A new build of Windows Server 2003 SP1 has been released to beta testers this evening. It seems springboard is now becoming a part of Server 2003 finally. There is a major update to the Security Configuration Wizard (SCW) in this release. Among the improvements:

  • A completely new firewall configuration component.
  • SCW is the recommended way of configuring the Windows Firewall on Windows Server Systems.
  • Automatic port detection for non-default configurations, multiple instance scenarios, and 3rd Party Applications
  • Additional Server Role definitions.
  • SCW now contains definitions for over 60 different server roles. Including roles for applications like Exchange, SQL Server, etc.
  • Compliance analysis support.
  • Allows you to determine whether servers are in compliance with expected policies.
  • Complete command line tool support.
  • Supports deploying and analyzing security policies remotely en-masse.
  • New support for:
  • IIS-specific settings
  • Audit policy settings
  • Additional registry values
  • Group Policy-based deployment of SCW-generated security policies
  • Inclusion of security INF templates.
  • Centralized knowledge base repository
  • Clustered environments
  • Multi-level rollback

A new PSDK and DDK will be made available in the next few days and there is
no code coverage build for 1218.

    Updates

According to the article at MSNBC, the new iPod will also contain the following features:

  • Longer battery life (50%) through more efficient method of power conservation.
  • Increased averaged play time, now at 12 hours.
  • Multiple On-The-Go playlist support
  • Ability to delete songs off the playlist
  • Users will now be given a choice to play their tunes at 25% slower or faster.
  • Lower price: $399 for 40GB, and $299 for 20GB. The 15 GB model has been discontinued.

Personally, I am hoping that some of these new features will be made available to existing users through firmware updates. I guess we will just have wait and see...

I can't wait to get testing on SP1 at work.

Now if you look at what SP1 is offering you will notice that it is NOT a workstation OS

er...Jason, it's called Windows 2003 SERVER. Duh it's a server, it was made to be server. But every OS can be turned into a workstation with a few tweaks. Works on my machine just fine and I can also use it as a server when I have a project to develop in ASP.NET.

    Finally a new XP64 build!!!

    Lets hope that
    -WLAN now works
-That it will have XP32 SP2 features
-That it will still NOT have WPA (read some bad news about this on xp64 public newsgroup)

I still have a copy of 2003 Server Enterprise Edition, the one Microsoft let the public download for a trial. None of my stuff would work on it.

This is an addendum to the download letter for SP1 build 1218.

The recently released build 1218 of Service Pack 1 requires that you use the corresponding 1218 (or later) version of the Software Development Kit (SDK) and Driver Developer Kit (DDK). Use of any past SDK or DDK with this build is not supported and will lead to serious development problems. Please discontinue use of previous SDK tools.
As of today (7/21/2004) the 1218 SDK and DDK are not available. They will be ready in the next week or so. Watch the private SP1 beta newsgroups for further developments.

    Thank you,

    Windows Beta Team
