Neowin has managed to find a few working mirrors that are simply just SP2 RTM and without any patches or dodgy torrents :)

We ask members not to post links to any torrent files or any files that are over the MB (266) of the final as these could contain warez/trojans etc. If you do have any working mirrors with just the RTM on then feel free to PM me on Neowin (creamhackered) and I will add them to this post.

On a side note, apologies to our members who's posts were moderated in the forum for posting SP2 download links. We have to ensure the links don't contain any warez/trojans and in some cases we removed ones that were genuine.

Update: We now have the Official Microsoft mirror available (266MB network install). Please remember that a smaller update will be available for users on Windows Update/Automatic Updates from the 25th August onwards so turn on Automatic Updates and save bandwidth!

Download: Windows XP SP2
Download: Patched UxTheme.dll for Windows XP SP2

I've got the WinBeta version (checked out on MD5) but I'm looking for the MSDN version...

Someone say they're both the same - which one is digitally signed? WinBeta or MSDN?
#1.2 Cheese Whiz on 09 Aug 2004 - 01:27
These questions underscore the importance of d/ling SP2 straight from MS and *not* from these unknown links.

I'm sure their hearts are in the right place, but cream, et al. haven't done anyone a favor by offering alternative d/ls to SP2 ahead of Microsoft. Much of the service pack is devoted to security, but this d/l frenzy amply illustrates that it's the user, not the os, which places computer systems (and networks) at risk.

What if cream had posted a link to a dodgy file. How many would have blindly d/led and installed? How many would have been able to tell it were bad w/out a publicly available baseline (on Microsoft.com) to compare it with?
#1.3 Andareed on 09 Aug 2004 - 01:32
Winbeta and MSDN are basically the same. Read below (http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?category=main&id=23138#comment263965) to see how to turn Winbeta SP2 into MSDN SP2

That's cool and I respect that. We're just offering people choice
#2.2 PanicButton on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:20
Yeah lots of dodgy copies flying around, at least this way they're safe.
#2.3 XP_2003 on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:51
Yeah I'll wait too, not that I have much of a choice since I have a Dutch version of XP
#2.4 FISKER_Q on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:54
"That's cool and I respect that. We're just offering people choice "

But still isn't illegal to make it available for download even though it's final?

Edit: Oh read your other reply. I can object morally though, i think it's good your helping out the users. But then again legally it could be bad.

Huh? Just go to Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Windows Firewall (if you are using the dumb categorized control panel) or Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall (if you are using the smart classic control panel) and select Off.

Erm.... wasn't there a massive debate about not posting links? Bit hypocritical...
#3.1 creamhackered on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:15
That's because we couldn't confirm how authentic the links were and whether they contained keygens.
#3.2 stezo2k on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:16
ah, was going to say
#3.3 Bazildondude on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:17
Ah ha, I thought it was because of SP2 itself, all cleared up ^^.

Link?
#3.6 LearningCurveMountaineer on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:49
They're talking about redistributing CD copies as widely as possible somewhere on the site, anyway, that is give it to all your friends and family, please, and I'm sure the same thinking applies to all clean copies of the Service Pack. They want this baby distributed as widely and as quickly as possible, as long as the copies are clean.

Sorry can't remember where the link is.

oops, that's right. it's not out yet.
#3.8 Hiyan on 09 Aug 2004 - 07:15
I really dont think MS will mind people distributing SP2... it surely will take the load off their own download servers.

got problem with the sp2 rtm slipstreamed.
for like one hours its ok but then its completly unstable and cant load my account anymore. i thinik ill wait an official link from ms and do a safe slipstream again
#4.1 DjmUK on 08 Aug 2004 - 13:47
I've had no problems slipstreaming. I did this a few days ago easily.

- Original XP CD (with no previous SP's on)
- Installed nLite (http://nuhi.msfn.org/)

This program does the slipsteaming for you - with options all over the shot, it's safer than manual slipstreaming.
#4.2 radixvir on 08 Aug 2004 - 16:11
whoa i never knew that nlite program existed. thanks!

I will tell you this I can Update Clean SP1 installs or SlipStream SP2 and install. I can even upgrade a SP1 install updated to SP2 RC2 to RTM. What I can't do i update a Slipstreamed SP2 RC2 whaaaaaaaaaa anyone have a fix for this? (Other than fresh install I know that will work) I may post this down at the bottom too..
#4.5 T-Metal on 02 Oct 2004 - 04:36
nLite is the best!

so this is the absolute final which will be posted by microsoft next week on windows update?

dont ms mind this being posted - we normally have strict rules on this sort of stuff...
#5.1 kainashi on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:21
the one that microsoft will be posting won't have the rtm tag stuff in the build number. that's about the only difference.
#5.2 creamhackered on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:24
It's the exact same version yes.
#5.3 Phemo on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:42
I suspect it will contain the RTM tag. The final retail and OEM versions of Windows Server 2003 have RTM in their build tag so it'll probably be a standard thing from now.

