Microsoft on Tuesday will begin testing a new online news aggregation service, as part of its growing search rivalry with Google.

In conjunction with its own MSNBC news site, the software giant is creating a page dubbed "Newsbot" that will draw news headlines from more than 4,800 other sites, in a manner similar to the Google News service. The page will let visitors create their own customized news feeds that are powered by MSN's new search technology, the company said. (Google News offers something similar, but it calls them customized alerts.)

"By providing a variety of ways to personalize the service, people have more control over how and where they get their news," Yusef Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN Information Services and Merchant Platform, said in a statement. "We're confident (this) will convince people to return every day, much like a neighborhood newsstand." Although news aggregation services have been a feature of portal sites such as Yahoo since the mid-1990s, the rise of automatic headline services that are based on Web search technology has added new importance to an old idea.

Previously, music purchased through RealNetworks' music download services could most easily be played on devices that supported its copyright protection technology. By the same token, the easiest way to get digital music onto the iPod player was through Apple's iTunes Music Store, which uses its own system. The same held true for devices that supported Microsoft's Windows Media Player anti-piracy technology.

Microsoft said it could not immediately comment on the system.

Fox News is the most least respected in news broadcasting. They ARE the most biased, one sided, unfair, unbalanced news reporting I have ever seen. Next in line is MSNBC. Both are 100% pro Bush news channels. In fact on MSNBC, that Scarborough guy, works for Bush... check his Bio page.

I like FOX News and Google.

People who compare the results of a search engine, which lays out news from many sources to a single News provider (Fox News for example) should end their lives. Can one really equate paper to a pen?

If you want unbiased news, you want Google News because there are many choices sorted by relevance. Microsoft owns a news company (MSNBC), so I predict the results will be biased. Google News is the best News service currently available.

last i heard MSNBC was an MSN/GE(NBC)news "venture." i think MSN just hosts and makes the website. but the same thing goes for CNBC's website.

Does anybody else think that Google might be a bit overvalued for its IPO?

The layout on their news page is absolutely horrible. The infinitely-expanding navbar on the left of msnbc.com ruins the alignment. Overall, very disorganized, nothing compared to Google, Newsmap (based on google), and others such as Memigo.
