A maker of software that enabled users to copy DVDs and computer games folded Tuesday under the mounting weight of lawsuits by deep-pocketed movie studios and video game producers. In a posting on its Web site, 321 Studios Inc. quietly announced "it has ceased business operations including, but not limited to, the sale, support and promotion of our products."

The company said that despite its "best efforts to remain in business," unfavorable court rulings by three federal courts this year assured its demise. "The employees and those associated with 321 Studios sincerely appreciate your support of our company and products over the last couple of years," said the statement by the "321 Studios Team." The company, based in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles, warned in June that it could seek federal bankruptcy protection to free itself of copyright-related lawsuits by Hollywood and makers of computer games.

Besides exposing plans for a Sudeki sequel, the ad also appeared to reveal two other new games: The Final Option and Dragon Wars. No further information was revealed for those titles, although the listing also mentions Codename Avalon, Climax's previously announced mystery project for next-generation consoles.

Given Sudeki's lackluster critical reception, many industry watchers wondered if Climax will stick with its plans to a sequel. Reps for Climax did not respond to inquiries as of press time.

I don't get why this company was sued and put out of business when there are other apps out there that will also copy DVDs. What makes this company different from the others?

I know this really gets me so pissed off. And now there is talk of the damn movie studios coming out with something simmilar (yet with a bit more control of how much u can copy, etc.) products. This is just sick!

I cannot express how much anger I have, this was a good, clean, company that fought for OUR fair-rights, these hardasses in the courts are just dishing out these rulings for the RIAA/MPAA (sp?), etc. becuase ether:

a) they don't know any better, and think omg this is for stealing!! Computers will take us over!!

or..

b) getting paid off..

It sucks, yes it does...

consider all other softwares that can make a exact same thing. I mean if copy movie isn't allowed by produce the hardware for it the first place....

Sony owns music/movie industry as well, hence also just release their DL DVD burner recently?

Personally I think 321 Studios violated the law, infact they did and that is why the courts held them accountable.

I think it is time we changed the law!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sick of all these copyright laws, I believe if I own it, I should be able to back it up as long as I dont sell it and make a profit by selling it.

I don't get all this. I thought that user can made backup copy for himself, so it's rather produces violate law, because they make doing backup copy impossible (by installing copy protections).

Money makes the rules.
U can have all the rights U want to make a backup copy, if they don't allow U, U won't/can't.
And they goto court until U are dead or out of money, LOL

I hope they take it to a country where it is not forbidden yet
