Last quarter chip giant Intel lost some of its market share to its rival AMD (among others such as Via and IBM). Though Intel didn't lose enough to cry about it shows that that Intel may need to rethink its business strategy. According to figures released by Mercury Research Intel lost 0.8% while AMD captured an additional 0.5% market share.

As anyone can tell you the processor market share fluctuates mainly between Intel and AMD. So at any given time one company will gain market share while the other loses market share. The reason this time for the Intel’s decreased market share is the demand for cheap computers. In this case AMD benefits greatly. Especially when you take in consideration that AMD has a lot more low-cost processors than its rival. Earlier this month AMD released its Sempron processors, which start as low as $39.

While it's good news to hear that AMD has gained more market share the real test has yet to come. The most important test for market share will come during the third and forth quarters. Because during these quarters PC sales are at their highest (back to school sales and holiday seasons). Unless Intel unveils something really unexpected during that time my money is on AMD.

"The PSP is a portable game machine, and people may think it's oriented towards playing simple games, but it really has the same hardware performance as the PS2," comments Yamauchi in the interview. "Since we're already developing the GT4's system on the PS2 hardware, we're planning to port that directly to the PSP."

Yamauchi broadened the discussion to PSP games in general. "There's basically two ways of making games for the PSP. One way is to develop an original new game, which in general will be limited in its content since the price of PSP games aren't going to be too high, meaning the game's development budget will also be limited. We're going to be taking the second method, which is to take a system from a major title, and effectively sliding it onto the PSP hardware," he said.

Yamauchi also said that Gran Turismo 4 for the PS2 is currently still around 75 percent complete and that he plans to release it by the end of the year. Given that fact, though, it is unlikely whether the PSP version will be finished in time for the PSP launch in Japan this fall and in the US in early 2005.

HA. For that to happen Intel would actually have to start innovating again. Too bad all their engineers went over to AMD! LOL. You win some, you lose some. In this case, GO AMD!

I like AMD but I bought my 1ghz P3 way before AMD came out with anything good =p

And plus they have weak mobile technologies... can't beat the Pentium M/Centrino combination.

stop wasting time here and go email some programmers you want 64bit support.

and yes Intel deserved this they try to minimize 64bit

but Intel is good too, they are coming with a Matrix Raid where you can have two different raid partitions on one HD, one partition striped for performance another partition mirrored for safety.

That is incredible, a recent processor for only $39. No wonder they're gaining market share. I switched to AMD from Intel a few years ago and I don't think i'd ever go back.

Good stuff AMD (Y)

Who cares wich dominates the market. Let the competion continue so the prices get lower and lower.

I think I may have contributed to this. 2 years ago, all I would buy for the buisness I work for is Intel. Last year I got a few AMDs and really liked them. All of last year I continued just purchasing from AMD. Comparing processor to processor AMD is only slightly cheaper then Intel, but when comparing the over all systems, you get a better price going with AMD and I haven't had any problems w/ their recent line of processors.

They've really turned things around from their K7 days. Back then I wouldn't touch their processors with a very long stick. Good for them for turning things around.
