Moving all of Newham Borough Councils NT4 workstations, Office programs, and 130 Bespoke applications onto a modern Microsoft platform is cheaper than Linux alternatives claims a new study. This study claims that Newham can save 68% by sticking with Microsoft products, by avoiding the cost of switching to open source solutions. This is according to a recent study performed by Capgemini a professional services firm.

The Capgemini study revealed that staying with Microsoft software is 68% cheaper than open source solutions. In addition Newham Borough Council will save 3.2 million pounds over the next five years simply by upgrading to newer Microsoft products. This deal will also equip social workers with Microsoft Tablet PCs among other things. The odd part about all of this is that Newham is also a member of the OGC (Office of Government Commerce), which promotes the use of Linux.

When you hear about companies/industries saving money it's usual followed by the word Linux, but this time it's Microsoft. This can't come at a better time for the tech giant as its war with Linux continues. No doubt this decision by Newham will influence others to think twice about purchasing/staying with Microsoft products.

Such moves are widely seen as an effort by SCEE to complement its already impressive internal development capacity by cultivating a Nintendo-esque network of "second party" studios - a move which not only guarantees continued support for existing platforms, but also gives the company an assurance of high quality early titles for its future systems.

"We've enjoyed an unparalleled working relationship with Evolution Studios over the past 4 years," according to SCEE's executive vice president for development, Phil Harrison, "and the quality of their work on the WRC franchise can be measured by the millions of loyal fans who love the series. This strategic alliance allows our organisations to work even more closely together as we prepare for the combined challenges of new formats and expanded game design horizons."

Evolution Studios was founded in 1999 by Digital Image Design founder Martin Kenwright (who is now managing director of the company) and Psygnosis founder Ian Hetherington, and has developed three successful titles in the World Rally Championship series for SCEE. Last year, the firm revealed plans to expand the studio through the establishment of satellite studios under the "Devolution" programme; BigBig Studios was the first studio to come under the auspices of this plan.

I don't see why people should flame at a business deal between Newham council and Microsoft as its nothing to do with them and don't know the full facts to even justy comments.

Is this really anybodys business other than the 2 party's listed ?

Windows is cheaper, I have been using windows for 5 years and have only needed support one time just after I got my first PC. I have been using Linux 4 years now, I am hardly a Lunux newbie, I help others with simple problems in Linux all the time, but I still ask questions all the time with Linux.

Usually if I go to a message board or IRC chan to ask a question I rarely get an answer better than "Uhm, try __ distro" or I don't get an answer to my question at all.

The cost of 2 support calls is more than one copy of MS windows at a bulk rate. The software itself probably only about 10% of the cost compared to supporting and managing it.

Would it be cheaper if they didnt already have an existing windows information system? I mean of course its gonna cost more if you to change to linux from windows because you have to pay for training, new IT manager? .... etc (I dont really know ). But would be cheaper to create a new IS from nothing using linux or is it cheaper to do it using windows?

I think the next few years are going to make or break Microsoft's hold on the OS / Server market. If they can make substantial efforts to improve security (SP2 and Server 2003 are both great steps), then I'm sure you'll see a lot of companies sticking with Microsoft products.
