Great news for people who wanted an iPod mini, but lived outside of the US. Apple announced today that the iPod mini will soon be available worldwide on July 24. Apple delayed the shipment of the iPod mini because of "stronger-than-expected U.S. demand and tight supplies of the hard drive" earlier this year.

Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday said its iPod mini digital music player would be available internationally, beginning July 24, at a price of $249. In March, the company said it would delay the international launch of the player due to stronger-than-expected U.S. demand and tight supplies of the hard drive, which is at the core of the player.

Apple had originally planned to start worldwide shipping in April. Earlier this year, the company said it had 100,000 preorders for the iPod mini, a smaller version of the popular iPod player that is about the length and width of a business card and holds about 1,000 songs. The company, best known for its Macintosh computers, has found huge success in digital music. Apple has sold more than 3 million iPods and has a 50-percent market share of digital music players. Its iTunes online music service is the most popular legal music download sites, claiming 70 percent of all songs bought online.

$249 eh...

Lets just see how much they end up costing in the UK Store shall we? £134 when converted to our currency.. i'm betting the actual price ends up being nearer £200.
#1.1 daveoc64 on 07 Jul 2004 - 14:54
Thats how much most online retailers have them listed for.
#1.2 Discoteca on 07 Jul 2004 - 15:18
UK price is £179 (inc vat), not bad when there are other small HD players going for about £189 with only 1.5GB of storage compared to the 4GB the iPod mini has. Also saw another 1.5GB player for £150, so £179 is a good competitive price.
#1.3 Chicane-UK on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:22
Yeah not that bad then... £134 (US converted price) plus our 17.5% VAT takes it up to £157.45 - so whilst there is still over £20's worth of discrepancy, its not all that bad I spose
#1.4 aristotle-dude on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:53
There are probably some import duties and taxes on top of the converted price before the VAT is added.

Here in canada, there is a CRIA levy on mp3 players.

These iPods have been testing with paint mixers. I think mountain biking will be fine. You will probably not exhaust the buffer.

Do you guys think the regular iPod prices will drop a bit now? Thats all I have really been waiting for.
#5.1 dp123 on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:34

(4 replies) #9 mihir on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:42
the mini is a bit of a rip-off i reckson, might aswell buy the 15GB.
#9.1 dp123 on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:51
This again?!!! .... as your girlfriend keeps telling you: "Size doesn't always matter."
#9.2 aristotle-dude on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:59
Then don't buy one. If you think these are a rip off, what do you call those players with less than a 1GIG for 50 bucks less than the mini?
#9.3 sadatkarim on 07 Jul 2004 - 17:00
But size does matter! The mini looks awesome..its so small and thin!
#9.4 dp123 on 07 Jul 2004 - 17:02
sadat, I know, I know... My statement can run both ways... Just needed to make a joke at mihir's expense... Of course, he probably doesn't get it yet... He's probably sitting there saying: "What girlfirend?"
#10 XanDaMan on 07 Jul 2004 - 16:42

#11 angrybrit on 07 Jul 2004 - 17:03

#12.2 DrZoidberg on 07 Jul 2004 - 19:07
Apple's UK on-line store:

Here!

Only took five minutes to order and it was quite painless. Now the wait begins...

The size difference in the mini and the normal iPod is so redundant. I can understand people wanting a smaller MP3 player, but when the difference is an inch here or there, does it really matter?
#13.1 dp123 on 07 Jul 2004 - 18:41
Yes, it matters a great deal. I wouldn't put an iPod in my front pocket, but I would do so with a mini. The size difference is actually quite large.
#14 iomayho on 07 Jul 2004 - 18:21
i don't like the look of the ipod mini....., seems like a toy.... i'm sticking with my current ipod...^^
#15 sheer on 07 Jul 2004 - 18:45

hey, remember kids. Apple aren't US centric! Stevey-boy said it himself!!</sarcasm>
this is already many months and months overdue, much like everything apple do which arrives everywhere much later.
before someone flames me, yaeh, i know other companies are the same - look at the film industry 6month delays between film releases in the US and UK aren't uncommon due to prints being shipped to the uk to save reprinting costs. Even most asian counties where additional dubbing, or subtitling work needs to carried get films before the UK. The difference being of course, that the film industry doesn't deny being US centric.. unlike apple.
#20.1 theyarecomingforyou on 08 Jul 2004 - 18:09
US is their target audience... that's why you hardly see much Apple gear outside of the US (apart from the iPod). The Mac has very little presence in the UK, though the iPod is doing okay. They don't want to mess up the US market because that is where they are competing - the rest of the world is just an after thought.
