Today Sony has unveiled their new music store/program to rival Apple's iTunes and the newly reformed Napster, dubbed Sony Connect. This online music store, now long overdue, features 500,000 single song and album downloads.

But, with iTunes around and its massive success, how can Sony expect to gain market share? Their approach is to attempt to offer more than just music downloads, as their website states "Think of the Connect music store as the best music store you’ve ever been to— not just a place to pick up the latest hits, it's also a great place to wander the aisles, learn about music, and discover new artists."

Connect is available to France, German and United Kingdom, by offering musics at 0,99 euros or 0,79 british pounds, the same price of iTunes Europe.

The extension to other european countries and investing in independent artists and labels it is also set in Sony's plans. Apple's european store wasn't successful in negotiations with the independent music association, which limited their offer in that area.

Well, this all looks like a nice effort from Sony, who knows if it will work or not... only time will tell. The nice bit is you get two free music downloads if you download the beta currently!

This store will help Sony promoting its digital music devices, whose connection to the site will be easier for the download of Sony's ATRAC music format. The equipment that support this format are: Network Walkman, CD Walkman, Hi-MD, PDAs Clie or Vaio computers.

The software has been out for two months. I've been able to access the store using said software for two months. What is new, exactly?

This is the European store.

It was only launched today.

Might want to edit the title to reflect that.

Odd that 2000 Pro is supported but 2000 Server isn't. Exactly how much difference is there between the two? Oh, and it's IE only. Losers.

iTunes has already been out for ages, if people wanted to buy music online, they would've signed up already, too little too late if you ask me. I'll stick with iTunes.

Any idea what format the songs you download from Connect are in? I can't find it on the site.

ATRAC.

WTF is that?
Quote this comment #6.3 Posted by Galley on 06 Jul 2004 - 13:55
Exactly! It's a typical proprietary Sony codec.
Quote this comment #6.4 Posted by [moribundi] on 06 Jul 2004 - 23:49
You mean just like .aac?

Sonic Sound Stage is bloated crap. It's skin is ugly too.
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by [moribundi] on 05 Jul 2004 - 21:11
Yes, I will trust the opinion of someone that doesn't even know the actual name of the program.

Maybe they should just coat everything in brushed aluminum, then everyone would go crazy over it.

They should coat everything in brushed aluminium and everyone would go crazy over it? Wow, while trying poorly to make fun of Apple, you've unwittingly painted the very picture of Sony in the real world. Well done.

Yes, iTMS is only successful because it uses a brushed skin. Very insightful. It has nothing to do with having the largest selection, best interface, coolest features, the best physical MP3 player, etc.

Why is the success of iTMS such a problem for you?
Quote this comment #7.3 Posted by [moribundi] on 05 Jul 2004 - 23:56
It's not. I have no problem with iTMS. That was in response to this;

QUOTE

Everyone seems to love brushed aluminum. I think its been run into the ground through overuse.

Way to trumpet your fanboyism though. It's very refreshing to see someone so easily upset over something so inconsequential as a comment on a news thread. Ever stop to consider that maybe people wouldn't harrass Apple advocates quite so much if they didn't get their panties wound around their axle every time they perceive someone is insulting Apple's honor? Find something better to worry about. I've got nothing against your precious Macintosh, mmkay?

Quote this comment #7.4 Posted by am_fek on 06 Jul 2004 - 00:52
It must help a lot to pretend anyone who disagrees with you is getting upset. #1 simply said the skin was ugly and apparently you couldn't hold yourself back from a dig at Apple. Why do you care so much about what he thinks of the skin?

Quote this comment #7.6 Posted by [moribundi] on 06 Jul 2004 - 02:00

one major factor about this and it will be the reason it will fail. No Mac support.

yes, the world revolves around mac support

Well, at least 3% of it does.
Quote this comment #8.3 Posted by tapo on 06 Jul 2004 - 18:26
No, the reason it'll fail is because it's only available in ATRAC. Which aside from being a horrible, horrible, horrible codec, only works on Sony hardware.

Say what you want about AAC, but at least the iPod (and iTunes) is a good player.

Just so some people know, seems when you download and install between July 1st and July 15th, you get a credit worth two downloads.

QUOTE

Download the Connect music store and get a credit worth two music downloads.

which one would be better? sony or itunes?
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by [moribundi] on 06 Jul 2004 - 00:08
Unless you own Sony hardware, probably iTunes. But I suppose the same could be said for owning an iPod. Depends on what sort of portable hardware you use.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #11 Posted by idvah on 06 Jul 2004 - 00:31
The thing is, once you've download the songs, you can't find them on your HD, they are hidden in some super secret folder. You do not have and real freedom with Sony, its not as good as iTMS

seen as the whole point in the posting was that it was the european store was opening.... it might have been a good idea to have a link for the european website for it....

If you go to the US sony connect webby and download the software from there you cant access the store at all "It appears that your computer is currently accessing Connect from outside the United States. Due to licensing restrictions, music on Connect is not available for download from outside the United States."

USEFUL!! :/

For European users only :

The European Version of ConnectTM can be found at http://www.connect-europe.com.

This is the answer I found in the Customer Support after I got the same problem.
