Microsoft have published Office 2003 SP1 this morning to OfficeUpdate. It was widely expected that Microsoft would release this small update at the end of Summer and without the usual fanfare of service packs. The update (17meg) contains significant security enhancements, in addition to stability and performance improvements. SP1 will update Access 2003, Access 2003 Runtime, Excel 2003, FrontPage 2003, Outlook 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Publisher 2003, Word 2003, Office 2003 Web Components and Office XP Web Components. SP1 also includes many performance and feature enhancements for InfoPath 2003.

Visio 2003 SP1 is available as a seperate download at the Microsoft Download Center. OneNote SP1 is on OfficeUpdate, as is SP1 for Project 2003.

Build numbers after installation:

  • Outlook 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1
  • Word 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1
  • Excel 2003 (11.6355.6360) SP1
  • Access 2003 (11.6355.6360) SP1
  • InfoPath 2003 (11.6357.6360) SP1
  • PowerPoint 2003 (11.6361.6360) SP1

My installation fails everytime I try to install it via Office Update. No reason given, just that it was unsuccesful. (yes, it is a legal copy)

I guess I'll try again when they release the standalone.
    #6.1 Trajik 2600 on 27 Jul 2004 - 14:01
Is your install CD in the drive you installed it from? Maybe it's not prompting for the CD and barfing when it can't find it.
    #6.2 monkeydust on 27 Jul 2004 - 17:27
My problem turned out to be a beta version of Windows Installer that somehow got installed.

Does anyone know if this fixes the prompting for password in Outlook 2003 when connecting to an Exchange 2003 server over HTTP?
    #7.1 creamhackered on 27 Jul 2004 - 11:19
Oh yes that was irritating. I'll take a look on my tablet when i'm out and about.
    #7.2 SOSAGES1 on 27 Jul 2004 - 11:22
it was my understanding this was be design otherwise it would be more unsecure - unless ur chatting about another issue...

    anyway *waits for admin install*
    #7.3 PR. on 27 Jul 2004 - 11:52
    Doh, still seems to occur

Theres an option in the account setup saying "Always prompt for user name and password" but its unchecked

Still no right click > close on the Outlook 2003 system tray icon
Still no Junk mail > Add domain (@domain.com) to JUNK list

    What exactly has SP1 done?!
    #8 blowdart on 27 Jul 2004 - 11:17
OneNote SP1 is on OfficeUpdate, as is SP1 for Project 2003
    #9 yannis on 27 Jul 2004 - 11:32
Even with SP1 my Word installation still crashes all the time in a specific document (mssp3fr.dll is the problem but I cannot fix it though).

What's the difference between standalone and admin?

    I thought standalone = admin?
    #12.2 Joe User 99 on 27 Jul 2004 - 12:34
the standalone (client) install is for updating a locally installed copy. For example, the one installed on your HD. Standalone, meaning you don't have to connect to the Office Update site to install it.

The Admin installer is for updating a Administrative installation point or for slipstreaming into the source media. For example, the CD media, or a administrative install point on a corporate network. (And actually, I think it will update client installs too, but don't quote me on that.)

    #13 djeter on 27 Jul 2004 - 12:22
Hypothetically, would this be the Administrative Install here? It's 72.17 MB in size.

    YAY!

    #15.1 Joe User 99 on 27 Jul 2004 - 13:47

    Microsoft® Office Access 2003
    Microsoft® Office Access 2003 Runtime

    #15.2 dkldkldkl on 27 Jul 2004 - 13:56
I noticed it too joe, but I install Office 2003 before installing FrontPage and now I got SP1 slipstreamed, so I think FrontPage will turn out non-SP1ed
    #15.3 SoLoR123 on 27 Jul 2004 - 14:18
    How did you slipstreamed it?
    #15.4 dkldkldkl on 27 Jul 2004 - 14:26
    http://www.petri.co.il/office_xp_sp_slipstreaming.htm
Just with different file names and locations... works on office, visio, onenote and project...
    #15.5 dkldkldkl on 27 Jul 2004 - 15:04
I slipstreamed Office 2003 SP1 into FrontPage 2003 and it works
    #15.6 SoLoR123 on 27 Jul 2004 - 15:52
    Hm...

    msiexec /p c:office2003sp1MAINSP1ff.msp /a c:office2003cdPRO11.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb

    and

    msiexec /p c:office2003sp1OWC11SP1ff.msp /a c:office2003cdOWC11.MSI short
    filenames=true /qb

but into what i have to slipstream OWC102003SP1ff.msp ?
    #15.7 dkldkldkl on 27 Jul 2004 - 16:10
Office 2003 SP1 also contains updates to the Microsoft® Office XP Web Components, so you don't need that for your Office 2003... (Office 2003 CD has OWC10.MSI, but when you do setup /a it doesn't get transferred because it's unnecessary)
    #16 dark kyuubi on 27 Jul 2004 - 13:50
    Yes! Finally a update..nice
    #17 Galley on 27 Jul 2004 - 14:38
I have been unable to install any Office 2003 updates for some time now. Even this SP1 won't update. WTF?
(using 100% legal Office 2003 and Windows XP)
    #18 xStainDx on 27 Jul 2004 - 14:53
    Office Update

Just head over there it'll scan for what you need and download it just as easy as if you were using Windows Update.
    #19 rseiler on 27 Jul 2004 - 16:07
It's interesting that the list of what's fixed isn't live yet (see links here) yet everyone's installing it anyway.

Does anyone have links to the client installation's of Visio and Project 2003?

    What about InfoPath?
    #20.1 dkldkldkl on 27 Jul 2004 - 17:15
Client installs of Visio and Project are on Office Update...
InfoPath is part of Office 2003.
