Apple and long time partner Motorola have announced plans to allow users of Apple's iTunes to transfer their songs to Motorola cell phones. This will be done either USB or Bluetooth, but isn't expected till the first half of next year.

Motorola and Apple today announced they are partnering to enable millions of music lovers to transfer their favorite songs from the iTunes jukebox on their PC or Mac, including songs from the iTunes Music Store, to Motorola's next-generation "always with you" mobile handsets, via a USB or Bluetooth connection. Apple will create a new iTunes mobile music player, which Motorola will make the standard music application on all its mass-market music phones. It is expected to be available in the first half of next year.

"We can't think of a more natural partnership than this one with Apple, the brand synonymous with easy-to-use, legal music downloading, and Motorola, the innovator in mobile technology," said Ed Zander, Chairman and CEO, Motorola. "Being able to transfer songs you've purchased from iTunes to Motorola mobile handsets expands the market reach for both of us and drives new revenue for customers, delivering an amazing music experience to millions of wireless users."

Previously, music purchased through RealNetworks' music download services could most easily be played on devices that supported its copyright protection technology. By the same token, the easiest way to get digital music onto the iPod player was through Apple's iTunes Music Store, which uses its own system. The same held true for devices that supported Microsoft's Windows Media Player anti-piracy technology.

Microsoft said it could not immediately comment on the system.

And 4 articles down, Microsoft is selling wrist watches. Sounds like Apple is on the high street and Microsoft just slipped down the alley.

Yeah and which one will sell more? I certainly don't know of anyone who wants a data watch but the cell phone market is huge. How much can you store on a watch anyway? How would you use a watch as a music player anyway? Attach a set of head phones to it? What about battery life? Do you know of any watches that are rechargeable?

I'm afraid MS is going after the wrong niché market in this case. It's way too small.

If Apple and Motorola have such a strong partnership, then WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO ADD COMPATIBILITY TO MY BLUETOOTH V600?!?!

I just don't get it. They love each other, but Motorola's best (bluetooth) phone is having the hardest time on the Mac.

Also, if this issue gets resolved, I wonder if they will add this new "always with you" feature to existing phones (like the V600) or if you have to buy a brand new phone...

True, quite ironic and moronic.

There aren't enough mobile phones that offer MP3 players. You would think that it wouldn't be hard form Nokia to add one on their phones that run Symbian, but alas the user is forced to download a 3rd party MP3 player, which will only play in mono.
