Microsoft has released its own image editing/organizing software. Called "Digital Image Suite 10", the program sells for $129. To sweeten the deal, you'll get a $30 rebate if you purchase a digital camera alongside the software - Not a bad price overall considering what this software offers.

This software isn't wont be targetted at users of Adobe's world famous Photoshop software. Instead, Microsoft is targeting its software towards users who rely on Adobe's Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements was created for general / basic use. It's for users without a need for all the advance features that Photoshop offers. Digital Image Suite 10 offers all the features of Elements and more; Features like Microsoft’s Photo Story 2.0 which allows you to create videos from your photos, support for an auto fix feature (such as color, exposure, contrast, levels, camera phone auto fix), and an impressive image management interface.

Adobe has been, for as long as I can remember, the king in the image editing market. So i applaud a bit of competition there. This software provides a interesting insight into the demand for non-bundled / established Microsoft products, and is perhaps one of the few examples where Microsoft are actually taking on a competitor on the basis of quality.

"The PSP is a portable game machine, and people may think it's oriented towards playing simple games, but it really has the same hardware performance as the PS2," comments Yamauchi in the interview. "Since we're already developing the GT4's system on the PS2 hardware, we're planning to port that directly to the PSP."

Yamauchi broadened the discussion to PSP games in general. "There's basically two ways of making games for the PSP. One way is to develop an original new game, which in general will be limited in its content since the price of PSP games aren't going to be too high, meaning the game's development budget will also be limited. We're going to be taking the second method, which is to take a system from a major title, and effectively sliding it onto the PSP hardware," he said.

Yamauchi also said that Gran Turismo 4 for the PS2 is currently still around 75 percent complete and that he plans to release it by the end of the year. Given that fact, though, it is unlikely whether the PSP version will be finished in time for the PSP launch in Japan this fall and in the US in early 2005.

"Never afraid to venture into new market places"

This isn't a new venture they've been making digital imaging software for years...

I don't recall Microsoft pushing any of its image editing software as hard as it's pushing Digital Image Suite 10.

Yeah, right, like Adobe didn't produce quality products.

Thing is, hehh, it's wierd for me treating microsoft as a party driving healthy competition.

IMO the fact that such a software exists doesn't necessarily show the existing demand for explicitely microsoft producing such software. It just shows microsoft wishes to gather cash from other sources than, well, patchworthy os's.

What I mean is usually it doesn't happen like people seem to need a specific type of high quality software solution so they [ms] produce it, but rather Mr. Gates steps out, keeps an uplifting speech about what people want, and hey, suddenly people will want all that

I've said it before and I'll say it again now - this package should be *integrated* into Longhorn, in addition to the nifty Phto Triage technology we saw earlier (which I assume will be). For MS to compete in the "Digital Hub" space with Apple, they can't keep charging extra for these things - they should be part of the HOME OS (if not both Home and Professional) when Longhorn ships.

I use version 9 of this software now and it is VERY good already...The library component is better than Adobe Album and the photo editing software is also very good. It has a lot of "one click" (or "a few clicks" items like color level balancing, smart erase, and more. I like it, but very few people use it because of the price tag, or because they simple don't know about it. Come on MS! Get it into Longhorn and stop viewing it as another cash cow...

Yea, but if they bundle this software, Adobe could then take them to court and argue that Microsoft is using it's domination of the OS market to also dominate the digital imaging market.

Same thing happened when they bundled Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, that's also why Microsoft still hasn’t included a built in anti-virus program. Though they still may…

Im not a fan of that method of getting software out same way i think Apple really takes the biscuit when it ships the whole iLife suite with mac's maybe itunes could stay as with iPhoto and iDVD if its coming with a Apple Superdrive but things like iMovie and especially Garageband should cost extra.

Same goes for Media Centre, I had to buy a new PC to get that when i would rather have just bought it on its own and put together my PC, and if MS bundle it with future editions of windows its really gonna destroy competition with people like showshifter and snapstream.

Most of the DOJ's problem was that IE was integrated into Windows. WMP isn't integrated, but it does come bundled.

I think both cases are bull****. It's their OS. They should be able to put in what they want.
#6.4 noyb on 10 Aug 2004 - 23:41
Not really windows is at the end of the day an OS for running applications and the manufacturer of the OS has to respect competition in terms of the applications that are running on it the software industry is a business after all as much as fan boys like to forget. Put it this way if you were making software to work on windows and then MS brought out a product that did much the same thing and bundled it with the OS would you stand a chance in hell of selling any of yours.

It would help if people was more informative here

Whoah! I was just watching the demo video, and they used the "Smart Erase" and erased a person completly out of a picture (and contined the background behind where he was). Now obviously it's not THAT good, but how good is this feature?

Here's a review from PC Magazine.

Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 review

Pros:
Good cataloging and photo archiving. Fun Photo Story feature. Strong mix of easy and sophisticated editing tools.

Cons:
Keyword sorting not flexible enough. Interface slows down editing.
