Thanks xStainDx for this heads up posted in Back page News on our forums.
Microsoft has now also offered the latest build of Service Pack 2 via Windows Update V5 exclusively to testers. However a registry key has already been posted that allows anyone running the public preview of RC2 to login to Windows Update V5 and download it. The key won't allow users running RTM or SP1 builds of Windows XP to install because they will be redirected to Windows Update V4. Windows Update V5 is scheduled to go live shortly before or together with the web release of SP2. Like many other new offerings of Microsoft the release date has been pushed back several times along with SP2 now scheduled to release sometime in the beginning of August (almost 3 years after the 25th Oct 2001 release of Windows XP).

The 2162 build of SP2 has been widely accepted as a stable and Release to Web (RTW) ready update for Windows XP. Service Pack 2 adds a new Security Center to monitor Automatic Updates, Firewall activity and Virus protection. Internet Explorer now has a pop-up blocker built in and enhanced download management, a welcome update after an almost feature frozen IE hit the web with Windows 2000 in early 1999.

The email received by testers can be viewed by clicking 'Read more' and we also have a thread discussing the new features of SP2 on our forums.

isnt posting the reg key required soliciting "Warez" ?... Im sure it breeches our NDA
Quote this comment #1.1 Posted by Neobond on 17 Jul 2004 - 12:03
well seeing as SP2 is a free update I wouldn't consider it warez, if anything it only breaks the NDA between tester and Microsoft.

This is all togeither not true when it comes to sp1. I have sp1 and followed the link to windows update v5. It took an hour, but it installed many automatic update features and the new windows update console on my computer. I am still running sp1 though, i did not upgrade to sp2.

BTW... i have run many builds on sp2 on other machines. So it seems that they are testing the windows update v5 with sp1 machines. Hence that is what happened to me. I am waiting for the rtm then i will upgrade. I wonder if it is 2162... Probably not.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #3 Posted by anakinsolois on 17 Jul 2004 - 12:27
would i have t uninstall this build in order to install the RTM of SP2? or will i be albe to install the final build over this?
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #4 Posted by GwaRGuITaR on 17 Jul 2004 - 12:27
wait, i don't get why this is allowed but direct links were not... anyways, nice job mods.

while ms frowns upon you to post direct links, the sp2 links posted by others should be less monitored.

the more people testing this beast, the better. anyone has access to file a bug when downloading these builds. not just beta testers. if they want to muck up their own machine that's their deal, but at least let them file the bug on it

i however have access to the betaplace bug system which i trust a bit more, but still!

Build 2149 is RC2, NOT this build (2162)!

Well it messed up the slow downward movement of my mouse, so I'd say it's not ready yet.

Mine too!
Mouse is screwed in this build.
Quote this comment #6.2 Posted by DOGglee on 17 Jul 2004 - 14:53
hmm.. if this's true... i guess i better not install it
Quote this comment #6.3 Posted by Kracal on 17 Jul 2004 - 15:59
Mouse is fine in current build of sp2

I guess you guys have a lot more time to mess around with beta software than I do anymore.
When I got into computers in the late 80's, I was screwing around with just about anything that
was beta. Now days, when I get home from work, I'm too friggin' tired to screw with anything that
would possibly cause my computer to hose itself
Heck, I even wait a week or two after something comes out, just to make sure it's stable before I
install it.
Ahhhhhhhhh youth........I miss it sometimes

Yeah, turn off acceleration if you're desperate.
Quote this comment #6.6 Posted by Gobelet on 20 Jul 2004 - 19:20
Nah, just turn off "Enhance Pointer Precision", it'll works better after.

still waiting for final!
(2 replies) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #10 Posted by Gobelet on 17 Jul 2004 - 15:15
It won't install on mine (stuck on "Installing File NTOSKRNL.EXE"...). Hopefully it didn't started to write over this file before I hard rebooted the computer.

Anyway got a problem, and i wanna know if it's the same for everyone. Sometimes some of my system tray icons are disappearing. It's random. Sometimes MSN Messenger disappear (no it's not in the inactive icons, don't think i'm that dumb), or the Sound Volume Icon. Actually the Battery/Power Management has disappeared, even if I deactivate it in the control panel, and reactivate it.

this is a good sign you have a ****ed up registry and time for a reinstall from scratch.
Quote this comment #10.2 Posted by Gobelet on 17 Jul 2004 - 21:59
This is a fresh install of XP, I mean, it's 2 weeks old... It began with SP2 as well. I'm gonna remove it, and wait a few weeks for the final.

all I know is that SP2 isn't showing up at all on WU v5
XP Pro sp2 rc2 2149 is what I'm running ..can't even get any patches or anything else that should be available there

so wtf gives eh? I'm running on a legit copy so I should be getting 2162 should I not?
Quote this comment #11.1 Posted by ev0| on 17 Jul 2004 - 18:43
it isn't a public build like RC2, so NO, unless you are a beta tester or you have the reg key.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #12 Posted by stockwiz on 17 Jul 2004 - 16:06
Installed the update over SP2 RC1 with no problems. So far, so good. All the previous settings remain unchanged. Security center doesn't seem to recognize the "look n stop" firewall but that's not unexpected... I don't understand why people are so obsessed with getting xp's approval anyways... just tell them you're using one.

