- What was wrong with Google as a private company?
I say if it's not broke don't fix it. The last thing I need is some stock investor pointing out how much more money Google would make if they carry an ad banner on their front page.
Investors want nothing more than to "grow" the company in literally every direction.
People that use Google don't want "growth", they want simplicity. I am wondering how long it will take for these Methodologies to clash.

- The URL refers to *snipped* which is a scam site. *snipped* is the correct site. I do understand the reasoning behind the confusion, and how they are advertising an illegal download. I just wanted to point out that the ad is for a completely different site (yet almost identical in layout: if you go to suprnova.org they inform you that the .com and .net sites are scamsites which ask for credit card info).

- When you click the ad, you get sent to Suprnova.com- which is a rip off of Suprnova.org. Just look at the titile: SuprNova.org - .com and .net are scammers!
I'm not promoting Suprnova, just pointing this out.

- I know. They even tell use when eDonkey is released.
That and topics about torrent files are popping up everywhere

#17 Posted by underthebridge on 05 Aug 2004 - 16:41
- I can't believe this
What bothers me is not so much the piracy but that suprnova is a SCAM!! They're actually taking profit for others work.
I hope it's fixed immediately, as I can still see their ad on google and amazon when I search for doom 3

#18 Posted by 1ceman1 on 05 Aug 2004 - 16:46
- Naughty google. They really need to sort themselves out, things are not going well!

- What ? I thought Suprnova was for downloading Linux binaries ...
Seriously why is Neowin trying to shake up a can of worms, the hacker/pirate community may get back in a harsh way for this.
-
#19.1 Posted by YaddaMe on 05 Aug 2004 - 17:19
- I would say that Google is the one being called out there, not the hacking/pirate community so much.
When you agreed to AdSense's TOS, and the violate that TOS for several months, pointing the finger at Google may not be the thing to do. -
#19.2 Posted by antareus on 05 Aug 2004 - 17:45
- Uh you act like the hacker/pirate community can actually do something. Give me a break, they're a bunch of script kiddies, all of them.
-
#19.3 Posted by arantius on 05 Aug 2004 - 18:53
- That's pathetic. Sure. A lot of script kiddies know nothing besides well, how to run scripts.
But someone wrote the scripts. -
#19.4 Posted by antareus on 05 Aug 2004 - 23:27
- How is it pathetic that I refuse to pay respect to a bunch of miscreants? They could be doing something useful with their time but noooooo instead they're all about copyright infringement and exploits. It is not that my respect means anything, it is just ludicrous that people even respect them at all.

- i swear, neowins like a littel kid who just heard someone curse, "ooooooohhhhhhh, you just said a bad woooooooooord. im telling my mommy"
the fact that there is a discussion over this is bad enough. but to have it as news on the front page.
it's pittely crap, thats what it is and will always be. caused by a warzaphobia of Neowin. -
#20.1 Posted by kawai on 05 Aug 2004 - 18:08
- completely agree
so damn stupid when eveyrone was hosting the royale theme and they are like the only one who refused to
didn't see other sites got into trouble...
man, neowin used to be good, now it's becoming a post count obsessed forum and so so news. -

-
#23 Posted by Randall_Lind on 05 Aug 2004 - 17:52
- If you need a ad to tell you where to download doom 3 then you must be new to the warez scene.
-
#24 Posted by Skwerl on 05 Aug 2004 - 18:11
- I reported crap like this to Google months ago. Try doing a search for something like "Adobe InDesign" and on the right hand side of the browser window there will be nothing but ads for people pirating the software. Google assured me they would investigate, but it's obvious that there's no one running the show behind the ad program.
-
#25 Posted by Opio on 05 Aug 2004 - 18:18
- Not to be anal or anything but it's "id Software," not "ID Software".

- FYI : - I would be careful you guys are not violating Google Adsense TOS with this story - I understood you should not highlight the ads program in any form ..
-
#32 Posted by papertiger on 05 Aug 2004 - 20:10
- Not the first time Google has had a link like this in their adverts. A few months ago I saw one particular advert that contained a link to a site containing cheats for certain MMORPGs.

- Wow a couple of weeks ago, it was the iPod+Apple that was being implictly attacked by Neowin and now the interested has shifted towards Google !
Somehow the second article about Google has been pulled by Neowin. Was there any blatant error ?

QUOTE was being implictly attacked by Neowin and now the interested has shifted towards Google
Which is a risky move when they send you checks each month... not to mention that Neowin violated their TOS for several months., even more reason to not point the finger at Google.

- Does anyone else here feel this is a terribly immature thing to post on a news site of Neowin's caliber? You know, if you guys get proven wrong or those pictures turn out to be fakes you could be in some SERIOUS trouble for slander and lible especially since Google just went public.
-
#40 Posted by PsykX on 05 Aug 2004 - 23:31
- At least I'm sure it gave a few bucks to Neowin.net

-

- FYI, just in case you missed it, it's a trivial matter and always has been to get warez from Google. You just have to know the right search term.
Besides which - shoot me if you want - but Suprnova is a pretty cool site. I've gone there for ages for my Linux stuff - and when I was desperate for a preview of a game or something.
So long as they pay their bills that's up to them. I just think it's a shame if Neowin in there desperation for a story is setting them up for a fall.
They have no control over who sees their ads.
It just seems a bit rough.

- Oh well, google doesnt mean this, hell they even complyed to deleting Kazaa K++ off there search, this was prob. a slipup or somethning. No biggie.

-
#47 Posted by dataschmuck on 06 Aug 2004 - 09:46
- I think google is completley aware of this and are letting it go on purpose. Just think of all the n00bz seeing that, clicking on it trying to get their free warez copy of Doom 3, then giving their credit card numbers to suprnova.com and losing all their money. You may say people aren't that stupid, but do not forget, some people are naive and there are new people using computers who have never used one before every day. They just don't know any better, and google knows this. Its their way of teaching people a lesson.

What was so interesting about the advert was that it appeared to be advertising a link to a pirated copy of Doom III, the soon to be released game from ID Software. The link took readers a notorious software and film piracy site, Suprnova. Suprnova provides a centralised base for tracking torrents, or files often illegally hosted on the bit-torrent protocol.
Google claims to "uphold the quality and reputation of Google AdSense, all publishers who apply are reviewed according to these program policies", and says that sites that "promotes illegal activity" are not allowed into the program. Or not!
Neowin was unable to get a response from Google for comment. One would hope that in future the program would take more time reviewing the adwords accepted, and certainly not leave the job to a computer to do. Illegally issued shares might not be the only misdemeanour Google's committed of late.
Other exciting features include the original Intellivision TV commercials, never-before-released games, “radical” game modes, and two exclusive historical documentaries featuring interviews with the Blue Sky Rangers, the name given to the original Intellivision game programmers. “We’re excited to have Intellivision Lives! available for everyone,” said Keith Robinson, president/co-founder of Intellivision Productions, Inc. and an original Blue Sky Ranger. “Now gamers can enjoy their favorite Intellivision games on the three most popular gaming consoles! Intellivision Lives! is more than just a game collection. With all these extra features, the games have taken on a new life for a new generation of video game players.”

Intellivision co-founders Robinson and Stephen Roney were involved in each stage of development to ensure that the design and game emulation are faithful to the original Intellivision system.
