According to a post from the Windows Update Beta Team a new build of Windows XP SP2 will be released soon via the Windows Update V5 site. This build includes many fixes for reported issues. The build may be installed on Windows XP RTM, SP1, SP2 RC1 build 2096, or SP2 RC2 build 2149. Installing the new SP2 build onto any other SP2 build is not supported.

The build is expected to be posted today and Microsoft will send out emails to Windows Update V5 testers as soon as it's released. A good guess would indicate the build released will be 2161 unless further builds have met the requirements for public release. Stay tuned for more information.

#5.3 figgy on 09 Jul 2004 - 14:51

#5.4 =Indy-UK= on 09 Jul 2004 - 15:16
August 18th is the latest release date for SP2.

That could change though, but don't expect it any earlier.
#5.5 figgy on 09 Jul 2004 - 17:30
No. Bill Gates said it would be in July
#5.6 =Indy-UK= on 09 Jul 2004 - 20:19
NO! At work, we have been told by Microsoft its been put back to 18th August.

That was the latest information we were given last week.

#7.4 Arkos Reed on 09 Jul 2004 - 10:28
Of course... no patches on Linux, they just prefer to release a new distro every 6 months, too much to patch even for service packs LMAO

Are you possibly trying to state that Linux distributions are inferior to Microsoft service packs? You're such and idiot I don't know where to begin. First of all, Linux distributions are equvalent to a new release of Windows, not at Service Pack. If you're going to compare two things, at least make sure they're similar. Secondly, Are you implying that Linux distibutions are worse than Microsoft products becuase their rate of development is so much quicker than Microsoft's? That doesn't even make sense. "Linux sucks becuase they improve things too quickly." You're a complete idiot. Even if you don't like the speed of development of your paticular distribution, switch to a different one. You don't have to use something you don't like. The reason distributions are updated and changed so quickly is becuase patches and new features can be implimented by anyone. (Unlike MS products, which sometimes never get patched.) Did you notice how quickly a flaw in Firefox was patched after it was discovered. A new release was out in like an hour. I don't think MS could match that pace of development, EVER. Next time before you undertake some mindless Microsoft defensivism, realize the utter falacy of your argument and do use all a favor and shut the hell up.

#7.10 StarSabers on 10 Jul 2004 - 06:00
Linux Junkies always crack me up with how they're right and we're wrong, and how Linux is so much nicer. If you want to say it's an "Upgrade like going from Win 2K to WinXP", then you're out there kid. First thing, when something takes an hour to build (on an "older" 1.5 Ghz P4), and then you have to do the installing, I'd say Windows is easier, and that upgrading on Linux is more like ... hard work ... than anything. Of course, I've only built a new kernal once, and it had problems (I've not studied Linux very much, but I've at least recompiled the latest kernel). Anyway, when it takes Windows 30 minutes to upgrade to a new version, and get your working in 40 minutes, I'd have to say Windows is better. But it's a deadhorse debate ... I'll always be wrong, you'll always be right, or vica/versa.

I didn't say anything about Linux being favorable to Windows. I said that his argument about Linux disributions being buggy and therefore updated too often is flawed. I then went on to comment about the differences between the development style between Windows and Linux; as well as make a comparison between closed source/open source software. I pointed out that becuase Windows is closed source it has certain disadvantages to open source software when it comes to fixing bugs. If he's going to make an argument he should at least have the facts on his side. I didn't say anything like "Linux Ru1z and Windowz Sux0rs" because I'm not a tool like that. I simply pointed out that the previous poster was an idiot for trying to make an absurd claim. But you saw that I didn't bash a Microsoft alternative in my post, so you decided to throw out all of your critical reading and comprehension skills and make a post about something completely irrelevent. Next time try understanding what I meant by my post before posting a comment that has nothing to do with my argument. Nice going ace.

I'm glad they are trying to make sure it's worthy but I wish they would just release it already. It's never going to be perfect; save something for Service Pack 3.

(3 replies) #13 ingrampj on 09 Jul 2004 - 10:41
Looks as if we are going to get a RC3 then. that is fine by me..at least when the final SP2 is RTM we should be able to rely on the fact that everything is working as it should. All this talk and discussion on SP2 in it's various guises and versions does seem to have taken the focus away from Longhorn and left the developers to be able to work on it without too much news and speculation about it escaping to the media.
#13.1 y_notm on 09 Jul 2004 - 16:28
No, I think its crunch time. The post that cream refers to wants every tester to download this build right away to find and report bugs as quickly as possible. They are pushing to get SP2 out the door, and this will be one of the last builds released to testers, though I'm sure will get at least one more within the next three weeks, to make sure there are no regressions from this build and squash any last bugs.
#13.2 ElectronicCowboy on 09 Jul 2004 - 17:52
I remember reading a news post on here saying all work on longhorn was halted to try and get SP2 done faster, not sure if it's true or not but it doesn't sound like any work is being dong on longhorn currently.
#13.3 todd` on 10 Jul 2004 - 00:00
It is true.. and that's the reason there's not much work on Longhorn. Microsoft put all its workers on Longhorn to get something ready for Winhec and the moved them all to SP2 to get that out as quickly as possible.

#21.4 =Indy-UK= on 10 Jul 2004 - 00:06
RTM = Release To Manufacturing. So yeah that would be final, which this build isn't.

Be careful, evaluation periods not finish until 1 or two month after the public release...

(3 replies) #23 axis on 09 Jul 2004 - 14:29
If I read that right, it said you can install on top of RC1 correct? Because I installed RC1 from a slipstream and can not uninstall.
#23.1 chacho on 09 Jul 2004 - 16:57
a good idea would be not to slipstream a pack until its final...

think about it: why would you slipstream a beta product?
#23.2 axis on 09 Jul 2004 - 17:15
Well I guess I have no further questions, since that answered them all.

Smart-ass comments solve nothing, think about it.

I slipstreamed it because I wanted to try out SP2 and I needed to reinstall XP anyways. I hate 'upgrading' to SP's, I have always slipstreamed. It is the cleanest way to do it and I will do it when it is RTM.
#23.3 FISKER_Q on 09 Jul 2004 - 18:14
Yeah slipstreaming is generally nice. But i only downloaded the slipstreams cause i haven't had a Windows disc at home for a long time now.

And i don't want to look through several hundred warez sites just to find a image of windows xp.

So i just download the slipstreamed packages instead.

How many builts are they going to release why not just stamp final and release the damn thing to the public? So retarded to keep saying they are going to release it in July then every other week they have a new built.

How many people at Microsoft does it take to patch a hole? No idea they never actually patch a hole yet. ROFL
