Chip giant Intel said it has released low voltage and ultra low voltage Pentium Ms and Celeron Ms, as we reported before. The processors all use the 90 nanometre process technology and are the LV 738, the ULV 733 and 723 and the Celeron M Ultra Low Voltage 353. The chips are intended at the mini notebook, sub notebook and tablet PC segments of the market.

The 738 is a 1.40GHz Pentium M with 2MB of cache, a thermal design rating of 10W, and costs $284. The 733 is a 1.10GHz ULV with 2MB, consumes five Watts and costs $262. The Pentium M ULV 723 runs at 1GHz, and costs $241, while the Celeron M ULV 353 is a 900MHz chip with 512K of cache, and costs $161.

Updates

According to the article at MSNBC, the new iPod will also contain the following features:

  • Longer battery life (50%) through more efficient method of power conservation.
  • Increased averaged play time, now at 12 hours.
  • Multiple On-The-Go playlist support
  • Ability to delete songs off the playlist
  • Users will now be given a choice to play their tunes at 25% slower or faster.
  • Lower price: $399 for 40GB, and $299 for 20GB. The 15 GB model has been discontinued.

    Personally, I am hoping that some of these new features will be made available to existing users through firmware updates. I guess we will just have wait and see...

    Dunno what that is. But I know a volcano is pretty hot.

    wow thats some low wattage there

    This makes me think of how much a buisness that has a lot of computers can save in electric bills by using these low-power chips. Or is the power consumption of any CPU dwarfed by that of the monitors and even the lights in the room... I haven't really looked into it.

    Back in the old 486 days, it was cheaper to leave your computer on than a light bulb (as long as you turned off your monitor). today, that has completely changed. Think about how much damage to your power bill a 450W power supply does. That is the same as 6 - 60 watt light bulbs being on all the time. LCDs require a lot less power than a CRT, but a monitor can still use a lot of power. The LCD I'm on now uses about (wait math) uses about 140 watts (I think, I can't remember the formula for watts uses votage and current I think it is P=I*V). I would think a company moving to all laptops might save quite a bit on power though...

    S = I*V (where the * is the complex conjugate)
    P = |I||V| cos(theta) where theta is the angle between I and V
    Q = |I||V| sin(theta)

    S = P + jQ

    Thats when you are in AC anyway.

    Yeah, my power supply is 480W. But just because it is so many Watts doesn't necessarily mean that it is using it's rated. I mean, if the hardware needs less, i wouldn't think the power supply would be just disperssing what isn't being needed. Or am I wrong? I don't know, besides the above I didn't do very well in my Power corse.

    No, the PSU only uses as much as the system demands from it, contrary to popular belief.

    I wonder how these compare in performance to Northwoods?
    #6 XiXora on 20 Jul 2004 - 18:56
    less than a light bulb

    The Pentium M's are great. I hope Intel introduces them to the desktop soon.

    They probably suck on performance that low wattage can't run any gaming system

    Good logic. By that logic, Cyrix chips rocked.
    #8.2 T-Metal on 22 Jul 2004 - 14:51
    Yeah, stupid logic.

    Desktop, maybe not.

    I could see using them either for an MP3 server or as a firewalll (esp if Intel lowers the price

    Pentium 'Ms' sounds like Pentium Miss the female processor, and shes single too
    #10.1 Rudy on 20 Jul 2004 - 22:16
    no, sounds like Pentium Microsoft
