After a message on the Windows Update V5 newsgroups regarding a possible interim build being released, Microsoft have back tracked and denied that there will be another interim release. Mike Brannigan (MSFT) called the posting "Untrue and inaccurate" and stated that the next public release is the RTM. According to reliable sources at Microsoft the scroll build (RTM) is due to be finished as early as next week or within the next 2 weeks. Current builds stand at 2161.

After the RTM date OEMs have 90 days to ship SP2 pre-installed on their XP machines. Within those 90 days they're required to ship the XP SP2 update CD with machines. CDs will be made available at support outlets (PC World Support) and on frontpage magazine covers. Microsoft are aiming to make sure everyone gets this update and will be spending just as much time & money promoting it as developing it.

Once Windows XP SP2 has hit RTM this will provide room for more development on Longhorn. Currently there have been only 8 builds since the WinHEC build in May. 8 builds in 2 months shows how Microsoft is focussing on XP SP2 at the moment. Build 4088 is the latest build internally and as of yet there have not been any reported changes since WinHEC.

Around the October time frame we will see "XP Reloaded" in action. The marketing campaign will kick off with the availability of Windows XP SP2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2004, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and Windows Media Player 10. Interestingly Microsoft is changing the way Media Center Edition works. Media Center Edition was always based off the Windows XP Professional version of XP and not the home edition. Current MCE builds lose the ability to add the machine to a domain after setup is complete (you can still add the machine during setup). Microsoft are trying to convert MCE so it's stripped of professional features so it's cheaper for OEMs and for a possible retail on the product. If they could package MCE alongside OEMs and produce a "Media Center Kit" that would combine a TV card/Remote and Media Center Edition software it would sell very, very well.

For now though lets look forward to Service Pack 2 reaching the final stage of development and focus on Windows XP Service Pack 3, lets face it SP2 is SO last week ;)

Update: The proposed date is the 21st of July.

Neptune can run multiple websites side-by-side on the same computer over one IP address, allowing you to serve websites on different domains. Full MIME-type conversion and HTTP-Basic authentication are provided as standard, to ensure a standards-compliant browsing experience across the broadest range of platforms. The server interface has been widely acclaimed as friendly but powerful enough for both first-time and experienced users alike.

  • For administrative purposes, Neptune features a Remote Console accessible through any web browser. Once logged-in, you can view statistics about the server, reset cache or other settings, and view event logs.
  • When you're away from your computer, Neptune can be set-up to automatically upload the server address (the means of accessing your server over the Internet) to an FTP server of your choice. This facility ensures that you can always find the current address of the server from wherever you are.
  • Neptune features 'Virtual Folders', which allows you to make any folder on your computer a sub-folder of your web site. For example, 'C:My Documents' could be made accessible through the folder 'mydocs' in your web site.
  • Neptune also allows you to design your own error pages, such as when a file is not found, or if a user is unauthorised to access a certain resource.

You can choose to protect specific files or folders in a directory, or all files and folders under a given directory. The security model is easy to manage and based on user access privileges; not only are resources within your website protected, you can restrict certain program operations (Shutting down, Clear Logs) to users as well.

...As soon as it is RTM, big OEMs automatically get it and then internally it is deployed. Then it gets released to premier support customers and then finally an RTW in August.

We'll probably see it leaking out at the end of July same day as RTM or a few days afterwards...

This still sounds pretty accurate to me based on the information we now have.

I don't recommend it though, unless your computer already came with a SP1 build. For instance many computers you buy now will have the recovery discs already at the XP SP1a build. If not, in otherwords if you upgraded to SP1 or SP1a yourself, I would highly recommend you format the computer and then upgrade straight to SP2. Much cleaner and it will be a bit faster as a result.
Quote this comment #21.3 Posted by Ely on 10 Jul 2004 - 15:53
Why wouldnt you recommend it? SP2 is designed for and should upgrade XP from SP1 without no problems, Of course always a clean installation will give you a smoother Windows installation than any other option.
Quote this comment #21.4 Posted by Hills420 on 10 Jul 2004 - 16:02
Yes, that is the way you do it. Microsoft does not expect you to do a reinstall.

My personal preference is to perform a fresh install of everything... but then again I do that every 12 months anyway.
Quote this comment #21.5 Posted by Jason on 10 Jul 2004 - 16:23
Obviously there won't be any problems as you can only buy XP with SP1 slipstreamed now.

But if this is true...then what is this post by Microsoft on the newsgroups??

Hi All,

This is a heads-up that a new build of Windows XP SP2 will be released soon
via the Windows Update V5 site. This build includes many fixes for reported
issues.

Please download and install the new build as soon as possible after it is
released. It is important that any issues are reported quickly.

The build may be installed on Windows XP RTM, SP1, SP2 RC1 build 2082, or
SP2 RC2 build 2149. Installing the new SP2 build onto any other SP2 build is
not supported.

We will send out an e-mail and post to the newsgroup when the build is
available.

Thanks!

Windows Update Beta Team

Quote this comment #51.1 Posted by PsykX on 11 Jul 2004 - 21:53
I say MS shouldn't do SP3 and work REALLY hard on Longhorn to release it in November 2005 instead.

But they will never do this, I know it's a crazy idea
BTW, SP3 will take less time to be out than SP2, because Windows XP is far more secure in this release, and that was the big flaw in Microsoft that MS wanted to get rid of. Now all they can do is bug fixes and stuff like that.
Quote this comment #51.2 Posted by McGazza on 11 Jul 2004 - 23:51
Okay then quite valid except how do you know that. Did you know SP2 was going to be the way it was. That security centre was never even included in SP2 at first anyway! Did MS say they were gunna release it cos of a big flaw. I shudda read MORE if it was
