Sun Microsystems is giving away free Opteron-based Sun workstations to Java developers. The catch is you have to sign on for a three-year subscription to Sun Java Studio Enterprise. For serious Java developers this is great news, and also for any other company/school that deals with Java.

Sun Microsystems Inc. Thursday said it will next week roll out a program to give a new Opteron-based Sun workstation to Java developers who sign on for a Sun tools subscription program. Officials at the Santa Clara, Calif., systems maker said Sun will give a new Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Opteron-based w1100z workstation to developers who sign up for a three-year subscription to the Sun Java Studio Enterprise program, said John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun's Network Systems Group.

Sun's Java Studio Enterprise system is a complete environment for Java developers to develop, test and deploy applications, Sun officials said. John Fanelli, product director for Sun's Network Systems Group, said, "Sun is committed to bring out a complete Opteron line." The w1100z supports both Solaris for x86 and Linux operating systems, Fanelli said. "This allows the developer to have a single system with multiple development environments," he said.

Does anyone know how much this subscription is? Sun's website doesn't exactly point right to it.

Well not exactly worth it if you're not a Java developer. I'd rather build my own opteron workstation. I'm not big on off the shelf computer. They tend to use 2nd rate parts way too often.
