Motherboard manufacturer Gigabyte has accused Asus of cheating on the 925X/915X scores. Asus 925X/915P series motherboards score a lot higher in some 3D graphics performance tests than Gigabyte's motherboards. According to The Inquirer Gigabyte tested the Asus PSAD2 Premium board and discovered a setting called Peg Link Mode. "This setting clandestinely overclocks the frequency of memory and core engines of ATI based PCI Express Graphics"

Major motherboard maker Gigabyte has hit out at its competitor Asus accusing of it cheating on 925X/915X scores. The allegation is that Asus 925X/915P series moteherboards score much higher in some 3D graphics performance tests. In a media release, Gigabyte said "we have found that Asus has been doing some cheating".

Gigabyte claims that "out of curiosity" it tested the Asus PSAD2 Premium board and discovered a setting called Peg Link Mode. "This setting clandestinely oveclocks the frequency of memory and core engines of ATI based PCI Express Graphics," Gigabyte alleged. "It was also found that Peg Link Mode is not an enhancement feature for [the] motherboard, as it provides enhancement only to the graphics card's memory and core engine frequency, ostensibly with the sole purpose to obtain higher benchmark results on 3D graphics".

Besides exposing plans for a Sudeki sequel, the ad also appeared to reveal two other new games: The Final Option and Dragon Wars. No further information was revealed for those titles, although the listing also mentions Codename Avalon, Climax's previously announced mystery project for next-generation consoles.

Given Sudeki's lackluster critical reception, many industry watchers wondered if Climax will stick with its plans to a sequel. Reps for Climax did not respond to inquiries as of press time.

it would be useful if they overclocked it in games and stuff like that. Not just to 'obtain higher benchmark results on 3D graphics'

agreed

Many people read only benchmark scores.

Thats not right...

btw, im a Gigabyte Fanboy.

So. That is my comment. I could care less. Actually I would give Asus a couple bonus points for having the balls to not only think of this, but to impliment it. Way to go!

it seems illogical to me, given the way benchmarks SHOULD work, that something would be able to JUST boost the benchmark scores, with no added benifit to the user

If it benefits the user in all games...and does it nicely...its not cheating! Gigabyte is just jealous
#4.1 Varsity on 03 Aug 2004 - 15:15
Actually, it is wrong. Benchmarks aren't supposed to take into account overclocking even if it is 'built-in', so to speak. If they did there would be thousands of results.

Gigabyte was not able to handle the heat:p

Put a "c" in front of "heat",... Wich is N E V E R a good thing to do. It leads to loosing trust of it's customers!

ABC and a half!

Asus has been dropping in quality for a while now, and now this. Either that or other mobo manufacturers have been getting better.

Too bad for asus.

What are you smoking? Asus have been spitting out nothing but good boards for a while now.
#6.2 T-Metal on 04 Aug 2004 - 01:13
Yeah. Some people, huh?

A mobo should NOT OC your video card without telling you to so, if this is the case (without warning), this is pure CHEATING !
#8 BoneDog7 on 03 Aug 2004 - 15:49
It did tell you so, there's a setting called "Peg Link Mode." Sounds like a good idea to me.

How would you go about OCing a Video Card in the first stages of boot? That has to be some pretty well thought-out coding, because it sounds quite complicated.
#9.1 T-Metal on 04 Aug 2004 - 01:14
I was thinking the same thing.
#10 TruckWEB on 03 Aug 2004 - 18:40
It"s those little nice features that makes ASUS board better than others. If they can do it, why not?

I say GO! ASUS! The best boards around. Super stable and allways fast.

Gigabyte should go back and do their homework and provide an updated bios with the same feature.

In my humble opinion, if there is an option to boost a chipset to maximum without damaging hardware itself. its not cheating. its utilization of hardware to maximum. or simply put enhancing the efficiency ! That nice. its just like airbus and boeing using the same engine and airbus going half coss the globe and boeing all the way around and back in the same amount of fuel.

Exactly.I have an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe mobo which is based on the 865PE chipset. It has PAT(with different name) which is available only for 875 based chipsets. Is it called cheating? NO.We should say it is "value for money".

Gigabyte is simply jealous of Asus.
#13 T-Metal on 04 Aug 2004 - 01:16
Yeah, I agree with #10/11/12. Besides, MSI also has an overclocking feature built-in, but nobody made much fuss about that, so...it's fair enough.

Where exactly do these accusations end up? In the court of Law? In the computer enthusiasts subconscious?

Stop wasting your time, Gigabit.

What happens when the ATI cards die early due to Peg Link Mode's increased stress? There won't be a warrenty on them because they were overclocked.

I'll give you $20 each time a video card maker asks what kind of motherboard you have when you need to RMA your broken vid card.

It's broken due to nothing physical you did, therefore you get a new one.

I'd like to hear if the ASUS boards even fry the cards... The odds are probably not.

Well, I purchased the P5AD2 Premium the other week, and got a fairly nice system built out of it, with a ATi x600 PCI-Express Graphics card in it. So far I have to say it works fantastically. If the Graphics Card does burn out due to overclocking, then ASUS can deal with it because its an ASUS graphics card as well
