- Since this this the first comment... I'm going to stick this in here so everybody can read it... No torrent links, no mirrors... nothing.
Only links from MS Once they release it to everyone will be permited.
I've been seeing various people complaining that what they thought was 2180 was something else.
- shockz..
Ok.. back to your post:

- For those who still wanna grab the SP2 before ms releases it here is something that you would like to consider:
From ms website
QUOTE We recommend that you not install the RC2 version of SP2 on computers that are running the latest security updates. Instead, install the final version of Windows XP SP2 when it becomes available. Installing the RC2 version of SP2 on computers that already have the latest security updates installed can cause incompatibilities. The final release of SP2 will be compatible with all previously installed security updates.

#11 Posted by Taliseian on 06 Aug 2004 - 18:24
- Just an FYI all -- there seem to be numerous fake links to many different files that are all "claiming" to be SP2.
Don't be fooled!
Only get SP2 from an official Microsoft source for now -- according to them, it should be at the Microsoft Download Center sometime next week.
If you download anything else, who knows what you could end up with........

- As Stated In Official MS Beta Newsgroups:
Final testing is complete and at 10:08am this morning we signed off on build 2180 as Windows XP Service Pack 2, releasing it to manufacturing. The final build will be available to beta sites immediately at http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/download/dl3.asp. You will find both English and German versions there, Japanese will follow early next week.
Next week the service pack will be available on the Microsoft Download Center for general download. In the interim we're making the update available to you via the beta web site.
If you are running RC2, or any other build released to beta sites, we invite you to turn on Automatic Updates, and starting on August 10th your system will automatically download the express version of Windows XP SP2. For typical home users this is about a 75 MB download; for those on RC2 it should be less than 30 MB. As soon as the background download is complete, you will be prompted to install SP2 and to accept the EULA (SP2 does not install automatically even if Automatic Updates is set to automatically install security updates). If you have a modem connection, don't "Cancel" the update once it's in progress; just disconnect and when you reconnect later, it will automatcially pick up where it left off until it completes.
Q: What's next?
A: For the next 2 weeks the beta newsgroups will still be available to you. We'll be in the newsgroups and hope you'll discuss your experience with early SP2 deployments there. On August 18th the newsgroups will close and we'll move on to finding and fixing the bugs in Windows 2003 Server SP1.
Thanks for all your time and effort in driving the quality high in SP2 and finding those tricky issue that only seem to occur in the wild and never under laboratory conditions. Be sure to verify and update your contact information at http://beta.microsoft.com so we can get in touch with you in the future.
I hope your experience testing SP2 was a good one. We've saved the chat logs and when we build the next beta program I'll see what we can do to implement some of your suggestions.

Obviously .:: lebmike ::. was a tad stupid... but my comment just said the file was fake, without a link or reference. I think the moderating might be a little too harsh - but then, I guess it must be hard with so many comments coming so quickly.

-

QUOTE How does what I stated there confirm what kind of a copy I am using? Know more before you make baseless and fake assumptions.
so you are saying you have a "legal" copy and got this info from somebody else? so if i called you up and told you George W.Bush fell off bicycle for the third time, hit his head and never got up, you would go out and tell everyone:"Apparently, our president is dead."?-

We have our sources. Give it up.-

- Got to say this ... LastSamurai pwned The Neowin news posting Team on that one !
-
#44.7 Posted by
Toxicfume on 06 Aug 2004 - 20:48
- I did not say that and don't even try to make an implication out of what I said, we have sources to confirm facts, so keep the funny analogies out and yes, just give up.

jerry: that really depends on what your definition of what you said is, seems rather subjective. -
#44.8 Posted by VikingStorm on 06 Aug 2004 - 21:23
- I seriously think that statement should be removed. It taints the quality of the source.
-
#44.9 Posted by no-sweat on 06 Aug 2004 - 23:24
- i think this part is fine .. microsoft made a big deal on how they may release SP2 so pirated copies work with it too , because as they said - all they want is to help pc users, even if they are illegal copies.
so quit bitching about it, its a legit fact and it is an important part of this article.
and might i add, the news poster could have easily found a pirated key, change his systems key to that one, and tested it. dont be so quick to accuse. -
#44.10 Posted by jerry on 07 Aug 2004 - 00:03
- ToxicFume, LastSamurai has a point here. That statement about pirated cd keys is just not appropriate. Its like putting foot in your mouth after the recent Google-warez exposing Neowin articles that were pulled mysteriously.
Please, Neowin's tag line is Where unprofessional journalism looks better, just dont take it to your heart.
-
#44.11 Posted by
Toxicfume on 07 Aug 2004 - 00:22
- The way we see it here, we report and confirm on facts that have had previous speculation, and this is as appropriate as reporting any other information about the service pack. All that's being done here is confirming this: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/05/09/142203, this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3774567.stm this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/25/xp_pirates_sp2/ and so on...so please, think before accusing or saying things like that.
I am not hinting on anything or giving subliminal messages, it's a response to a subject that has recieved a big media speculation since a while. -
#44.12 Posted by jerry on 07 Aug 2004 - 01:31
- Alright, I give up Toxicfume.
Its just that reading the news article sounds like you are targetting both the legal & warez community. "Update: Pirated Keys seem to be working." sounds like getting excited over it. I think the tone is not right.
Anyway, I give up and agree with your view.
-
#44.13 Posted by mram on 07 Aug 2004 - 18:14
- I don't.
When you don't condone warez, you don't have information including warez in your release. It taints the news. It stops being impartial.
All three of those articles spoke about piracy in general, and talked about the merits/problems of installing SP2 on pirated copies of Windows. By comparison, you just put ammunition in the gun with the news post. By linking that "update" with this news article, you have made an indirect implication : "Hey pirates, you can install this, it's ok!"
That is condoning piracy.