One change I noticed is on startup, the logo has changed.. it no longer says "windows xp professional" but just says "windows xp" and doesn't distinguish professional from home in the logo. Perhaps it was like that before but I just didn't notice until now.

Edited: If you don't like the behavior of the mouse pointer, it's slow speed when moving the mouse slowly you can change it. Go to control panel, mouse configuration...pointer options, and uncheck the box that says "enhance pointer precision"

yea the edition of my windows went away too, and the security center says my norton is not working, but I think thats because my live update is off and they think something is wrong with it, but I could be wrong..

maybe im weird or something, but i dont really want to install sp2 until it goes final, when i plan on attempting a slipstream and format...

Just installed via Windows Update v5... no problems with mouse pointer speed yet. For some reason, right clicking any file just hangs my system till I end task drwtsn32.exe. Except for this problem, everything's workin' fine.

I just wonder: why not to wait for public release of SP2?

something missing in that "read more" section, it doesn't have the whole email... there is also a statement that say which build of xp is compatible. Here is the complete email:

Dear Windows Update v5 Beta testers:

New Windows XP SP2 Build Available

Build 2162 of Windows XP SP2 RC2 is now available on the Windows Update (WU) v5 site. This is an interim build that resolves many of the reported issues in Windows XP SP2 and WU v5. It is critical that Windows XP SP2 beta testers download and install build 2162. We are hoping for a large number of downloads through Automatic Updates (AU). Please give AU a couple of days to download the new build before you visit the WU v5 site and pull it down manually. Please post in the newsgroup to discuss your experience with AU.

IMPORTANT Please read the following:

· Build 2162 will be visible on the WU v5 site only if the following conditions are met:
o Windows XP is the operating system
o A special registry key is set
· Build 2162 may only be installed over non-slipstreamed installs of Windows XP SP2.
· Build 2162 is only compatible with the following builds of Windows XP SP2:
o Windows XP RTM
o Windows XP SP1
o Windows XP SP2 RC1 build 2096
o Windows XP SP2 RC2 build 2149
· If you are using an interim build of Windows XP SP2, you should re-image your hard drive with a compatible version of Windows XP. Returning to a system restore point is also supported.
· Rollback or uninstalling an interim build is not supported.
· Please refer to the details link on the SP2 download for disk space requirements.
· The pre-release versions of WU are for testing purposes only!
· Please do not depend on pre-release versions of WU to help keep your computer secure and up to date; if you are not a Windows XP SP2 beta program participant, go to the <http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> site. If you are part of the Windows XP SP2 beta program, please take extra care regarding computer security, as you will not be able to visit the WU v4 site.

Special Registry Key

A script is available in the WU section of BetaPlace. Please note that any modification to your PC's registry can create issues. Do not run this script on a production computer or any computer holding critical data.

1. To download the script, click BetaPlace <https://beta.microsoft.com>.
2. Log in using your passport.
3. Click the Windows Update link.
4. Click the Downloads link in the left pane.
5. Click the ssrk_edw.zip link.
6. Follow the directions for the download application.
7. After the file is downloaded, unzip it.
8. Double-click the ssrk_edw.reg file to set the key in your registry.

Once you have completed these steps, you should be offered Windows Update SP2 when you visit the WU site. Depending on your settings, AU may also offer build 2162.

Please visit the BetaPlace site and ensure your contact information is up to date. We want to be able to invite you to participate in future beta programs. While at BetaPlace, please complete the survey located under the Survey link in the left pane of the WU section.

The WU beta team will continue to send out news updates. Please send content suggestions to ---- If you have comments regarding the layout or content of the WU beta pages, please post them to the newsgroup or send them to ------.

Thank you very much!
Windows Update Team

This is the whole email.

Notice the "compatible with XP RTM, SP1, SP2 RC1 2096 and RC2 2049" so yes, it is SP1 compatible...

latest build installed... yes, I see the mouse problem. It's quite subtile... as for me, it happen when going over the 3 actions button in the top left corner (minimize, restore and close)... it also happen when I go over the taskbar from the desktop (or whatever window on it) and when overing over a button on the taskbar... The problem is simply that it seems to stop getting "mouse move" information for a small amount of time (not even a second) and then jump over to continue... like a lag but not a big one... or like when your mouse (laser) miss a reading when moving so it stop moving and continue after... but it's nothing big...

I read again and... the email stated here... I think it's in the wrong news... isn't that the email for the windows update v5 rc2? Because I received another email with these information and that was comming from WU v5 beta testing program, and not SP2 beta testing...

I can get into WU V5 with SP1 (I'm waiting for the final release of SP2). I just go to the Windows Update site and change the URL from v4 to v5... Although I'm not going to use V5 yet...

If it works for me, it should work for everyone else too.
Quote this comment #22.1 Posted by Nodiaque on 18 Jul 2004 - 19:29
the prob isn't getting into v5, it's downloading the sp2 2162... you need a special reg key to see the download