Yes, you CAN disable the Windows firewall, in 3 easy lines of VBscript.

the Windows Firewall is enabled by default when you install Service Pack 2. For most people that's a good thing; if you already have a firewall running on your machine, however, you might not want to have Windows Firewall running as well. So how can you disable Windows Firewall? Why, by running this script, of course:

Set objFirewall = CreateObject("HNetCfg.FwMgr"
Set objPolicy = objFirewall.LocalPolicy.CurrentProfile

objPolicy.FirewallEnabled = FALSE

oh..then i'll wait till the final final build comes out tomorrow. Hate to hate the RTM and later the RTW has slight changes.

It will be identical, honestly.
#7.2 2xSilverKnight on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:28
dont know why but im 99% sure that the rtw will be a bit different because theres some issues in sp2 that remains

edit And i think the "delay" of sp2 we got like 2-3 days ago was for the rtw since rtm as already been compiled on 4 august

I found it worked smoother upgrading from RC2 than on other computers installed from fresh, as I encountered some problems.

What's going on? Neowin had a change of heart?
#14.1 vetDazzla on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:42
Like creamhackered said above, we want to ensure that Neowin users are downloading the legit thing, not random torrents with keygens, trojans and god knows what else. These links are all legit and can be MD5 checked.
#14.2 lwebster_2000 on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:47
but wont ms see this as leaked software, which entails all the usual words like illegal and warez along with it? I think we're all just a little confused why the exception is being made to the rule for this, not that we're not grateful
#14.3 Dessimat0r on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:47
But it is not a random torrent, I created the one above myself, and am also seeding it myself. But if you don't want it, that's fine.
#14.4 creamhackered on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:48
Since we're clearly asking members to check the EXE with an MD5 checksum verifier Microsoft shouldn't be unhappy that even more people will be updating to SP2. We're also tracking the downloads so we can report to MS how many users have downloaded the EXEs
#15 illz55 on 08 Aug 2004 - 12:42

Nice one cream

Been running SP2 (installed it from the network install, didnt do a clean install from slipstream disk yet) and my feedback so far is WOW!

1. Much faster
2. Much smoother
3. IE IS FAST!
4. IE popup blocker is really really good
5. New WiFi wizards are
6. New Bluetooth stuff is really nice
7. ITS GOD DAMN FAST!

Incase you missed it I am very impressed with how much more responsive things are. The UI feels tougher and more robust. It is also much smoother with the shadows and the coloured box u get when you drag over files in an explorer window. Over all I am very happy and glad Microsoft put so much effort in as it really shows.
#21.1 LearningCurveMountaineer on 08 Aug 2004 - 13:19
Yeah, SP2 certainly is FAST isn't it !!!

And when MS finally succeed in fixing all the WinFS bugs in Longhorn the new one will be EVEN FASTER !!!
#21.2 ralfy on 08 Aug 2004 - 13:20
I tested sp2 awhile ago, and bluetooth is great... In sp1a just after couple of hours of work i made Nokia PC Suite to work with my bluetooth adaptor (for my mobile), and in sp2 it worked from the start, needed just 5 mins to install all the stuff

sp2 is great

is there a workaround for the tcp connection limitation thing described here http://bink.nu/?ArticleID=2208 yet?

cant make any of that work
#22.1 jwjw1 on 08 Aug 2004 - 13:27
go here...there is a patch...that patches the tcpip.sys to up the connections from 10 to 50

After almost everybody knows the "EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts", I used a day to create for educational purpose a fix for this argumentative feature.

Unfortunately there exists no REG-key which could easily be set (would be so nice and easy, right? *smile*). The file TCPIP.SYS in the directory C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERS and C:WINDOWSSERVICEPACKFILESI386 has to be changed (system dependend eventually in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DLLCACHE, too).

Needed things:
- XP SP2 RC1/RC2/RC2-2 (Build 2096/2149/2162/2180)
- patcher (1.2)
- a small amount of time

Yeah, that's easy as going to your services, and disabling it. I've disabled the "security" center stuff, as well. I don't need them ... that stuff's for n00bs.

nope the one i got is the 266.01mb and the one they put here is 272.4mb. the two was seen in firefox so its not the same size ... bah nm ill try this one ...

for the security center when i disable it it shows me "balloons" and keeps saying to me to active firewall and automatic update. i guess there is a reg key to remove it ... il find by myself
