- Wow, this is a pretty strange move from Apple. They don't usually announce products like this
I wonder when we'll start getting details? September is a whopping 60 days away! Gotta be July/Aug info release surely!

- They could easily keep the details secret until the day they release them. They (almost) did that with the G5.

- I HATE how Apple does that...why make ppl speculate and wonder? Why not jus say "Hey, we're working on..."
???

- It can work both ways for Apple, the speculation leads to more media attention and a following of the products. But sometimes it can also lead to huge dissatisfaction, like the PMac 3GHz and the G5 PBs, as people speculate more and more the rumours become unrealistic, apple doesn't deliver, and people are geniunly dissapointed. But on the whole, this system has worked well for apple as it has helped to generate the cult following apples got - something which in my view apple depends on with its niche market.

It's because a LOT of people were pissed that they didn't release new iMacs. I mean really angry, as if Apple owed a new iMac line to them.
The thing with Apple's hype machine is that if they are unable to churn out the products on time, it can backfire really bad for them. They put up this announcment in order to kind of calm the waters, and tell people to be patcient
What interests me is this quote:
"the transition from the current iMac line to an all-new iMac line."
That practically admits that the next iMac will be a G5, not to mention the fact that their development time got pushed back (Meaning they had to get around the hardware limitations of something new).

- Don't you think you may perhaps be jumping the gun a bit? You don't know anything about the new iMac...no one does. Other than it's from Apple and it's new. I suppose if that's enough for you then spend your money as you see fit.

- I was hesitant to buy a G4 Powerbook considering the rumors of new G5 Powerbooks being released. Even though it has an aging processor, I decided to buy now because it seems a little foolish to wait 6 more months for the *possibility* that Apple will release the G5 PB.

The company also said it has stopped taking orders for the current iMac, sales of which have slowed in recent quarter, and didn't give details about the forthcoming iMac replacement. "We planned to have our next-generation iMac ready by the time the inventory of current iMacs runs out in the next few weeks," the Cupertino, California-based company said in a statement. "But our planning was obviously less than perfect." Shares of Apple fell nearly 6 percent to $30.40 in after-hours trade. Apple's statement was somewhat unusual in that the secretive company hasn't said anything publicly about redesigning the iMac, analysts said.
The company said it has stopped taking orders for the current iMac as it begins "the transition from the current iMac line to an all-new iMac line." Analysts said that Apple shouldn't be hurt by the lack of an iMac for the back-to-school shopping season, which is important for the company, because it has emphasized other models for the education market. In the education market, Apple has historically emphasized its iBook notebook PC and the eMac desktop machine rather than the iMac computer, which has a circular base and a flat-panel screen that hovers above it.
