BSOD'ed on the first uninstall. I upgraded to 2004 and I have to say I don't see any difference. The only thing really wow-ing me on Hannibal (2005) was the fact they took a few under-the-hood items from Symantec Corp. and put it into their consumer product. Stick with 2004, quit downloading the pirated copies of NAV2003. Panda sucks balls and has been known to bring systems to a screeching halt. Trend Micro, on the other hand, is starting to look mighty good. My only complaint for TrendMicro is not an adequate trial period.
#27 Wiseman on 25 Jun 2004 - 05:23
corporate version is the best
#28 Raa on 25 Jun 2004 - 15:43
Nav 03.... 04.... 05... its all the same bloat... The amount of services it installs and ram it chews up is huge.... what a bag of balls :-/

SAV Corp 8 was the best I think.... Sav 9 isn't that crash hot, they decided to add like 3 more services into the program, which dont do anything ^_^

No AV at home for me, dad's on Nav '03 I think.
Work uses SAV Corp 9 now, after services disable, it runs happily!
